Here is our latest restoration of a Ruger .357 magnum FBI commemorative model. It was involved in a house fire along with alot of other firearms. So this is a fire damaged firearm that was subjected to intense heat. Believe me when I say that test firing was a little scary but fun as well. Do you have any techniques to asses the structural integrity of the frame/barrel/cylinder or test of the heat treat has been compromised by the fire?

@@TheKinzlerBros Thanks for verifying what I thought the gun was. It looked the same as mine overall, especially in the closeups and the breakdown. The main difference is that mine has the 4" barrel and is blued. I bought it in the early 1970s when I was collecting past-due accounts for my employer. It's a great gun and fires as well today as it did when I first bought it. I watch a lot of your videos and have enjoyed them all. I know a lot about my "Security Six" and a few other guns, but am amazed at your in-depth knowledge about so many different guns, especially older foreign guns.

With all that pitting did you consider bluing or scotch brighting it for a satin finish? Just my 2 cents. Your gun, do what you like best.

Well the original finish was stainless. So.if I would have tried to blue it. It would not have taken very well it would have been so spotty especially the barrel where alot of the finish was good still. But thanks for brining it up.

I once owned one of the rugers like the one you have here , same cal. , stainless steel , got it new , but after seeing how pitted this is makes me question rugers selection of the grade of stainless steel they're building these from , and for that matter any of the other stainless guns they make . In my opinion thats B.S. , IF THEIR S.S. GRADE ISN'T HIGH ENOUGH QUALITY TO RESIST PITTING , I DONT THINK I'LL BE BUYING ANY MORE RUGERS OF ANY KIND . THIS REALLY DESTROYS THEIR REPUTATION FOR QUALITY . LOOKS LIKE JUNK NOW. Maybe because they made this for the FBI THEY USED AN INFERIOR GRADE OF STAINLESS STEEL .

I'm surprised they were shipped USPS. Shipping a handgun through the mail is a big No-No. Handguns are not allowed to be mailed through USPS. The corrosion-resistant properties of some types of stainless steel is affected by exposure to high heat. This would be expected on a stainless firearm that was burned in a hot fire and then left exposed to the elements. On another note, Ruger firearms are my absolute favorites. I have a Ruger GP100 .357 Magnum with a 6" barrel. It is without doubt my favorite pistol that I own.

Beautiful but man... I would scared that the metal got annealed during the fire. The fact you got that barrel off so easily tells me the metal expanded and then contracted at some point. You could look up the spec hardness ( Rockwell scale) of the barrel and frame from Ruger and then get some hardness files and do some tests on the barrel and frame to make sure they didn't lose their temper. I would not use this pistol unless you do that first. And then, I would probably only shoot .38 Special +P at most out of it. It's just too risky.

In a house fire you never know if the gun was in a safe or not. if it were out in the open the damage to that revolver would have been mush worse. It is just good that it was stainless still. Too bad about the pits but it cleaned up real nice and it shoots well can't do better than that.

Might as well fix the "timing" (how much aligned the chamber is to the barrel) while at it, since the cylinder is moving a bit. That's my main concern now. But all-in-all, you did an amazing job making the gun work again

have you ever tried copper plaiting it followed by polishing back to to metal to fill in the pits then nickel plating it no more pits..

Not for a working firearm, but an acquaintance of mine just used solder to fill in pits of an old gun, smoothed it out, then did a black cerakote over the metal. Looks pretty good and was an easy process, the gun was beyond financially reasonable to restore so he just made it look nice for some office art.
