@DavidRLentz2 жыл бұрын
Yes, full build! And please clarify how one can replicate variants and overhauls. I understand from what I can see from your box opening that you have an early-war Enterprise, circa early- to mid-1942. Please clarify. I recall the Enterprise round July 1943 till October 1943 had undergone an overhaul at a naval facility (a drydock?) in Bremerton, Washington that had added waterline anti-torpedo blisters, new radars, Oerlikon and Bofors anti-aircraft guns, etc., extended the flight deck, amongst perhaps others. (The Navy had built the USS Hornet [CV-8] several years after the USS Yorktown [CV-5] class ship and the Enterprise, so it already may have had some or all these upgrades.) The Navy also had exchanged the aircraft to Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat Fighters and Grumman TBF-1 Avenger Torpedo Bombers, and uprated Douglas SBD Dauntless Dive Bombers. Would Trumpeter be issuing another, late-war kit of the Enterprise? Or would one need aftermarket conversion sets? Or would one need to scratch build all these? From what I can see of Trumpeter's arrangement of the hull and the hull inserts, the company's designers have made allowances for differentiation, anticipating other versions. My guess is that Trumpeter's USS Hornet kit incorporates similar variations as I discuss here. My build, to my keen regret (you already have me salivating!), will not be immediate. Still, I would like to assemble two versions together, depicting them underway and engaged in flight operations, with the flight deck terribly busy. The late-war Enterprise would include several Chance Vought F4U-2 Corsair night fighters. (I am uncertain as to the correct dating for these.)

do you think trumpeter will make a modern aircraft carrier in 1/200 scale
@TheMidwestModelShop2 жыл бұрын
Only if there’s a market for it. Trumpeter is big enough now that everything is driven by money. That is why you always see releases of new kits that are the exact same subject (BF-109, P-51, Tiger tanks, etc) because that is what we as modelers buy all of the time.

If you're wanting to do a water line model but still be able to see the propellers and stuff you could do an epoxy type of diorama. This would allow you too see the detail from the side as if it were underwater, and from the top you could build an ocean look to it

Unfortunately you've got the Guadacanal or earlier USS Enterprise, which has 1.1in Chicago piano AA guns not 40mm Bofors so now you've got a choice build as is or update the AA suite and radars to make it cooler or go as is. Oh, of all the Trumpeter model ships I've seen one half of the ship is great the other not so good. If you need a hand I helped update the 1/72 scale scratch built USS Enterprise at EAA museum in Oshkosh, WI. Yes, I was an IPMS member .

@AvengerII2 жыл бұрын
The link in the description takes you to a description of the model kits which has a listing of the aircraft included. Yes, everything you listed is there. The Enterprise didn't get Hellcat fighters until late 1943. For about six month in 1944, a night fighter group of F4U Corsairs was based on Enterprise but I imagine they were transferred to a larger Essex-class ship. The F4U night fighters were replaced by a night fighter group of Hellcats. Enterprise's defense fighters for the rest of the war were Hellcats. The smaller escort and light carriers still based F4F Wildcats because they were too small to support Hellcats and Corsairs adequately.

Another Aircraft decal concern: The stars all lack the red "Meatball" that was seen prior to the deletion of all red from USN markings. I would have thought they'd at least included them as separate centers, as the ship looks to represent the "Big E" as she was before her first wartime refit in Late 1942. (More AA guns were added and the last TBD Devastators replaced.) The "Meatballs were deleted just around Midway (b4 or after I don't recall which.)
@jimelchek57012 жыл бұрын
I'm a few weeks into the build, and as best as I can tell the Trumpeter kit depicts the ship (more or less) just after Midway, but the Pontos add-ons are very late 1942. Some differences... Trumpeter has some 50 cal machine guns, while Pontos only has 20mms. Trumpeter has the ship's boats and cribs, while Pontos does not (ships in a war zone would not likely carry that many boats, if any). Pontos has more electronic radar gear. The "less" of the Trumpeter "more or less" is that the Trumpeter kit has the big "6" deck markings that were not in place until late 1943/44. And the forward sponsons are questionable (Pontos has you removing them.) Either way, it will be fun to watch Ben work through a very complex build. Unlike the Arizona, Missouri, and Titanic builds which have many standalone sub-assemblies, there are a HUGE amount of "dependent" assemblies that all must perfectly align (flight deck girder structures to hanger deck... hanger deck panels end-to-end, etc)
@alfredpease43402 жыл бұрын

Good choice for your next build, man. The most heavily decorated ship in the history of the US Navy. And yeah the steel plates being on the hanger deck is accurate. On US carriers that were built before and during WW2 the flight deck wasn't the main strength deck on them. This made it to where our carriers could carry more aircraft than other navies' carriers. The main strength deck was the hanger deck on a US carrier, hence why on the model's hanger deck you see steel plate detail.

I'm excited that you're planning on a diorama for the Enterprise! I love watching Ebroin's and Studio Blue Ocean's dioramas (especially Ebroin's explosions), but a lot of the ships are 1/700 so they suffer from the scale effect making the ships look clunky. Yours ought to look great at 1/200! (Not too late to make the Titanic a diorama complete with iceberg.)

I think possibly the upper pieces of the small boats and launches you are having the heartburn over are intended to represent tight fitting foul weather canvas covers. Hard to see through the clear wrap but that would be my guess. These boats were typically stowed in a location that exposed them to the elements and any features above the gunwales wouldn't be visible.
@TheMidwestModelShop2 жыл бұрын
Well I’m running out of Tums!!! The detail sets fix the boats completely. But like you said, would you even see them? Another viewer said that during war they were probably removed all together. That means I have to decide if I want to include them or not.

You’re right. The early war hull is obviously easier to mold. So that’s probably why they did it. Also, if they made a late war hull, people would complain that there isn’t an early hull. I was looking at it and I don’t think it would be that hard to add torpedo blisters if you wanted to model it that way. They also provide 47 oerlikon cannons. I think that’s enough for late war 🤷🏻♂️

You mentioned Doyle's book on the Enterprise. There are two others worthy of mention and inclusion in your reference materials: Edward Stafford's "Big E" and especially the illustrated version with input by Paul Stillwell -- this is a great history of the ship and the men who fought on her plus the illustrated version (which is almost a "coffee-table" book) has many, many pictures, some of which aren't in Doyle's book. Some are in color as well. The second book is Barrett Tillman's "Enterprise" -- another good history of the ship and its men -- some pictures but mostly for the history. Always nice to have the history of the ship, I think.

Ben, you've officially lost your mind! I'd thought that the "Twin Titanics" might have cured you and Nora, but it looks as though "You're at it AGAIN!" A gentleman, who calls himself "The Norwegian Modeler" put together great reviews of both the Pontos and KA/MK add-ons. Taking the bait I got a bad case of "Gee, I can do this thing." and I bought the main kit and the Pontos (w/ blue deck) adder. I'm about two weeks into the thing (completed the hull, and 3 of the 6 hanger deck panels). Things are going well, with only a few "gotchas". That said I can see some major challenges ahead. For example those 5" guns, although only about 1/2" x 1/2" have a gazillion pieces, some at the sub-atomic level (for grins check out part X-91, if you can see it). I've already started chanting my favorite mantra from your Arizona build... "Remember folks, most people will be viewing your model from... then you would point to the general direction of Peoria (or some other way distant location)." Trumpy has the kit in a strange timeframe. Really the armaments and aircraft are 40-42, but the paint scheme is really first few months of 42. The 1.1ince "Chicago Pianos" get yanked off in late 42 (to make those work, a Gunner's Mate lay under the mount and pounded on the receivers with 4# sledge when they jammed, which was often). The stars on the a/c are probably an English-to-Metric conversion error--but, huge roundels (like 72" or 84" were used on the fuselage, and 48"-60" one on the wings) in the era. You;ll need aircraft references, too, as this was right at the end of chrome yellow wings, and the blue over white was mixed in with the 3-color scheme. Squadron colors would also be wanted, still, as well. The hull is missing the 7 (maybe 9) Docking keels which are of a prominent size, and the bulb bow is way off as moulded--in case you ned more arguments for waterlining the kit. Trumpy's color page is dumb. That's neither Measure 1 nor Measure 11 (and if further in 1942, Measure 21) Your model, your pick, but overall Sea Blue and overall Navy Blue are soul-killing exercises to model (sea blue at least is lighter than Deck Blue by a couple of shades) and the the ship, as intended, becomes as light-sucking dark hole. So, you might want Measure 1. Done early enough, the deck would be in red mahogany stain rather than blue stain. For the deck stripes and nunbers, for sure a pale gray as white will be far too stark. For a while in '42 she had yellow stripes, and it's your pick whether radome tan or deck tan is a better "yellow" for those. The Catain's Gig and the Admiral's Barge did have those covered deck houses. Those were canvas-covered wood, and usually gleaming white, and the portholes were polished brass. They were much wider than Trumpy moulds them. The Barge will be dark blue on the hull; the Gig a white (pale gray) with a blue gunwale stripe. The rest of the boats will be the color of the adjacent superstructure. www.shipcamouflage.com/usn_cv.htm
