I'm a dj and producer and my brother is a hardcore metal drummer. Now please preform Infant annihilator - C***crusher, Slaughter to prevail - demolisher, the number twelve looks like you - grandfather, Austin Archey - “Cursed to Die”. These drummers can't be played on pads, even a sequencer is hard as they play 16ths at 400bpm. What you do is percussion, not drumming. Yes there is a difference.

@@machinebeard1639 you can’t gravity blaster or have perfect swivel, simply the sound of how hard you hit the drum. I ended up taking so many samples from my brother. I listen to techno, then I will throw on some counterparts, dead swans, kublia khan. It’s totally different. There’s no way you can Thomas pridgen, especially not his improvisation.

I actually once was practicing when a random guy showed up and said these "pressing buttons" stuff was child play. I said okay and offered him to try my pads, with the metronome on. He didn't even know what a metronome was and, of course, messed up a basic groove lmao
@DragonFingerDrumsАй бұрын
One day people will realize that music comes from the person, not from the instrument! A skilled musician can play anything and make it sound musical, whereas someone who thinks it's all about the gear will never sound good, even with the finest quality "real" instruments that money can buy.

The craziest thing I ever saw was Kyle Kelso in NYC laying down drums for a track we were writing. It was on a regular midi piano, but there was a significant lag, like 40-50ms while laying it down. So as he was laying it down, it sounded horrendous. He finishes, one take, we listen back, and he had laid down what sounded like a very convincing real drum beat, and his timing was bang on, no quantize.

As a kid learning guitar I always played finger drums to get the groove - which vastly improved my rhythm. I then practiced fingerpicking the same way, learning pattern and cadence and differential weight. I've done it for so long now (almost 50 years) I don't even realize I'm doing it - every time I hear a groove... It drives my wife NUTS

Incredible that you have the time it takes to reach across the drums built into your fills. You are doing sick sound effects for an actual drummer.
@DanielACroft10 күн бұрын
Super impressive, it’s a really cool groove. It’s not the same thing as body separation between limbs though? I’m crap at drums so I don’t know but I’m learning on a kit and that’s the hardest thing for me is having different limbs doing different things all at the same time. Doesn’t change the fact that I’d be stoked to hear this on a track and doesn’t change the value of the music that it’s produced in one way or another IMO.

I don't think any percussionist would say that finger drumming isn't real drumming. Percussion is the art of hitting things (technically it doesn't even have to be hitting) to make sound, and if your fingers make sound against what they're hitting, that's percussion right there. Hell, a common instrument in orchestral music is just rubbing two pieces of sandpaper together.

This is fantastic. But is not real drumming. It wouldn't really matter if you could do this on a kit (electronic or normal, doesn't matter, or even some buckets). Otherwise you are not using the full coordination of your 4 limbs and the force/pressure that you need for certain beats. This is still very very impressive.

Like with most instruments, no amount of practice will ever be enough to reach this level if you don't also have the talent to reach it (or the "knack" for it)...and no amount of natural talent or knack will be enough if you don't also practice your ass off lol. Hope this answers your question

“If it sounds good, it sounds good” I don’t think we should compare these different methods of percussion. While it might be easier to start playing fast with fingers, an acoustic drummer can generally play polyrhythms more easily. In the end we both strive to make art (only one of us does so through a full-body workout), despite having been replaced by computers decades ago. Our musical achievements mean nothing.
@Crates-Media12 күн бұрын
I'm genuinely naive about this as an intermediate beatboxer and finger drummer, and a very novice drummer (but with some solid music theory understanding as I play several other instruments) - so please help me out. What is it in your estimation that makes it easier to play polyrhythms with a regular drum kit versus pads? Bearing in mind of course that not all pads are tiny squares like these.
@jellejoustra402412 күн бұрын
@@Crates-Media I’ve found it easier to separate rhythm in entire limbs rather than individual fingers. Though this may differ person-to-person
