These guys had a great manager. They played Woodstock in 1969! Then perfect timing when the 50s became in vogue in 1973 (American Graffiti movie and Happy Days TV series) which led to the Sha Na Na syndicated TV series.

At the time I couldn’t stand this music. (Along with Disco and Opera) I remember they had a show on tv and id be like sigh…… But watching them now some fifties years later I can appreciate the talent they brought to the stage and pull off a performance like this. Thanks for the upload MS.

I like the sax solo at 1:35. But it’s funny how each band member, when he has a solo, gets the center Mic. I think this was more common back then. At 1:53 he starts to sing and he’s actually very good. I think maybe this band had more talent than recognized probably because people saw them only as a 50s novelty act perhaps. It’s not exactly my cup of tea but I think they’re very good. One other thing I noticed: they have a great separation of singing types. I can hear tenors and baritones and maybe even a bass singer. It’s truly as if their voices ARE musical instruments.

I wonder what they thought of this music at the time. It had only been 14 years since the 1950s. That'd be like someone trying to bring back the sound of 2010 right now.

As a kid in the ‘70s, born ‘69, I had no idea this was a ‘50s nostalgia thing: Happy Days, American Graffiti, etc. I thought it was all part of our modern ‘70’s culture.😂

I had to look it up. I guess “Shanana” is an expression of delight. Now I don’t know if the word came from the group, or if the group liked the word and slightly modified it for the name of the band. I suspect the band’s name created the expression. But don’t quote me.

Actually, the name "Sha Na Na" was taken from the chorus background chant of this song...in fact, the group was originally called The Kingsmen, but changed it b/c there was already an act with that name (the band that recorded "Louie, Louie").
