I bought one 2 years ago and have done 20,000 miles so far and love it. It hasn't missed beat, and adding Yoshimura can has improved the throttle response and set of Michelin Road 4's has improved the handling. It does 70 mpg in town and 90 mpg on run. Fantastic all round no nonsense motorbike.

Great first ride review TMF, looking forward to the long term review. I’ve had my SV for about 11 months and covered 4000 odd miles in all sorts of conditions. The bike hasn’t missed a beat. Typical Suzuki, bullet proof, dead reliable, well designed and everything just works. That V twin is superb and the power is just about right for real world riding.

Agree 100%, TMF. It's a perfect bike for everyday riding. And I really like Suzuki only adding very useful aids, such as the low rpm assist and the single button press start. I think the simplicity of the bike will also make maintenance easy and cheap.

My brother picked up the 2017 SV 650ABS new for $6350 US. He dropped on an Akra can, bar-end mirrors, and LED indicators. I absolutely love it, such a great bargain. And so much character with that V-twin power plant. It's just a fantastic all-around ride, he really scored a deal. Great review, and you nailed the points and summation for me!

I have this exact model for almost 3 years and 18,000 km as a year-round rider. I wanted to report about my problems: Done. Yes, really not the smallest issue I could report. And even after 3 years it still feels like I'm getting on my new bike every day, I'm thrilled and have never experienced it like that. And since there are hardly any smaller V2s built anymore and a new SV 1000 is not in sight either, I will keep my SV until it falls apart. In 200.000 km's or so ;-)

I have one of these and use it as a commuter and general two wheeled transport, for which it's great. I do have cars and other motorcycles but this gets a lot of use. I tried the MT, Duke, NC, Monster etc and found this the best balance for me. Bought new and got a fair amount off the list price. Over a year old now with zero issues (though I probably shouldn't say that). Servicing is cheap to. I also quite like the LCD which I think is used on a lot of Suzukis as it's very no-nonsense. It has a gear indicator, fuel gauge, range to empty etc, something other models in this class don't have, like the monster 797.

My second bike was a 2005 Suzuki SV1000S with fairings in red ! That was an awsome bike to own and experience because of its looks, sound and performance for a good price, I wish Suzuki would bring it back !

My second bike was an original SV650s which I absolutely loved. Used to take it over to Wales for long weekend tours as well as Sunday morning blasts. The engine, even back then, was lovely - the sound it made and power delivery. Now with ABS it is perfect for the money. The new frame also makes it look just like a Monster - no bad thing! TY TMF for taking me back - quite fancy one in the garage again :)

Purchased new a 17' back in Oct of last year. Great beginner bike with room to grow into. I have put almost 8,000 miles on the bike and it has been nothing but reliable. Swapped out the original tires at 7K miles and am now running the Dunlop Q3 plus. Changed the handling for the better!

Good review. I got one new in May. Done 2000 miles now and gets better every time I ride it. Engine is so smooth with loads of power up the top. Gear change is seamless. Incredibly stable handling at higher speeds and nice character to the whole bike. Once I got used to chucking it around at low speed found its incredibly manouverable. Did the test on the MT07 which was slightly more power bottom end and slightly better front brake. Overall prefer the SV650 - handling, character and engine smoothness being the main plus points.

I'm only on a cbt but recently had the pleasure of a DAS assessment ride on a sv650. Although my opinions are obviously skewed as my first taste of a 'proper' bike I really enjoyed it. Lovely feeling and sounding engine, very tractable and novice friendly - as was the manageable seat height. Brakes were confidence inspiring and the clear instruments with gear indicator really helped.

I have a 2019 SV650ABS and love it. It is nimble but also feels planted in turns. The other day I was accelerating relatively hard from around 55 mph and I noticed the bike fishtailing left and right several times. At first it seemed like a tank slapper, something I had never experienced before. However, it turned out to be some kind of oil slick on the road causing the rear wheel to lose traction. I later saw the culprit, a vintage Ferrari spraying, not dripping, some fuel/oil/water mixture from the exhaust. I am not a racer and had never experienced anything like it. I do remember not cutting the throttle abruptly and let the bike move. Remarkably, it straightened itself out, and I did not have to put my Tech-Air 5 vest to the test. I think that the bike’s stability was aided by its overall well sorted chassis and geometry. I am left terrified but also have gained some confidence in the rider friendliness of the SV650. I’ll keep riding and will pay even more attention to road conditions. I thought I’ll share this with the hope that someone may also learn from it and also consider the SV650 as a super fun bike that handles well even in tricky situations. I’ll post this on other sites as well and am curious what people think.

I had a similar experience with my 2018 SV650. After passing a puddle I accelerated at the exit of a corner not realising that the tarmac was still wet. Same fishtailing than you, the front wheel going from left to right several times. I thought I was going to have a very serious crash. Fortunately I didn't try to brake, released the throttle softly and the SV straightned itself. It took several minutes to my heart pulse to return to normal!

I love the bike, did 20 hours on it to get my license, but I went with a V-Strom due to its wind protection, which is essential for me often doing 90-95mph for long distances. If I lived in a city, I'd go with the SV, but the touring and offroad capability of the strom is very important for me.

I live in Poland, where the highway speed limit is 87 mph, and the fine for going between 93.5 and 99.5 is up to $27. I'm just using numbers friendly for UK/US audience. Going 100 mph on a expressway, not highway is a $80 ticket, going above that is $136 fine and you can't loose a license/have criminal charges. I'm not risking anything.

I don’t know why Suzuki don’t bring out a faired version, or a partially-faired version like my old SV650S. I think those options really added to the legend of the old model and the ‘S’ model certainly helped on long tours.

I’ve got a 1999 SV650 half faired. There is a reason why these engines have remained unchanged in nearly 20 years. They’re fantastic engines. Very torquey and friendly for new riders, sound great as well with a quality pipe on the end Sadly they’ve lost their styling now since they don’t offer a faired version anymore. The faired curvy and pointy both look good

I have test ride it, two weeks ago and, I can truly say that it is a great motorcycle for money, servicing is cheap, it's simple and easy to maintain, it's small it weighs only 40 kg more than my 125, when it comes to handling I think it's just because the handlebar is slightly tilted forward and it puts your wrist in slightly angled position, it only has abs and no electronics but it has plenty of power, it doesn't really matter which gear you're in and what revs, in slow traffic you can put it in 2nd gear and let the clutch out and it will roll at 10 mph without a problem, on a and b roads you can stay in 4th gear and you can cruse with the traffic and accelerate to "ticket speeds" really fast without shifting, I rode it for an hour and the consumption stayed at 65 mpg although I was having some fun, perfect bike for filtering it's so narrow and mirrors are higher than the car mirrors so you can fit in tight gaps, love it since I rode it

Now returning to riding after many years away. Always wanted a SV650 to keep my old Bandit 400 company.... but thought after my MSF course I might want to stick with a Ninja 300 like I had in the class, or try a dual sport. And then a bright yellow SV came up listed today for a good price, so I slapped a $200 holding deposit on it and looks like I'll be riding it home tomorrow. Not really feeling great about hopping on the freeway for the first time with a new bike, but your review helps me confirm I should be fine with it being a comfortable bike to ride. Looking forward to many miles of fun with it. Can't wait to hit some corners on back roads around Hood Canal or ride it up Mt Rainier (I'm in Wash state, US). In the end, I couldn't reconcile buying a used Ninja 300 or a new CFmoto 300 for about the same price as a used SV, so the used SV it is! Caveat - I did try to buy a used CBR500R yesterday but another guy beat me to it by 20 minutes. I learned my lesson this time and pulled the trigger, and while the CBR had more features I think the SV fits me (mentally and physically) better, while also having such a huge following and parts/upgrades available due to the long run of this model. And since my other bike is also a Suzuki, feels right.

I actually like the Gladius. To me it blends Ducati streetfighter and MV Agusta Brutale design element into the SV650. But I also read that Suzuki designed the Gladius to be more appealing to women so maybe it is working. I will be getting a used Gladius400 in a few months after I get my Japanese license (living in Tokyo now). Rode my friends Sv650 years ago and always wanted to get one after that.

Another great review !! Really looking forward to the long term on this bike Mr. Flyer ! I love the look of the bike in this color scheme. I just bought a 18 MT 07 after finding out my 16 FZ 07 was totaled by insurance. I bought it on a whim since I loved the 16 so much. I must say though I think the 18 is really ugly, really preferred the older styling. Kinda regretting that purchase with how good the sv is looking. I ended up buying the 16 back from insurance after I bought the 18 and currently working on getting it road legal. Always wanted a SV when I was younger so maybe a trade is in my future.

Thanks TMF. Making a decision about middleweight naked bikes is really difficult, there are so many options/flavours. Z650, MT07, SV650, CB650, they're all good everyday bikes that have enough power to commute and have fun on. They all have a different character engine wise and I don't think there's a bad one among them. I've owned the CB and an early SV, loved the inline howl on the CB and the v-twin grunt and exhaust note on the SV. I've ridden the MT07 and it's motor is a good one too. I'm taking an educated guess that the Kwak would have the least characterful motor, the slipper clutch worries me, I wouldn't be able to back it in. Spring is coming soon in Australia so I'll have to make a decision soon though, not a bad dilemma to have eh?

I prefer the MT07, though I loved the cafe racer version that Lambchop tested earlier in the year of the SV650.

Most of the cheap ones are from the bad old days of Italian reliability though, and will cost more to run. SVs are bullet proof besides kinda crappy fit and finish.

will M , there are not a lot of cheap used Ducatis where I live. I love the look of the 90 degree V-Twin, and I can live without $1,300 valve adjustments, so I like the Suzuki.

Another great review / First Look. I‘ve tested the SV650 (2018) for my wife and i have to say it was a funny and safety ride! Only with ABS but the basics of this bike are so good! I know some experienced riders who bought this Little Suzuki for having fun on twisty roads; no one of these riders had any issues. The bike feels very nimble and stable especially for smaler persons a very good and cheap Choice! I am very interested to hear from you what is your opinion After the in depth review of the SV650! Keep on riding TMF🏍💨

Really good too see that you are now able to get these sorts of bikes from manufacturers like Suzuki for long term reviews as they really have been out of fashion of late as they are pretty basic motorcycles as you say looking forward to what your long term thoughts will be Cheers Chips.

In the USA it is considered a "Beginner's Bike"... Most MSF instructors seems to suggest a 650 for safety reasons. With the new nimble 250 - 400 I wonder if their views are slightly out of date? Some States like NJ, apparently have a rule that if you take the driving test with a Bike less than 400cc then you full license reflects this i.e. your license will be for 400 or less - this idea seems to be disappearing. You can pick up a Permit to use a motorcycle at the DMV and ride ANY size Bike before the test. Best, Pete.

Glad you rode the SV. I’ve sold my original “curvy” this year to make space for my new MT09SP. I bought the SV new in 1999, made loads of friends from the SV650.org forum and ended spending loads on it like a full exhaust, ohlins suspension and better rubber. It transforms when you put an aftermarket exhaust on it. Shame they won’t let you do that on your long termer... oh... it’s an L twin not a parallel ;)

My first big bike was a Gladius. If you got past the looks (which a tail tidy and aftermarket exhaust helped) it was a brilliant all rounder. It was a great commuter and even an adequate sport tourer, I took it to the Alps and back no problem. The Gladius also had a better display with a RPM dial (no fuel gauge though) I traded it in for something with a taller seat which was better for my knees but it was a great first bike to get after passing my test. I'm sure the new SV is equally good as an all rounder.

Great vid as always. I hope you don't mind me offering a comment or three - 1) I credit your channel, your solid reviews of all the bikes you get to ride and general hints, tips and musings with reigniting my (sadly slumbering of late) interest in biking. Thank you for that. Also: 2) If it were possible, I think it would be great to see you produce some videos on classic bikes. I have a thing for '70s Japanese bikes - CB750 & 500 Four, K1 et al - because these were the bikes I saw around when I was an impressionable little kid and would love to hear your views on riding them in modern traffic etc. And: 3) It's good to see you reviewing scooters - I have a soft spot for them also - and hope you get a chance to get your hands on an old Vespa so we can get your take on buzzing the lanes on one of those. Anyway, keep up the good work, looking forward to the next video. Cheers.

I got to test ride a 2016 that came in on trade at the Harley dealer I was working at. Comfortable but felt a bit top heavy. My biggest complaint about it was there was high frequency vibes that went though the bars and made my hands tingle. Lots of low end torque and the power is very linear.

Another good review that gets the gist of the bike. Test rode it - good at everything (cheap too), apart from the seat/plank which I thought was very poor. My NC750S is similar in terms of performance, commuting, fun etc but has a far better seat. If Honda can do it so can Suzuki.

Interested to see how it gets off against the MT-07 because on paper, the MT spanks it. Much better build quality, custom parts (like the swingarm, not a parts-bin bike), no ugly welds on show, better front brakes, engine, etc.

MT-07 - the fan cuts in every time you come to a stop and it crunches into first gear like no other. I didn't like it at all. It was though very quick with the light weight and extra cc's.

Aaaaarrrgg;....V-TWIN! It's that motor that really MAKES the bike. A slip of the tongue I'm sure. I've had two of them and they are just bullet proof. However compared to the competition today, I wish they would find a way to drop at least 20lbs and make the seat a little more comfy and a tad lower.

I love the v-twin motor; I had a V-Strom 650. If I had to choose a do it all bike that is very reliable, has great stearing and a comfortable ride it would be that bike. Sorry, I'm not a naked bike guy. Suzuki makes great bike for a fair price. Are you already falling in love with Norway? I did and still am.
