If you got KBG you can transplant plugs. I've renovated a few sections of my yard with 100% KBG for that reason. Because dog piss and drought will kill parts of it faster than it can self repair. And its easier to grow plugs in those seed flat things compared to overseeding.

It's been over 90 degrees for the past 3 months in South Louisiana, with the past month being almost constantly 100+ degrees. Everything I read said not to apply fertilizer or overseed at these temps. I wanted to thicken my centipede lawn but its been dormant. I'm a little worried it won't bounce back despite watering. This drought + heatwave is rough.

I regret overseeding. I really wanted to do it, and was super excited to be researching what cultivars to get and all that. I spent a ton of money and got great seed. However, I don't have an irrigation system. Moving around sprinklers have been a pain in the ass. It takes hours to get a fraction of an inch over my lawn. I'm sick of it. Not doing this again until I have an irrigation system set up. Feel like I'm wasting my time and money right now and I'm not confident my seeds are even going to take since I"m not being consistent enough with watering.

I'm in the southern part of the transition zone and I'm thinking about adding kentucky blue grass in the backyard where the kids can play almost year round. Every year with just bermuda it goes dormant and the backyard gets pounded by kids playing. Almost have to start from scratch each spring. Has anyone tried this? There are only a couple of Bluemuda videos out there so I havent found much info about it.
@RickWilsonLawnCare
@RickWilsonLawnCare 11 ай бұрын
Kentucky blue grass won’t handle the heat very well during the summers. That said, you could always over seed with Kentucky blue grass in the winter when Bermuda goes dormant. When Bermuda comes out of dormancy, it will “choke” out the Kentucky blue grass and the process will need to be repeated annually. Hope that helps!

I live in St Louis, and I've got a pretty green, full lawn with TTTF. While I don't need to fill in any gaps, I'm concerned that I've got a lot of thatch. So, I'm planning to dethatch next week to get rid of it. And since the soil is heavy clay, I'm planning to aerate. Won't I need to overseed after I do those activities? Or should I skip the dethatching?
@CaseyBieker
@CaseyBieker 11 ай бұрын
Heavy thatch would be rare with TTTF, if you mulch it might be a buildup of clipping debris. I also live in an area with heavy clay and aeration at least once a year is absolutely necessary in my opinion. I have used a power rake before while also aerating and it just seemed like too much to me, it took a long time to recover. Now if I am “dethatching” the debris out of it, I go much lighter and don’t set the rake so deep.
@Thelawncarenut
@Thelawncarenut 11 ай бұрын
you can de-thatch, aerate and then if you have large bare areas that remain, then yes seed. But if not and it's just thin throughout, then thicken it up with doses of Flagship Fertilizer every 4 weeks until winter - that will thicken it up big time thelawncarenut.com/collections/granular-fertilizer/products/24-0-6-flagship-with-3-iron-and-bio-nite%E2%84%A2#

With how the last several years have been in Kansas, I think Buffalo would be best, but we also have areas of significant shade.
@Thelawncarenut
@Thelawncarenut 11 ай бұрын
@@bradkohlman3932 I've never had the chance to work with Buffalo grass but it does look pretty good. So the way to think about it is that if Buffalo is your primary turf, then everything else is a weed: bermuda, fescue, all of it, it's all weeds. If you look at it that way, it's easier to make decisions about what to use.
