My dearest friend was a soap maker. One year on Christmas I found a huge uncut block of soap scented with rose geranium on my front porch. It was her gift to me. Often when I watch your videos I think of Donna. Your exuberance and joyful love of life is like hers. She laughed from the belly with a sparkle in her eye, loved her garden and her animals with a passion. She would have loved your videos and would have had a LOT to say about each one. It is comforting to see the soap work and remember....thank you!

I've made my own soap for several years now - I don't have any special equipment other than a cheap hand blender! I decided I wasn't bothered about scents and additives (it smells lovely anyway), so I use oils I have around anyhow - olive oil, coconut oil, sweet almond etc. I make just a very few bars at a time so it doesn't go stale. It's such an easy process if you only use oils:1) dissolve the caustic soda in the water, 2) add to the oils, 3) blend until trace, 4) pour into mould, 5) leave overnight 6) Cut and leave to dry out.
@thelasthomelyhouse6 жыл бұрын
Perma Pen UK exactly, I have one of those digital thermometers, but when I tested the lye with it, the reading was several degrees different from the traditional thermometer. But using juice cartons gave a really nice shape, and lining a shoe box, the same, so just getting a good recipe and a few nice oils/butters ..... I could make it again in the way you describe, just for my use. Hmmmm, good idea! 😊❤️🍂

Due to several surgeries, it had been put on the back burner...BUT seeing you doing this has sparked my desire to give this a go during this upcoming winter. Actually watching your videos has kicked my rear on getting back into several of my loves...sewing is one. I have made a very small quilt, sampler size, but I'm not a quilter. I do love sewing home dec items & clothes. I've watched all the ones that I've found you making clothing items. I love to garden so I've subscribed to your new garden channel, too! When I tuned in I thought you had made cheese! I appreciate your comments about not getting involved in having to source any specialised kit to attempt to make the soap. It was a good opportunity to try it out with somebody else before you decided to commit to anything. I never realised that handmade soap had to cure before it could be used. I just thought you made it, let it dry and off you go. By the way, here in Norwich(UK) we have a handmade soap stall with a sign above saying 'this is not cheese but soap' so forgive me for thinking cheese earlier!

I just found this video....which is weird because I am about to make soap today! It's like YT can read my mind now---eeeek! I make a very simple coconut oil soap (no other oils or butters, just to keep it simple and cost-efficient). I do scent with essential oils or oil scents made for body products. I order my lye from a place on Amazon which sends you a free silicon mold for soap--so I get another mold with each bottle of lye. I also have a rectangular soap mold which fits into a wooden thingy so it can be cut easily, but you can look in thrift stores and such for silicon loaf or other pans (silicon muffin pans, etc). I hope to make soap over the next few days so that I have a years supply for our family. I use any odd ends and pieces or shavings, etc. to make homemade laundry soap--so another product that I don't have to buy at the market. :) Thanks for sharing your experience!

Kate I hope your not using your kitchen utensils, knife and vegetable peeler for your soap cutting and trimming, btw before the trimmings get too dry you could put them in the palm of your hand and make balls. I thought when you showed the shoe box that you had to have made 20 pounds of soap, was very happy to see that was not the case when you were cutting. If you cut off the end of the really wide bar that will decrease the size. I think you did a fab job, where were the cats whilst you were making soap? Because of the lye you should never have them or children around while your making soap. lye can burn or obviously if ingested kill. I can't wait to see the soap dishes you wind up creating. Great job. xx Angela

kimberley Tolley two years ago I was 60 and I resolved to try all the things I had always wanted to do but never had. That’s where the pottery came from, I also bought a drum kit and had lessons, spent a few months as a vegan, walked the Sefton coastal way, taught myself to spin, learned to make baskets, started indigo dyeing and got my garden back into production after years of neglect. Many more things too. Next week I’m off to learn weaving. Most of all though, I want to get better at this KZbin malarkey and get some of my writing printed and in the shop! There’s a lot of frustration with the lack of decent computer.... Hello Kate, I think the soap making is also very exciting. I've had all the ingredients together for months, except for the hand blender. Because the one from the kitchen you should not use for soap making. I have not found a cheap one yet, and I really do not want to buy an expensive one for this purpose. I found a recipe on the internet, with exact quantities. The pros use their formula, and calculate everything exactly according to what ingredients they use. This is too complicated for me. I still have dried calendula petals left, as well as various pure essential oils and a little dried lavender from the garden. Let's see when I can start. I have often bought Aleppo soap, which is also handmade. It is sold in coarse blocks or smaller pieces. It does not smell like a regular soap, but I love it. You can tell how you find your soap when it has dried long enough. best regards Claudia

It has been over a decade since I shipped anything to the UK so I went to check out the pricing on a small package. As Terri would say, "GEEZ-A-LOO!" It may be awhile before you get some soap from the Duchess of Suds, but I have no doubt your own soap is just as wonderful. My mom made soap and gave me some years ago. Soap making is so much fun, but doesn't it make a mess? So many bowls and jugs and utensils...
