Thank you Sensei, for highlighting the difference between beginner level application of a feint versus expert level application of seme to set up the opportunity.

Hello, love these analysis so much! Just wondering if you could explain the differences between the standard of ippon in a hachidan tournament like this compared to other shiai tournaments?

I try to appreciate kendo, but it's just so hard to take it seriously when shinai weigh about as much as a kitten's cough. xD Put dulled steel (iaito, habikito, etc) in their hands and we'd see a much better representation where cuts and feigns require much more technique, strength, and dedication to pull off effectively.

Kitten's cough? A Shinai weighs about half the weight of a katana. While the difference is there, it's not extremely light like your comment implies. Samurai in the Edo period sparred with Bogu and shinai(actually the shinai predates even to the Sengoku Jidai). Bokken typically weighed lighter than shinken but Samurai still regularly fought both duels and Taryu-Jiai with both Bokken and Shinai. Modern Kendo is not sword-fighting anymore(nor is it trying to be) but criticizing it on the basis of the shinai is ridiculous. Gekken/Gekiken(Sparring with Bogu and Shinai) was a regular part of many Kenjutsu schools including schools that had the biggest influence on modern day Kendo like the Hokushin Ito Ryu, Ono Ha Ito Ryu and Jikishinkage Ryu(some of those ryu still practice Gekken today). Despite being more modern styles, practioners of those schools did see real combat with swords in the Bakumatsu Period. The reason why the shinai has always been relatively light is so that sparring could be conducted without serious injury to your sparring partners. Iaito and Habiki were used typically for Kata and definitely NOT used for sparring. Habiki were used in duels sometimes but I think we both can agree is a duel is generally very different sparring. Normal blunt swords generally weren't used for sparring historically, even around the world. Generally wooden weapons or feder-like steel weapons were used for training. Like the gymnasium sabre or a longsword feder for example, they are simulators with the weight moved much closer to the hilt with a thinner blade. Please research the topic(at least a little bit!) before saying just anything.
