The fact that Honda and Triumph are kind to KZbinrs makes me inclined to support those brands. Letting their products get some real reviews from locations all over the world instead of simply paid vacations with marketing videos really helps us understand them and reinforces confidence in their products. And what better testament than reviewers buying the demo units right from them? 😎

Bought the CB650R as my first big bike about 6 months ago. Had the Trident been out at the time it definitely would've been a contender at a lower price and with a couple extra gadgets. But I fell in love with the inline 4 engine on the honda and continue to do so every time I wind it up - it's dangerously addicting! For a stock exhaust it looks and sounds amazing but I agree with you especially on the seat. Can't wait to get off it after about 1 hour of riding. I think CBR650R (Faired version of CB650) can beat all the three bikes presented here in terms of all-rounder performance. As lucrative and performance-oriented as the truimphs sound, The bike is pathetic in reliability and super-expensive to maintain. Oil leaks from the engine, crank issues, gearbox issues, frequent valve failures, and electrical issues make it more stressful to maintain a truimph. Honda on the other hand simply a bulletproof in quality lasting as much as one wants to keep it. With regards to fuel economy, the hondas make close to 26 km/Litre (About 100 kms/ US gallon), while the other two not even returns half the honda does. The most practical and maintenance-free bike is Honda for sure. Truimph is for someone who has been born with a Silver spoon and doesn't care about the spending.

I too have been looking at the new machines for a potential replacement for mine as I feel like some ABS and TC would be nice to haves. But, based on what I have seen and ridden, I just cannot find anything that gives me the same giddiness that the older Street Triple does. That being said, one plus point for the Honda - that noise! It has a wicked whine as you are accelerating and the howl of a 4 is always attractive. Reminds me of the 600 Bandit I rode for my DAS. Phew what a monster that was over 6000RPM. Fantastic video. I’ve been thinking about a second bike, and I know I want a Triumph. When I think about the price of the new Speed Triple 1200 RS, I cringe. It’s a right proper bike, but I would seldom use it to the full potential. So I’ve been thinking about the Street Triple. I’d prefer second hand too, and this morning you post this. It’s like you read my bloody mind. Thanks and awesome video. Cheers.
@markjackson76503 жыл бұрын
I reckon you'll be happy with either the street or the speed triple as I'm sure they are both awesome. However I don't quite understand why people say they didn't buy the bigger bike because they can't use it to its full potential. While I fully agree you can't, or at least shouldn't, use a litre plus bike to it's full potential. But you can't really use a mid capacity bike to it's full potential either, a street triple will still have you eating cold porridge every morning if you get caught. I would actually make the case that a larger capacity bike makes more sense on the road because their bike powerful engines effortlessly munch mile after mile. They are just as happy plodding around using their grunt as they are roaring to the redline. Where as most middleweights don't actually have that much grunt low down and usually need revved out to get a hussle on, which lends itself to more aggressive sporty riding. Just my 2c on the matter, happy riding whatever you chose 🙂
@ashleyreynolds66043 жыл бұрын
Buy a second hand one. The R is arguably the better bike on UK roads. You'll 'only' have 140bhp which is enough no matter what anybody thinks. Numbers these days are all about willy waving. I'll lay good money there's nobody here that can ride the wheels off the old bike, myself included. There's a secondhand R on Ebay with around 4000 miles for £8200 - bargain.

Nice little comparison Andy. It's easy to get carried away with all the latest and greatest shiny new bikes but the truth is there are some cracking good used machines out there. One of the great unsung middleweights [besides the Street Triple] is Ducati's 848 Streetfighter. It's a lovely looking bike with 132 hp on tap [more than any of the current crop of naked mids]. It handles beautifully [it has the superbike chassis] and has traction control. I don't know if you have ever ridden one but I would highly recommend a go on one. Michael Neaves [of MCN fame] still really rates them today [he had one on long term loan a few years back]. Great vid mate, keep them coming.

I will say that I think the honda could have been revved out more. After riding a stock one just yesterday, I noticed that the bike still wanted the revs like a 600cc, although it's buzy at high rpm. I found the 650 to be the Jekyll and Hyde that I want with a 600, but with the 650 riding comfortably in 5th gear at almost any speed it feels remarkably well suited to a variety of riding styles.

I have been pining for a bike and have been looking at new. I honestly have to say that I think you've gotten me to consider the older ST again. If I'm going to get a starter bike at a lesser price, I feel the ST is going to offer more in the long run , and then be a nice stepping stone to the newer ST, while being at a price that I will be more than happy to keep it in the stable as opposed to selling it to get something else.

Consider insurance costs too. I've been riding for 23 years and have lots of training and anything newer than 2017 was ridiculous for insurance, even though it would be owned outright. Ins on a lightly used top of the line at the time bike was 1/3 or less the cost per month.

I'm watching because I'm curious about the 660 vs the 675. I had a 675 which although is a detuned Daytona engine, it still wants to rev! It didn't like cruising at lower revs. It really wanted me to rev it hard. I know the power is down on the trident. I'm mostly curious about the torque curve and how that compares to the old triple. Comparing the 660 to the newer 765 is just not a question I'd bother asking. The power of the 765 is so good that Triumph had to increase the capacity of the Speed Triple to make it worth buying over the Street

I love my Triple. I’ve the same as yours. You can ride it slow or you can ride it very fast. Torque everywhere. It never fails to amaze me. Plus In black & gold it’s just a sexy thang pure & simple.

Great review Andy. A very interesting comparison. Incidentally, I am now obsessed with the white vans in your area. I counted 4.

Top Job TMF, as per usual. But have to say the black van at the end spoiled the video a bit for me, it's not as good as the white van...

Yes like you still love the street triple, and I just wanted to mention an amazing bit of kit I found out about and have purchased one after my 8 month old BMW 1250 GS ADV lost a cell on the battery and left me stranded having to call BMW rescue out, not wanting ever to be stranded again for a dead battery I started looking at solutions, and I found something that could be priceless for motorcyclists and car drivers alike. It is a small jump starter kit that is really small but has the ability to jump start a bike or car up to twenty times from one charge, it ways two pounds is 175 mm long 75mm wide 50 mm deep and has a 500 amp lithium battery it is made in the States and it is available in the UK it is called a Noco GB 20 genius boost jump starter. Me personally will carry one in my emergency kit. I just wanted to share it with you thinking you could help many people from being stranded in the middle of nowhere, they are about 80 to 85 pounds, so not cheap but could be worth every last penny when you need to use it...

Yes I have something similar - about the size of a packet of cigarettes and I once jump started my old Range Rover with it would you believe! Got me out of a hole when I was stranded in Devon a few years back....

Your videos are excellent. Yamaha and Kawasaki PR departments need to think about their marketing strategies. I'm sure most motorcycle consumers prefer this type of video where your an "ordinary" bloke (like us & ladies) . The bikes are tested in near identical circumstances on a UK both A and B roads. In my opinion far better than having a load of Journalists flown out to somewhere sunny for a bike launch where they all write the same propaganda in fear of never being invited to one again!

Went out this weekend and saw the new Trident, gorgeous! What stuck out to me was how compact it was. It seems even smaller than others in the class, but maybe it was just me not having another naked side by side. Either way, we have come to a point in motorcycles where you can be in a room surrounded by them, close your eyes, spin and point and land on a great bike. Thanks for the review!

Nice comparison. Looked at the Trident as well. Glad I went for the Street Triple. Regarding the numbers; i believe the ST has the torque lower down the rev range at about 9200 and is 167kgs dry 😎

Loving the ‘slide into camera’ 😝 Nothing wrong with the Street Triple tbh. Does make me increasingly reluctant to shell out £15-20k on a bike when I can get something 95% as good for a fraction of the cost

I am looking at a '12 STR tomorrow night because insurance for anything newer than 2017 is outrageous for insurance! The ST-R is well set up, light! And fully adjustable suspension.

Thanks for posting. LP Harman a new sponsor? ;) Interesting how the more things change, the more they stay the same. Out of those three, the Street Triple would be my bike of choice. After 10 years, the only difference is ABS and maybe traction control. Of the three bikes I have, my 2004 is probably my favorite and the least likely one I would sell. Very illuminating video.

Another great video. Though the Honda is more money I think the maintenance cost would even that out. Oil changes are better on the Trident at 10,000 miles (16000 km) vs 8000 miles (12875 km). The problem is the valve clearance check. The Trident is every 12000 miles (20000 km) while the CB650r is 24000 miles (38625 km). When I was looking at buying a Tiger 800 and asked about the cost of that service I was told it was about $800.00 vs $500.00 - $600.00 I was quoted for a Yamaha Inline 4. Since I do my own oil changes the cost is very small on that service. If you owned the bike for 50,000 miles the valve service would have cost about $3200.00 on the Triumph vs $1000.00 to $1200.00 on the Honda. Triumph also list balancing the throttle bodies every 10,000 miles, was not listed for the Honda.

Nice review mate it pointed me in the direction of looking into the cb650r, ive just done my test at 36 year old after spending my childhood and youth on the tracks riding ts50 as 10 year old up too a ttr650 at 16, took me a 2 hour leason for the mod 1 and 3 hours before my mod 2, we trained on a sv650 but i used a honda grom for my cbt lol midget bike but nice to ride, the sv650 power wasnt in anyway scary power at 72hp so i knew id be looking at anything from 80-110bhp for a first bike, with the sv i didn't like how it missed gear changes going from second too third every time and it felt very dated even tho it was a 2021 plate it really wasnt my kind of bike, so i had my heart set on a street triple looking at a 2018 rs and a 2019 r which were pretty costly around the 7-8 mark,I started looking a field looking at mt07 the tridant and a gsx s750 which i believe looks the best in black and was the one i thought i was going too go for until i seen the cb650r in red with mods wow! ended up choosing the 2020 cb650r which for me ticked all the boxes it had tail tidy and custom exhaust, seat cowl, black side panels to go with the lovely red wine tank gold forks too just looks so good, 94hp and traction control, abs, full service history at 12k miles for around the 5k mark it was a deal I couldn't turn down, i plan keeping this for a very long time on Scottish roads you dont get a very long stretch in the Highlands so this bike will never feel like its lacking in my opinion we ride on bendy rough damp roads 90% of the time, an mt07 is probably the best as it's suited too these roads with the lower too midrange torque but it lacks in driver aids and the suspension and the looks arnt too good imo, anyway keep smashing the vids mate love your content

I had a couple of hours on a new trident the other day, what a cracking bike for the money. It’s batting way above it’s pay grade, it would be the trident for me out of the three you looked at here. Good little test.

@@TheMissendenFlyer my you are up early, and in answer to the Q, street triple yes, this particular honda no, I have always been a street triple fan, a few years ago i wrote a piece for southeastbiker mag where I put the street against a dsytona, both bikes were great to ride, I like working a bike when I ride. I sold a gsxr 1000 k5 to buy a tuono as I found the k5 too smooth, the triples from Triumph are in such a sweet spot bridging that smooth/twin gap.... phew, anyway. Trident , grest bike triumph done well.

Nice vid & good comparison with the Honda & Trident. Interesting how the Triumph has pushed the class on in terms of quality & price which has then brought the Honda in to play which was a bit of an outlier before. Kawasaki & Suzuki really need to pull their finger out & Yamaha too to some extent despite the MT07's decent update. Very interesting times for this class.

Agree, for any country outside the US (they seem to use 650's as learner bikes!) 650 odd cc's is sort of perfect these days powerwise for most things except perhaps long distance touring. Suzuki have sat on their laurels with the SV650 for too long and the Kawasaki has never really cut it in this segment. Looking at youtube I think that I would pick the Aprilia 660, then the Trident, then Honda. Change my mind.

@@onecookieboy If I were buying new I would agree with your list,I'd love a demo ride on the Apilia,but I'd rather buy a good low miles 675R & spend the change on holidays when we're eventually allowed to travel.
