Skating with a chair is very classicly Dutch, you'll see it on old winter paintings as well. That's how you learn to ice skate. The chair helps you keep your balance when you're not very good at it yet.

The thing is: Efteling is a park of nostalgia. The more you come the more you remember. Exploring everything takes time and untill you understand it you are probably like; 'This just happened.' This is also why most of the Dutch people like it so much.

I'm going to attempt to translate the second pre-show from villa volta here! This house, this cursed house! It's like hell. That one cursed evening in the Belgian Kempen. The sun stood low and we were searching for beds for the night, but there were no signs of towns. But suddenly, in the distance came a big building. The abbey of Postel did we know. We brought the horses to a gallop, and before that the sun was away, we came at the Chappell. There were lights behind the windows and it was dead silent. No monniks singing or praying. Behind the door golden chalices and silver candlesticks just to grab Ha ha ha! With this thought in our heads we rammed the door. No men. The booty was gleaming on the altar. The candles were on, weird. My men broke the offer block open, and I emptied the altar. Suddenly, on my shoulder was a slim hand. I looked back and behind me stood a young woman, with her eyes full of fire. Everyone saw her, and it became silent. She looked like she was floating in he long white dress. For a moment I felt some fear. Then she said to me: ' You, Hugo van den Loonsche Duynen, you're desecrating this house! This is how it comes to repentance, and I will send the wrath of The Lord on you!' But I, I overcame my fear, pushed her back with a laugh. I said to the men to the hall, and saw her vanishing into nothing. A few days later I arrived at my house. I was shocked. On my house stood she, the woman from the Chappell! Her arms waved on the wind. I heard her voice like it was inside my head: 'nowhere in your own house, nor anywhere on earth shall you find peace, because you violated God's home. Just when, a noble man with a clean conscience like from a newborn child will enter your house, than you shall find peace in your home and in your heart. ' That curse, my gruesome fate, isn't broken until now. Enter with a clean soul, of what is left from my home, so that my soul gets the rest, which I yearn for so much. It's not perfect, but it's close enough!

@yamabws Yeah, Villa Volta is one of the best stories in the Efteling, also a great performance by the voice actor Jules Croiset, one of the Netherlands' truly great classic actors. I remember listening to him narrating Grimm fairytales on an old record I had as a kid, he just has the perfect voice for a dark story. It's just a shame that there is no english translation. They could do it like they did in Baron with the preshow, with an inobtrusive screen off to the side giving subtitles for the non-dutch audience. I think they could manage to get that in without it ruining the atmosphere of the preshow. Just as long as it doesn't light up the room too much. They could also update the preshow just a bit. Hugo's a pretty good animatronic, but he's a little primitive in terms of what could be done today, and there's not much else going on in terms of effects in the room otherwise, so just a few enhancements could really enhance it. Still one of my long-time favourite rides though. Especially with that amazing soundtrack.

About 10 years ago, it was the first time I went to 'De Efteling' with my girlfriend. We decided to do shrooms that day, already anticipating on going absolutely bananas on e.g. 'Vogel Rok' and 'De Vliegende Hollander' (The Flying Dutchman). Now... I could literally write an entire book about our experiences that day, but the bottom line is we never got out of 'Het Sprookjesbos' (Fairytale Forest). Ever since, 'Het Sprookjesbos' is the only attraction in the world (and I've seen some) that truly deserves a little, special place in my heart.

15:36 there are at least 2 places that I'm aware of in the states, both called Enchanted Forest, one in Oregon and one in Old Forge, NY. I grew up going to the latter and while unfortunately they've focused more on the water rides in recent years, I still enjoy going into the little diorama buildings. Great Escape in Lake George also used to have a little fairytale village (Story town USA), and there's a Santa village in Lake Placid. The best part about the Efteling is that they're continually maintaining their old attractions and even adding new fairy tales.

I agree it is a shame there is no English version of the pre show on Villa Volta. In short, the story of Villa Volta goes like this: Hugo van den Loonsche Duynen, the owner of Villa Volta, was the leader of “The Goat Riders”, a 19th century gang of burglars, robbers and rapists. According to local folklore, they travelled through the night sky on the back of flying goats, causing fear among the people living in the Kempen-region of southern Netherlands and northern Belgium. One night, Hugo and his gang tried to rob the chapel of Postel Abbey, where he was confronted with a young woman with flaming eyes and dressed in white. While hovering through the chapel she warned him: “You, Hugo van den Loonsche Duynen, you are desecrating this chapel. Now redeem yourself, or the wrath of the Lord might be called upon you”. Greedy as he was, Hugo pushed her aside and continued robbing the chapel. Back home, he saw her again, standing on the top of the front gable of his mansion. He heard her voice inside is head, speaking: “Since you've desecrated the house of God, you will never ever find rest or peace. Neither in this mansion nor anywhere in this world. Only when a noble person with a heart and soul as pure as a newborn's enters your mansion, you will again find peace in your heart and in your house.” At the end of the pre show, Hugo is asking all visitors to enter his mansion with a pure soul, hoping it will end the curse that is haunting his mansion and his heart.

It took some googling and Wikipedia searches but I found what I was looking for. There is a wiki page for the madhouse type of ride which list them all over the world but nothing looked familiar. I remembered getting on something similar as a child though so I started looking at pages for the local parks I would have gone to. I finally figured out it was the Wonder House at Dutch Wonderland in Pennsylvania. I think it's one of the old school haunted swing rides that preceded the madhouse rides which is why it wasn't listed on that page. It's been about 4 decades, give or take a few years, since I was on it.
@lauraschlueter2876 жыл бұрын
@Ad Lockhorst I hardly even remember the ride at Dutch Wonderland it's been so long now. Given the age of the ride I'm sure it was very basic. Every time he showed a madhouse though I had these vague memories and I was determined to track down the source. :)

There are actually two madhouses in the states called ‘Houdini's Great Escape’ and ‘Houdini: The Great Escape’ at Six Flags Great Adventure and Six Flags New England respectively. They're copies of each other on the interior and also copies of a madhouse called ‘La Maison Magique d'Houdini’ in Bellewaerde in Belgium (a park that you should definitely visit one day)! All three of them opened in 1999. I know all of this stuff because I really love madhouses! My favourite is Villa Volta! And I'm guessing your favourite is probably Hex ;)? Also some fun facts for you! Spookslot means Haunted Castle (so Alex actually got it right) and Toverland means Magicland!
