The NFL made a whole new rule to contain Williams. The hands to the face rule if I remember correctly but I still have allot of respect for the Philly defenses during those few years. Again this is where Jimmy and the scouting staff was able to pick the right players in the draft. Erik Williams coming from a no name school and ending up as a starter his rookie year. He did struggle his first game, but he showed up when it counted. There's even an NFL Primetime segment on KZbin where Alvin Harper, Larry Brown, Erik Williams, and Dixon Edwards made their first start as rookies in week 10 in 1991. Still Erik Williams was the teammate you wanted in your corner. A vicious junkyard dog you let loose on game day. The problem was he would attack his own teammates during practice, even stories of Charles Haley and Erik Williams going at it during drills would have been something to watch. He got caught up with the partying, drugs, etc which sadly led up to the car accident. Yes, we all know he would have probably been a hall of famer, but that injury led to then Larry Allen playing and being able to play well enough to be a starter at guard the next season

@thelogicalcowboyКүн бұрын
@@terrenceliburd8655 When we say he wasn't the same we're not talking about he was a bum. Before his injury he could have been the goat lineman ever. After the injury he still was considered a top 5 lineman in football. He was still an alpro and a pro bowler. Those battles vs Fuller, Strahan and White (packers) was after Williams injury (1995-97). He was still nasty. Again when we say he was different after the car wreck we're mainly talking about the difference of being the goat (pre-car wreck) or a legend (after car wreck).

That way defensive linemen are thinking about beating him on a play rather than their actual job of getting to any ball carrier. If Nasty was a Madden stat, Erik Williams would've scored a perfect 100. He was so fun to cheer for. And I imagine he was fun to cheer against, too. Tragic regarding the auto accident. Was on a Hall of Fame projectory prior to that. ( 11:46 in, hairs standing on end reliving this memory. Listening to Madden is so nostalgic for those of us to be counted among lucky Cowboys fans in that era) I've loved so many of your videos, but this might be my favorite ever. DUDE ... when I saw the Dobler-stomp I knew this was going to be good. My dad and I used to love those Cards/Cowboys games. After he (Conrad) retired TV did a bit one week when he came to the Cowboys facility to do interviews for the upcoming game. It was like an SNL skit with Too Tall and the Beautiful Harvey Martin finding out he was there and running down the halls looking for him while he hid in closets and made his escape. MAN I wish I could find that for ya. Will keep my eyes open. Awesome start to the video! Cracked up when you showed Zendehaus (spelling?) ... the Bounty Bowl! man .. that is an entire video all by itself. Madden Moment "You don't have to be passive to be an offensive lineman" ... quick backstory: Madden of course was an offensive lineman and understood a big issue. Big guys are generally not aggressive. Nobody messes with a big guy. He wanted his offensive linemen to have that nasty streak which was hard to find. When he coached he would take his rookie OLine and put them in a room facing off vs each other in a giant pillow fight. According to Madden (best I recall) "It all starts off very silly with lots of laughter as they are just not aggressive. But eventually, someone gets in a good lick and the whole thing changes quickly becoming a brawl and you find out which of the big guys has the switch that can be flipped." Eric Williams was the switch. Another great video mate. As always .. many thanks!! #GoCowboys

This episode brought many memories back to my mind. The 'Bounty Bowl' and all that other drama with Philly and Buddy Ryan back in the day. It started a thing with me that lasts to this day. I hate the Eagles. I can't stand to see them win anything. Their fans are trash too! This even extends to the Phillies in the MLB. Their fans suck! The dominance of Big E in these games was noticed, but not as much of a factor as you just showed me. I remember him getting penalized for it too though, but not all the time. They really let them play their game back then. Our whole offensive line was badass, and you already showcased Larry Allen in another video about this. It just goes to show that you must have the entire package of a team to not only win, but dominate. As bad ass as this offense was in that era, the defense was even better, and that's why we won the Superbowl 3 times in a 4 year span, and the 49ers were the losers on the NFC side. The hapless Buffalo Bills lost 4 times in a row during that time for the AFC, all of them to the NFC East. That SB record will NEVER be broken. Thank you for entertaining all of us with these very well thought out and comprehensive compilations of Dallas Cowboys history LC. Great job, and keep them coming!!!!!

I disagree that his career really changed after his car accident in 94. Strike that- it did but he rebounded I felt. He was rather dominant and his old self by 96 and 97. I’d say 95 he wasn’t as quick it seemed but by 96 he was looking like his old self. I remember Tooth gap? I forget his name called him the toughest he went against. I sure hope this year he gets more votes but I suspect it might be a few years before he’s a finalist for the HOF! In fact, he’s almost going to the seniors pool, which will make it much harder for him to get into the HOF! Moose deserves it as the best FB, IMO, Of his era. Step deserves it and he’s not even been nominated this year! TBC..

Good post bro! This definitely should be his year! Hopefully, a video like this can raise some kind of attention. I'm going to try and make a definitive case for Williams's Hall of Fame election in a separate video. Appreciate you, bro.

Not sure he's the meanest of all time (a lot of stuff happened in the old days, lol when you had borderline psychopaths with day jobs playing for peanuts because they loved the violence), but Williams is the meanest modern O-Lineman I've seen. Loved the breakdown of him v Fuller, Strahan (even dropped the elbow lol!), and White. Clash of legends! His performance against greats is why he's still the starting RT on my All Time team. I basically count him as a HoFer because he'd be in the HoF if not for that car wreck.

@krl97a Lol Good point bro! Playing for peanuts just to cause pain! That's facts!! Landry talked about a player like that in the 50s. Those days must have been terrifying for quarterbacks and running backs. Lol. Always a pleasure brother!

I've been a lifetime DALLAS COWBOYS fan since the 1977 season. Erik Williams was a credit to the organization. His style and mentality of playing is how the game should be played. He was a gladiator in the hurt business! It's a shame that the NFL has become soft. Players like Williams no longer exist.

Funny story. We played the Cowboys in 93 and I was lined up on him, for most of the game. He was putting his hand up in my face mask for most of game. Finally in the 4th quarter, I told him to cut that sh$t out. He said “why, I’ve been doing it all game”. We both laughed…but he cut it out.

Great video!!! There was just a whole different mentality on that line once Williams became the starter at RT!! There were some lean years before but it’s what made the Cowboys the Bulls of the NFL Dallas lost 8 straight to Philly 6 straight to the Giants. It was a shame Jerome Brown died. That D was AWESOME!! Reggie NEVER should have left Philly. Fuller never should have left Houston. Williams was the Kryptonite for Reggie. Newton would have been the same for Jerome. I had the Eagles picking up Sean Gilbert at that spot in 95. Backed up by Darius Holland. The Eagles had to trade Leonard Renfro and their number one in 95. for him. He and BETTIS held out in 95. Newton would have handled him. Like I said, I created every teams dream team in 95. The best era in NFL history was weakened severely by the end of the decade.

So meanest Cowboy in our history? Well, in the Landry era we had tunz of classy players. I have a guy in mind, but he was more of a punk than mean. Guy was named Ray Matthews on the 1960 team who came over from the Steelers. Harvey Martin ....our GREATEST pass rusher. Parsons and especially Ware cannot wear his cleats. Randy White was possessed on game day. Ralph Neely I would put up there, nickname "Rotten." What is very ironic is Harvey and Erik both wore #79. How crazy is that? Erik's baptism....maybe worst game was a Cowboys blowout win at home vs Cardinals. Emily had 4 TD's tying a record , but Erik played for Tuinei at LT and gave up 4 sacks. Even in a blowout win Troy's chin was busted open. As a historian (can you tell?) Cowboys fan born and very sadly still here in Philthy, the Ice BALL ( not Bowl) game was a very horrible day in my life. Day after my Mom's funeral, lost her when I was 16. Every year Mom and me went to the Vet..head to toe Silver and Blue. Never will an eagle scum dictate to me what I wear to a stadium. I went by myself that day. Let's just say my white Bates jersey was covered in blood and not just mine. I learned and still live forever with the mindset that "If you're gonna die, DIE WITH YOUR BOOTS ON." For me one thing I will forever remember about Erik was the final drive to secure a game winning first down vs the Cardinals Nov 94. Troy was physically assaulted that day, the dirtiest hit ever on Troy by Wilbur Marshall on the first drive. Go back and watch Erik's reaction to the first down. Then less than 12 hrs was the car wreck.How is Erik NOT in the ROH/PFHOF??? Same can be said for Harvey. Also, his so called regression was overblown. Look at those clips just in this video from 95-97, does it look like he lost anything? I want to get an Erik jersey made soooo bad but just cannot find the proper manufacturer of the jersey from his years. So I am looking for Russell, Apex or Nike. The current blue jersey compared to 96-99 the Star sleeve. Is now smaller. I am sooo happy that player who killed Reggie White's bs legend was a Cowboy and especially from North Philthy. That is poetic justice. I must admit I loved when we took out that big mouth garbage Packer and I cannot spell his name properly so #64. He ran his mouth that entire week to the press. Loved the so called, "Man of God," get exposed be it "Jesus told me to become a Packer when I saw the helicopter" or his always mugging for the camera did not want to do so after the 95 Championship game. The man literally assaulted a camera man from Fox. Talk about a complete fraud. Finally, one of my favorite Cowboys games was when myself and Mom had end zone seats for the 86 game when YES we beat Buddy Ryan, his first game as HC vs us and we sacked Cavanaugh and Cunningham 12 times that day so we hold that single game sack record vs the eagles, not their 11 in 91. That said, I purchased a photo taken that day in 1991 from one of the greatest Cowboys photographers ever and I use it as inspiration to never give up, it will get better. It's a bloodied Troy sitting on the bench and leaning down talking to him was Jerry. As Troy states in a portrait book based on him: "Things are never as great as they seem, just as never bad as they seem." My other favorite Troyisim is, "I never want to walk ahead of my teammates." Between Roger and Troy, we are extremely fortunate to have those two as our leaders. That courtroom appearance and I am not talking about the Shenandoah video, is one of the greatest displays in leadership. I leave you with this, as this is the weekend of the Red River Rivalry. I encourage you to watch the 1985 installment here on KZbin. Troy won the only game he appeared in and for OU. OMG, Troy took a beating that day. Also it's amazing to see him to celebrate after a TD. Something we know he rarely did as a Cowboy. It reminded me of when he scored the GWTD for his first NFL victory. I know someone is going to rip me for this being too long. Oops, had to throw in the list of meanest Cowboys: John Niland, Cliff Harris and certainly top 5 ##66 Kevin Gogan
