@bunbundestroyerofworldslor35124 жыл бұрын
You might not be interested how draft works, but if you are I have written what it is and how it works bellow. Drafting is a tcg format where you get together with 4-8 friends open packs, and build decks out of only those packs. It can range from being a really casual to a competitive format depending on the group and location(conventions and gameshops are generally more competitive). Everyone gets 3 Boosterpacks with 15 cards in it and you sit together at a big table. Then everyone opens a booster and picks 1 card that they are going to keep. They then hand the booster (with now 14 Cards in it) clockwise to their neighbor. Then they repeat that untill all the cards of the first boosterpack are gone. The second batch of boosterpacks follow the same process, but the boosters get handed counterclock wise around the table. And the third and final boosters are again handed clockwise around the table. Now you have pool of 45 cards that you drafted that you use to build your 40 card deck. Energy cards (or in magic basic lands) are provided from outside of the boosters and you have an unlimited amount. Now you just shuffle up and play with your friends.

I made a Little Cube (like the video game's Little Cup) where you only play with Basic Pokemon that have a base HP of 90 or below. Because of the lower health pools and damage outputs, super effective attacks are way more powerful which makes type advantage more relevant. Because I also set up an Energy Battery mechanic (energy is per Trainer, not per Pokemon), it's a lot easier to have cool multitype decks. Everyone who's tried it really enjoyed it, and I'm super proud of it!

I actually like drafts more than normal booster formats. You got far more control over the cards you get and thus make it easier to come up with a functional deck and strategy. But you have to think outside of the normal competitive way to do it to the fullest, especially in Pokémon (and especially if you don'T play mutant). I got lots of my best placements in Pokemon TCG from draft tournaments. The only big roblem is when you open your last booster, spot a rare card and have to think of keeping that card for your collection (or as an investment) or choose one more common option to fit your deck and strategy *lol*

There's actually another form of drafting, which my boyfriend and Icame up with on a whim to fix some of the issue with drafting in Pokemon. Basically, we came up with a discard system for our draft. We started with 12 boosters that we open all at once, and then we allowed each other to discard 15 cards as many times as we want in order to open another pack. This gives an initial look at what you have to work with, and lets you early on figure out what element, pokemon lines, etc you want to base your strategy around. We keep thinning the card pool until we don't feel like we can anymore, then build a deck pulling from an infinite energy pool. It requires a lot of packs if you do it in person, but on tabletop it works perfectly. It's up to you what cards are worth keeping, and which ones can go. The key thing here is your discard amount needs to be over 10/11 cards so you can't do it infinitely, and you need an initial amount of packs that is fairly sizable so you can safely discard a few times.

One of the most fun limited formats I have played in a long time was Magic's JumpStart format. That is something I think Pokemon should try as a product as well. For those unfamiliar, JumpStart was a set where rather that packs being mostly randomized, they were all themed and had small variations among the same themes, but which theme you got was a secret. So each player takes 2 packs (each pack being 20 cards including lands, Magic's equivalent to energy) and puts them together, and that is their deck to play with. While not as strategic as normal drafting, it could easily solve the evolution issue that this video discussed at the start.
@LINX009XBL4 жыл бұрын
This is a good idea and you could even have to where it can be 3 packs of the 20 to make a 60 card deck like normal for Pokémon but the prizes would be 2 per pack used to make your deck

MY favorite card game lately is Keyforge, because it basically drafting in its core. You can only buy decks and each deck is randomized to make it unique, so you don't really know what you have your hands on until you try to play with it, which makes it insanely fun to try out new decks or play the "Sealed" format.

I'm gonna do a variant of Cube Drafting with my bulk cards from boosters I've been opening. Gonna add a rule that you roll dice to determine which Energy Types you get for the tournament and from there you'd get your cube of Pokemon for that specified typing. Normal and Dragon type Pokemon and Trainer cards would be in community cube piles. I like the dice roll to pick what type you use to sort of limit and force players to maybe approach things in a way they wouldn't normally.

I came up with a cube draft format with my friends a while ago. We lined up 200 Pokemon 60 trainers and 40 supporters. The Pokemon had hps between 70-100, and the gold standard damage of 20+15 per energy required, ie 30 for 1, 50 for 2 or 60 for 3. They were also treated as basics even if they wouldn't normally be. Drafted Pokemon, trainers, and supporters seperately, and treated Pokemon as both Pokemon and energy. A grass Pokemon, for example can also be attached as grass energy. Similarly, energy search doubles as Pokemon search, and vice versa, giving a good amount of consistency despite our lacking trainer lineups. I have had more fun in this draft format than I've ever had playing the real game.

Mutant seems like a fun way to pack draft and probably the way I'd try to play draft with Pokemon.

For those who want to play cube but only got 1 other person to play with, may I introduce you to: Pancake draft Pack size - 11 cards Number of packs per player - 9 Final deck size - 45 cards How to play: Both players take their pack and choses a card. Afterwards, they pass the cards to their opponent. Take the 10 cards gotten from your opponent and take 2 cards to add them to your pile. Before passing the stack, choose 2 cards to discard in a communal discard pile. Pass the remaining cards. Take the last 6 cards and grab 2, discarding the rest. Repeat for all the packs. Why this works: The big one is information. With most 2 player formats, the cards are played open. Here, they remain hidden. Even so, you can hate draft by discarding cards you feel your opponent might want, making the gameplay a bit more dynamic. Decks tend to be more focused too. The fact you only get 5/11 cards instead of the whole pack means that you are much less likely to grab dud cards that just don't work with your current strategy.

You get a few playable lines from a medium sized pool, some staple trainers, and then a few boosters that could augment it. I know it's not the same as they're technically framed as prerelease tournaments but still, I've done some and they're pretty playable, if not as inherently exciting as proper drafts. But this sounds SUPER COOL and I would totally love to try it. Holy moly.

Wonderful timing for this, I had been wanting to make a pokemon cube for a while because I love magic cube

It's called "cube" because it's supposed to be a custom "block" of sets.

if only i had the time to commit to such a complex game with such long matches. the only games where i even remotely know what i'm doing are TF2 and pokemon showdown, mainly because you can stop at any time and nobody makes a fuss. and it doesn't help that at any time, my parents can pull me away from what i'm doing to do something that's usually just a waste of my time.

I love that Pokemon now has a good way of drafting. I have my own Magic cube, and absolutely love cube drafting.

Another great video! Love the cube format idea. So cool to see how easy is online. Have a great day.

I’ve never played any card games besides pokemon, but this video also explains why it is so hard for new players to build a deck themselves

I know this is a 2 year old video but if you have tabletop sim and want to play pokemon tcg with the same feeling as getting random cards the best one in my opinion is Lotus Assassin's Real Boosters - Pokemon TCG. It is only up to shining fates with the creator seemingly unable to make updates. But they do link to one that is up to Crown Zenith.

I made a cube for Yugioh and its some of the most fun I've had with the game. Great way to take a break from the insanity of modern Yugioh with some good dumb draft fun. I'd recommend any Yugioh player put together a cube with no Extra deck cards and no cards requiring archetypes for their effects. Its great when cards like Shift and Bazoo the Soul Eater become massive clutch play cards and it gives a use to all that modern pack filler with goofy effects.

I did a Pokemon TCG draft after my locals one day and had an absolute blast. Went for a Mega Ray deck and actually did quite well.

Nice to see another TCG video! Gets me kind of nostalgic for your older vids
