Have recently purchased one of these 2nd hand and had a weekend away 400 plus miles everything I expected quirky, comfortable, excellent fuel economy, just a couple of things I would say about this review its an 850 not a 1200 , so I wouldn't consider it a big twin in the modern sense, so yeah it needs more revs & gear changing having previously owned a 1200gs, it's gearchanging is an absolute joy by comparison, also I wouldn't consider it a retro & if it didn't have a TFT the motorcycle press would ruin it, if your considering something different try one you may find it's everything your looking for. ,

Nice to see the shaft drive, and ease of access to the rear shock absorber for easy adjustment. So many monoshocks hidden in the bowels of the bike, and directly in the line of fire from debris flung off the rear tyre. Matte blue looks nicer than Ronald MacDonald edition.

The gear position indicator probably works the same way as the one on my Harley. It calculates which gear you're in by comparing revs and road speed, so it won't work until you let the clutch out. Personally, the only time I really use it is when I'm cruising, to check whether I'm in 5th or 6th. I took a test ride on the V85TT and really liked it.

Correct. Clutch has to be fully out for it to register. But you do get used to it quickly. No biggy really

My first bike Was a Guzzi, tried other bikes made in Thailand, India , America and one with a motor from China in a german body 😆. Well, I’m still riding a Guzzi and just picked up a 2020 v85tt travel. To be noted- when you let the guzzi’s breath with better exhaust and a fuel Remab they come alive and sound like no other machine out there. speaking from experience.

I’ve just ordered a V85TT Andy and thought I'd mention that some of the negatives you identified are easily fixed: Heat - Fit a de-cat bypass pipe (makes it sound better too). Looks - Buy a solid colour option with black frame, the Red looks good IMO (also a bit cheaper!) Buffeting - Fit a touring screen + aero deflector, as you’ve done on your GS. Performance - Ditch the enormous panniers when you’re not using them! IMO performance is “sufficient” for real world use. Enjoyed your review, I hope you get to try the new V7 850 later this year, lovely bikes :-)

Cheers to Moto Guzzi for building motorcycles that constantly reminds you your on a motorcycle and not sitting atop an automobile on two wheels. I do agree TFT's should display information in analogue (dials and arrows) adding to the riders sensory input and riding experience. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Big Bird too.

Gene Clarke I have a V9 and love it. The TFT display is about the only thing that I would complain about. I’m old school, I like the needles. Certainly NOT a me too bike, everywhere you go, it stands out from the crowd. Moto Guzzi is a bike that you either love or hate. No middle ground. It is a “gentleman’s” bike

I have just bought my V85TT, I prefer the looks over the BMW R1200/1250GS. I like the minimalist switches. The second generation has the gear selection visible with the clutch in. The tall screen is great. The only niggle I have is the cruise control, when it is activated but not in use, the flashing light attracts the eye and I keep thinking that the indicator is on. It does have a nice sound from the exhaust, not to loud but not strangled like some. I am running in and on a 205 mile run it did 66 MPG.

I think it looks great, better looking than a GS in my opinion, you get used to any characteristics of any bike in time. 29c too hot to ride? Come out to the Balkans in July and August at 36c+, all the gear all the time goes out the window. Agree with you on the TFT screen, i like dials.

I think it's a great looking bike, a little bit outside the box so to speak, and that can't be a bad thing. I owned a Motto Guzzi Stelvio some years ago. The only way to describe the engine was it had soul. I think Motto Guzzi are on to a winner here.

To me the looks is way better than the BMW GS or any BMW all terrain, running out of steam at high speeds ? well is a 850 cc what do you expect, and if you add those huge panniers the wind resistant is maybe too much for the motor. The only real issue could be the heat coming from the motor, I am a old school rider so for me changing gears frequently is part of the enjoyment. Cheers.

Couldn't agree more. I sold my R1200GSA few years ago, and as much as I am partial to BMW, they have nothing in their lineup that appeals to me - visually in particular. This MG may be just it or me.

I have had the moto guzzi bobber v9 for three years now as you know. I loved the review and I'm very happy you had the chance to spend some time with it, it may not fully come across in your video but I know it's a bike experience you'll remember and mention for years to come. The con's I can relate to and I would add to the 'running out of puff' at high speeds that the sweet spot is around 55 - 60 in 5th gear which is pretty strange, I find that on long trips I now stay in the slow lane and accept a longer more cruiser style ride on motorways and may do all my distances on A roads from now on. I'd love one of the new V9's the new paint jobs are amazing. The pluses I can relate to aswel, it really is a head Turner and I've never had a bike that gets this many looks by half, and I mean...by half. The V7 and all it's iterations are in a market all of there own, a shaft driven 700 transverse twin? Pff brilliant. Yep definitely not bikes for everyone but I'd like everyone to have the experience of having rode one let's put it that way.

Come on TMF, of course it looks awesome. The problem for MG, in the UK, is it's not a predictable air-cooled retro twin roadster, fitted with knobbly tyres, brown seat and a grill over the headlight. So the mid-life crisis, British hipster bikers won't 'get it', as it won't fit in at the 'oily, old-school, smoked garage, coffee roasting, foundry, warehouse, which seems to the pervade of UK motorcycling these days. Hang on,...…...actually, it is air-cooled and fitted with knobblies, so maybe there's still hope :-)

I agree. If you are unable to perceive that you are in the wrong gear maybe get a Toyota Corolla. I love BMW as much as Mr. Flyer but just look at the price difference !

Absolutely. Riding for 30 years now and never felt the need for one on the bikes that didn't have one and never looked at it in bikes that did. Frankly, of one needs a gear indicator, then one is not fit to ride a manual transmission automobile. At max, a neutral indicator is helpful, that's it.

I agree. They're for people who shouldn't be riding bikes. If you don't know what gear you're in, or you can't FEEL what gear you're in (ie. know the characteristics of the engine in your bike), you shouldn't really be riding one. You won't be able to accelerate properly (particularly when overtaking), brake properly (using engine braking), corner properly (correct gear essential to accurate cornering) ETC ETC. But unfortunately we live in a world of "lifestyle" biking nowadays... a world where a bike helps your image, or instagram "brand", or belatedly gives you the impression you really ARE the rebel you really WEREN'T. Knowing what gear you're in instinctively is as important as knowing your road positioning and body position. Those of us who did it back in the day progressed from 125-250-400-600 etc. and learny all this along the way but nowadays throw some money on the table and ride off on a big bike having driven a car all your life and expect it to do everything for you, and spend half your time nodding and waving at everyone who also happens to be on two wheels, rather than doing what you should be, learning how to properly control it and concentrating on what's going on in front of and behind you.... End of sermon....

@@lama2584 It isn't elitism per se, it's a question of aptitude, ability and desire to actually know how to ride properly, rather than have a shiny two-wheeled fashion /attitude accessory. Those who are going to come, will... the rest who are passing through, we can do without. I don't even think it necessarily produces better drivers either until you actually learn (and I don't mean passing your test...) how to ride PROPERLY, ie. road positioning, hazard awareness, gear selection etc etc. You only have to view the average headcam footage on here to see that many are not learning a thing, and so many develop a chip on their shoulder arguing, revving and gesticulating at the slightest perceived infraction on their road space (a hangover from car ownership) that they are actually giving genuine bikers a WORSE name. I'm all for new bikers... I was a new biker in my teens, myself, of course, but would you accept a member on , say, your golf course, if they shat in the bunkers, dug holes in the green or spent all their time at the clubhouse waffling on about their shiny 4 grand handmade clubs as they go around with a 28 handicap never improving... I'd be much more open to them if they were interested in the mechanics of the game, wanted to improve, spent time on the practice range and knew they were part of a history. Sorry about the golf analogy... I don't even play! Ultimately, motorcycling is a means of transport, even more so than a club of members... number one priority is learning how to do it properly, for your own safety and enjoyment and those of other road users... and I am by no means a doddering old fart on the roads. That's my point, and in a long and convoluted way, gear indicators de-skill you....

I purchased mine used with about 3600 miles on it for a steal. Loaded with extra lights and software. It is a joy to ride and very comfortable. The power is a bit flat but I’m past my TLR1000 days and enjoy it for the price.

So no real negatives. Good.

Hi, you mention having to work the box to stay on the power, yet the old T3 850 pulled like a train throughout. Are these now a very short stroke motor that relies on revs & the ECU for most of the torque? Or have the modern emission controls just taken the guts out of Guzzis over the years . . .

@@loddude5706 This is a long stretch of the old V35/50 powertrain. The T3 had a heavy flywheel which gave the impressio n of grunt, these don't. From memory, i think this gives the same claimed Bhp as my le mans - I'd think this is practically more though as people check these days. Also, i'd guess it'd rev more as the small blocks always did like to rev.

I bought mine in Jan 20 and I must admit that I love it. Yes it isn't the most potent bike out there but if you stir the gearbox it is great fun to ride. Distinctive and comfortable too.

A big plus you over looked (and it really only comes to bear when you own one long enough), the valves are easy to adjust. The heads are out in the open so removing the valve covers (and a rubber bung near the fly wheel) and there you are. Everything is right there. Lock nuts and screws - no shims. It's a half hour job if you take your time. Others are much faster. Still say it's not a retro! Otherwise I agree, dual clocks are always preferable. No comments on fuel mileage; did I miss them?

Great review. I have a few comments of my own. I love the look of the Guzzi, but for a few key points : TFT screen becomes a bit irritating after a while, twin clocks would be much more suited. The front does let it down, a single headlight would be much better & get rid of the ugly beak. Never know why bikes have these. Overall though I like the colour combo. The bike is a bit sluggish and after getting back on my R9T I do notice this. But still a decent bike and something a bit different from all those GS's.

Nice review with a lot of information packed into a brief and to the point time period. Personally, I'm very attracted to this machine because it is unique, shaft driven, and quality-built. Interesting that you don't mention the handling at all. I assume that means that it's entirely neutral. it's good that you've finally found the world of Guzzi. Five years ago, there was the Guzzi 1200 Stelvio, a TT styled big block. Sadly, that engine didn't survive the Euro 4 regs, so we now have Guzzi only selling the 750/850 range and the 1400 Flying Butress. they're lovely things though, and Guzzi ownership is infectious... i have six!

Moto Guzzi V 85 TT Speciale Thank you for your great reviews TMF! After one week with our first Guzzi, which we bought second-hand with 11.210km: - gas handle - very hard to turn & short way to go too - anybody experienced? solutions except cruise control? We both get cramps & calluses! - not for people, how like to ride on their toes with a pillion - Above 85 km/h hurricane in our Schuberth C3´s. (Windshield upright) No puig available, we will try the Givi AF8203 sliding wind-screen. Any experiences? +/- no flying carpet but sporty chassis - have to check if fork can be softened. Lower seat is fine. Excellent seating & standing-position, handlebar 10cm wider than GSA. (we are 174 & 178cm tall) (GSA: Telelever & Paralever with ESA = flying carpet) -/+ spending a lot of time changing gears, because you want to change to the next gear with 2.500 U/min! Going up Iselsberg (Lienz) in the 6th!, turns in the 3rd!!! + The Boxer--engineers could get MG (Aprilia???) to build one for the GS! It´s so smooth! (compared to my 2014 R1200GSALC) But definitely reduce the gears when overtaking, because you can expect some people excellerating. - Petrol-gauge, Cruise control light blinking when activated: no comment * Lack of power? In the lower revs more grunt than my boxer. It is sporty, but no race-bike. Don´t use the frontbrake together with the enormous steering-angle. +/ It comes with no tools! (1 piece 5mm allen key for the screen) + Excellent feel, emotion, grunt, vibration, brakes, power, petrol consumption in the alps: 3l / 100 km, 4 with pillion

I am looking to learn how to ride motorcycles and this is the one I am currently looking at. The other ones being the KLR 650 and the V-Strom. My dad is a motorcycle rider and he has always told me to start out with 250cc and I have found it hard to find a road bike with that "small" of an engine.

TFT - I guess it’s a retro modern classic 3. Fork dive - change compression on the clickers 4. Heat - fixed with a Y - pipe ( cat delete ) 5. Screen - add screen deflector. 6. Great review Andy, I had three times the chance to ride one and the only gripe I had is the useless gear indicator as gears are shown only when clutch is engaged(?!?) This rev limiter thing was also something I ran into - did 120 km/h on the motorway and it indicated to shift (but have been in 6th already ;-) ). No issues other than that power wise - it goes up to 170 km/h with ease never had problems overtaking anyone (except street bikes ;-) ). Heat wise well if you're used to a Tiger 1200 the V85TT feels cold in comparison. I like the looks but usually I "fall in love" with a bike (and buy it) which hasn't happened with the V85TT so far - even if it is an overall excellent bike. For the colours somebody mentioned - the matt gray and blue make the bike look boring, the red doesn't work either so it boils down to either the McDonalds or red-white colour scheme of which I'd prefer the latter. I'm surprised Moto Guzzi is so rare in the UK. In the US, while they're not common, there are plenty of Moto Guzzi owners--you just have to look for us. I think my V85TT is a great bike, and, you're right, they are very comfortable. In two weeks, I'm leaving for a tour of the northern reaches of New England along the Canadian border, and I'm anticipating a very relaxed, comfortable experience. Peter

Thanks for the review. Agree that TFT dash is a drag - hate them - when I test drove the Triumph Scrambler 1200 I could not even read it half of the time due to sun glare. Maybe they are the concession to the iPhone generation? The other minus for me is the lack of tubeless tires - here at least Triumph made the right choice with the Scrambler 1200. Otherwise love this bike.

Very good made video, 👍 It would be great to inform your self a bit better: Gears are only shown when clutch is in, as on Indians and CanAm, too. There are several bikes out there that count gear like the Guzzi out of speed and rpm, these systems can only show the gear when clutch is released. I prefere the real gear indication, too , but it is easy to live with the indirect gear counting system, too. You just look prior clutching and you know where you are. All teleskopic forks dive! I like the telelver from BMW, too, but all other bikes on this planed dive down in its forks. List a missing of power for a 80hp bike comes from riding to much overpowered bikes 😉😉😂😂.

I have to agree with you that the front looks a little weird, but I love the color scheme and could get past the looks of the front of the bike if it weren’t for the lack of grunt at the top end. I love the rush of a high speed overtake. 😊

You forgot to mention it's the only bike in this category (adv 700cc-900cc) with shaft. It is losing some of power on transfer but, you don't have to mess with chain lube after few 100 miles. The biggest plus in my book. It does have quite ugly nose but, I do too. I guess part of character and charm. lol

Good afternoon M F , I’ve just taken delivery of a V85 TT centario edition . Only done 400 kms and so far so good. My only real gripe is the wind noise from 55/60 kms per hour. The dealer is fitting the bigger screen next week. I hope it works . I get less noise off my ‘naked’ Triumph Bonnieville. Apparently because I’m 6 foot tall doesn’t help ! I know there are better bikes available but I bought the Guzzi because of the Character that you mentioned. I actually like the looks of the bike, just like marmite ……… Anyway I enjoy your videos. No bull …. just the truth . By the way the 2021 version now as tubeless tyres and 5 riding modes !! I’m happy with just two,road and rain 😊 no off road stuff for me . Cheers from Johannesburg.

That's when you put your gear on as if it were cold. You might find this surprising, but leather is equally protective when it's either cold or hot (because it doesn't let any air through). So if you can bear a bit of sweat underneath, a leather jacket will protect you from the heat in the summer, particularly on those days when it's so hot that it's like you have a big hair dryer pointed at you. Riding in your T-shirt on those days to "cool off" is actually very deceptive because you think the wind is cooling you when in fact it's heating your body and causing you to sweat even more. So at anything above 36 degrees Celsius (i.e. body temperature), you should wear a leather jacket.

I own several motorcycles, I’ve down sized my bike in CCs and weight due to my age. I want something that I can still pick up if I drop it. I went into the dealership looking at a BMW R-NINE-T and drove off owning a Moto Guzzi V85TT , The Guzzi was loaded with the boxes where as the BMW was stripped down. The over all cost out the door was less expensive too. The Guzzi is my long hauler while my smaller RE-Himalayan is my putter around town. I’m very impressed with the overall dual sport-ability of the Moto-Guzzi despite its larger size , From the Las Vegas area USA. Thank you for the review

The part you told about the gear position indicator was very familiar. It was just like my previous Aprilia Shiver. The Shiver doesn't use a fysical switch for the position but it caculates it with speed and revs. The Guzzi uses probably the same system. Aprilia and Moto Guzzi do share a lot of electronic parts.

As usual a comprehensive review that sets the right context for the time I'd test the bike. As a former V7ii owner I sympathise with the "love or hate" angle on the style and the small quirks. The engine is what the technology allows in terms of usability/power. Being air cooled, two valve and pushrods coming from its original 60's design is remarkable what Piaggio has achieved given the pollution requirements nowadays, almost 100cv/lt, without an oil cooler. Even BMW and HD have evolved to some sort of liquid cooling for the heads to meet emission requirements while delivering the power people expect nowadays. I guess in that process MG have lost some of the grunt at low rpm it was famous for. Thanks again for the review.

I really enjoyed this video and like the bike but remember when we counted in our head what gear we were in. It seems like most electronics make us a bit lazy. Some are good safety items but most I could do with out and I'd take dials over TFT displays on any bike including my KTM 1290 SAR.

Thanks for the vid TMF, I'm so glad I watched this vid, prior to a test drive of the MG V85 TT Touring. Currently driving the NC750x DCT from Honda, and the Moto Guzzi is so far ahead from the NC, that I find myself missing the MG already!! lol Personally, I am not a fan of chain, and the shaft drive on the MG is sweet. So glad I found out about this bike, as I was considering going the BMW route. As for gear changes, sure, you feel it, but that's a positive in my view, considering the gear indicator is a bit slow to update. ;) Other pro's are the big screen, the NC is severely lacking, and something I felt after bringing the MG back, and taking the NC onto the motorway. Yikes! I do love diesel engines, and the torque on the MG is lovely. Sweet, easy to change gears, and lovely to ride. Joining a motorway is equally a beaut, as once you pop over 5000 rpms, it becomes a different beast entirely. Absolutely love the sideways kick to the right, when idling at traffic lights. Highly recommend you try the Touring version, if you ever get the chance.

Nice review, too bad you couldn't ride it on some gravel road, but as you said, it's not your bike. For me, it's all about the character of the bike! Being mostly weekend rider (as most of us I imagine), while riding I want the bike to put a smile on my face every single time I look at it, start it and ride it! And for me, the TT has it all! I have couple of bikes and all of them has very different characters, Triumph Street Scrambler, Ducati Scrambler 1100 Special and Yamaha Tracer 900. As far as speed goes, in my opinion todays bikes are insanely too quick! Yesterday I took a 450 km ride with Yamaha and found myself going 30% faster (in all conditions) than with Ducati which is fast! On the other hand, Triumph is the slowest but it gives me such a pleasure to ride it and don't have a need for a single hp more when I'm on it! For example, I tested new BMW S1000 XR and I loved it, but the thing is soooo easy ridiculously fast that I started to wonder what the hell am I doing going 165 kph (103 mph) in the fast corner, without any drama! So I guess I wouldn't have the power issue with a Guzzi. Have been watching your videos from the begining, keep on rolling!

The gear change indicator is slow because it doesn't have sensors like my Kawasaki Versys X 300. My 2021 Moto Guzzi V7 Stone Centenario has the same slow change you are experiencing and that's because it's not equipped with gear sensors, but it's done with a computer that measures the RPM vs the MPH and it calculates which gear you are in. You'll never get an instant gear change with that method but a lot of bikes do use that method because it's cheaper than installing sensors in the transmission. I believe my Himalayan was like that also.
