It took me a long time to get comfortable using "unsafe" moves. When you're starting out a lot the info out there acts like you're going to die if you use anything unsafe, as if everyone is going to punish everything perfectly. I gave all my opponents way too much respect when they didn't earn it, but in return I would get partied on myself. It's so important to test your opponent with unsafe moves before you show respect in your play. You can probably get away with a lot more than you'd think.

Here's an idea: you should do basic outlines for every matchup. Examples: how to play against Law? What can he punish? What's his effective range? etc... Anyway your Tekken lessons are priceless. Keep up the good work!

This is such a great video. The point where you were talking about how match ups are truely between players and what moves are safe depends on the other player was genius.

"Tekken University Series" (TUS), I like that name. You could use that as a title for your future blue-screen tutorials probably, or something of that kind. Awesome video as always dude. I really love those.

That‘s indeed very interesting. I respected my opponents too much and played too safe at higher ranks and lost. But if you play bold and do unsafe stuff once in a while they won‘t expect it. For Lili‘s df4,4 would always get blocked and launched in the lower ranks but it works surprisingly often in the higher ranks.

The Hellsweep Paradox xDDD man you made my day also great content as always, just loving the way ppl like Framewhisperer PeterYMao and you yourself are trying to deal with the huge amount of information any new player has to face when approaching to a game like Tekken. Harada doesn't want frame data to be displayed in game in any way and Tekken lacks good built-in game tutorials for sure, but hey is fine for me, that's the way it was for so long, and as long as ppl already mentioned and you keep it up sharing the knowledge we will be fine. Love those lectures, well done bro!

Intermediate level play is pretty much people using moves that have a duckable high and a KND if it hits. And all of them are safe on block. I said exactly what TMM said about Paul in a recent thread on r/tekken: Keep distance, because his best moves have short range and he has SHIT for approach tools. Whenever I play Paul, I like keeping to the very edge of the range of b1, since it's hit-confirmable for +8.

i know its been years since you posted this but in my head ive drilled saftey into it to the point where i will freeze and not take risk. Hearing safety relative to the player really made me re think how i view risk.

Wow, that's quite enlighten me a lot. It's not about the move but about the one we face in that match. I'm Asuka main and at the moment I still in beginner rank that people did not even know to duck when getting her hell sweep (F+1 > D4 or 3,4) into combo, and I spammed it again and again (and well me too did not duck much so I got smashed by these kind of move a lot LOL)

One example for safety that's relative to your opponent - Rangchu vs Qudans. Qudans failed to punish Panda's FF2 even though it's an easy punish. And so Rangchu abused the crap out of that move. So it's not a green rank thing. Gaps of knowledge happen even at the pro level, and savvy players like Rangchu will pick up on it.

Hey TMM, fantastic video as always. I wanted to ask if/when are you planning on starting your General Rule series for each character? I am really looking forward to that series. Also have you considered adding video representation of moves that people may not be familiar with. Ik we can simply go lab the move, but it would be very initiative to see the move you are talking about in the same video if it's not too much work. Just a suggestion. Thanks again.

Lol so arslan was salty cause he lost to an unorthodox play style? He doesn’t seem him as a top player but arslan lost...what does that say about arslan? As Heihachi Mishima once said, “fighting is about who’s left standing. Nothing more.”
@theyoungmensclub87984 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure anyone that plays as clean as arslan or knee would be taken a back by how almost violent boa plays with kazuya (imo boa is a good player) that was just the 1st time boa fought arslan so he just surprised him, knee smacks boa all the time because knee has his number plus he’s knee and no one really beats him

First off im gonna say I agree with the stuff you say regarding relativity, and that you see top players adjusting their move usage to who they are playing (higher risk moves against bad players, since they go unpunished), and this is good information. But TMM, you can't be serious when defending high risk play, and disagreeing with probably the best player in the world right now. By saying this, you display a lack of fundamental knowledge about high level tekken. Top level koreans have for a very long time said this: "American and European players rely too much on 50/50s", and JDCR very recently said: "Players should start to use the fast moves more (like 1 jab), and not worry so much about the slow and risky moves". Do you think they say this just to troll? No it is because they have knowledge that lower/mid level players doesn't have. Of course you can win matches in tekken with playing risky, but that is considered GAMBLING; block = loss/hit = win. What you want in high level tekken is CONSISTENCY. In the end high level tekken is about CONTROLLING your opponent (not gambling with mixups) with df1s, jabs (that beat df1 into another df1), fast high crushes that beat jab into another jab, sidesteps (that beat df1). This is the high level 50/50 guessing game that we call "basic tekken". And basic tekken is low risk. If you pair high basic tekken knowledge with amazing defence, you can beat any player by adjusting your defence while still maintaining safe offensive play. Almost the only time you see high level players take high risks, is when the time is winding down and they need a comeback. Other than that they try to (again) CONTROL their opponent with basic tekken. And this is why arslan ash is considered maybe the worlds best player right now. He uses Geese and Kazumi (which compliments the low risk style perfectly, especially kazumi), he plays them safe and is probably the best player at basic tekken, and he is probably one of the worlds best defensive players as well. Yes he lost a match against a risky player, but Boaluvb gambled, and he won. Has he ever won a big tournament? No.. will you see him win a big tournament? probably not.. Ofc some characters doesn't have the perfect tool set for basic tekken mastery like kazumi, and are prone to doing different things to deal with it. BUT what I explained above is the general idea that you shold try to implement with your character in high level play. Dude this misinformation pisses me off. You have a big voice in the community, use it well, use it sparingly.

Thanks for basically encouraging people to play like fuckin scrubs. There is already a slew of people up at Genbu who don't even know how to low parry combo or stop pressing buttons at -5 and now you are basically encouraging them to do bullshit until it gets punished. How about we just say: "Try to play more compact and precise". Because at the end of the day why sully your moveset with garbage? Then you are just going to instinctually throw garbage moves out when it isn't your turn like people already do all the time, making online a terrible fuckin experience for everyone. Sure it's nice to electric kids in the face when they make themselves -20 but it just makes the game less interesting by a long shot. And then you have characters like Alisa or Bob or Eddy who, arent that bad to fight until they decide to do your famous "LALALALALA" and go all over the place at 3 bars.

I understand this more with Mortal Kombat XL. I used to play it too safe and it ended up being a poke war and I'd slip up and get buttfucked in the corner. It was very strange but the reason for this was because I didn't challenge the opponent and my zoning was basically nonexistent.
