I wear suspenders every day to work, under my shirt. They're clip-ons since I wear jeans and work in a casual environment. I find them much better than belts, especially since my job is somewhat physical. I definitely need a pair or two of button ones for more formal occasions though. I never considered the leather matching issue with suspenders either. Great video.

I’ve never seen this channel. I’m not a hipster or dress up, but when I’m working or camping/when I’m binding over a lot. suspenders are what I’ve found to be the best at holding up pants.

I started wearing suspenders with my trousers for about a year ago and I absolutely love them! They are far better than the belt, but to each his own. Excellent video, as always. By the way, suspenders buttons are really easy to sew DIY: you need three sets of two buttons (usually jacket sleeve sized), each of which will be sewn 2.5″ apart from each other on the interior waistband. One pair straddles the center back seam. The other two pairs are on each side of center front: about 3″ (& 5.5″) in from the zipper.

I have always worn suspenders with my tuxedos. I find that I stand taller and that the tuxedo also looks better with suspenders than without. I’m also very impressed with how they look with bow ties and when you put a cummerbund on to cover the waist, they really allow the tuxedo to appear more seamless. About three years ago, I purchased a pair of blue/grey suspenders for my grey tuxedo. The dealer did not have a straight button-on pair, so I had to have my sales guy help me put them on. Ben did put them on and then handed me the clip attachments since I didn’t need them. I’m a full believer in wearing suspenders and I believe that when you wear a tuxedo, they are very necessary for making sure the tuxedo looks like it fits only you. In terms of colors, I think black or white suspenders work best. Black for an overall look and white so they’ll blend into the shirt. Overall, suspenders are a necessary accessory to having suits and tuxedos that look correct in every way so you look great when dressing up in your finest.

I’m 6’3” with a 36” inseam, I’m a power lifter/bodybuilder so I have a larger midsection that fluctuates in size throughout the year. Most of my trousers are a size 35”/36” waist, but I may go down to a 32”-34” in the summer months. That being said, wearing suspenders is a way to be able to wear a slightly large-in-the-waist pair of trousers without the bunching that may be created by a belt. I love to dress sharp on a daily basis, just makes you feel better all around, but I really just hate belts. They put a lot of pressure on the wrong area. I assume that's not very healthy in some way, sort of like how sitting on a thick wallet all day results in some discomfort / minor health issue. Just best to minimize as many of those types of things as you can, while looking damn good in the process!

I have found them superior to belts and been wearing them for about a decade when in a suit or slacks and sp coat/blazer, esp w avoiding when possible wearing of a belt with a suit or tux when possible Was taught they are braces (button type) and the clip on style are what i refer to when i use the term suspenders. May just be terms thing like waist coat vs vest, etc In practice i found the best quality w the polo Ralph Lauren ones that are made in England , great solid brass (nickel silver) hardware and supple leather Trafalgar makes good ones too You can see pop up regularly in thrift stores in very good to almost new to new condition all the time. I buy them for 99 cents to 3 dollars regularly and these two brands sell for close to 100 dollars in dept stores and online Since its a specialty and sort of niche item, you can get them really cheap when they come up on the 2nd hand market Great vid! I wear tuxedos (by choice) and I find suspenders are the missing piece that makes a tuxedo look really great. I tend to hike my suspenders up so they appear to straighten up the tuxedo trousers very nicely. This means that when I stand, I appear taller than I am, my bowtie and cummerbund look really good and the overall picture of me looks like a good model (and for a 60+ gentleman that’s saying something good) that others can’t help but compliment my dress. I try to stick to solids like black and white so that I either match my tuxedo shirts or my tuxedo’s lapels. And the leathers usually match my shoes so it all comes out pretty good. Overall I like suspenders over a belt any day and if I have to wear a tuxedo without them, I don’t feel the tux is complete. Suspenders just add a certain touch of class that truly finishes off a formal look.

Great video. Very informative. Correct me if I'm wrong but suspenders, like belts, should be primarily worn for the look/style and not because they are needed for the pants. Suspenders are better than belts for keeping up your pants, but if that's why they are being worn it likely means the pants are not the right size for the person. Same holds true for belts, or so I think. They are accessories that compliment the outfit but first and foremost is fit.

Not if you wear trousers at the natural waist. That is the point in suiting. Is that the pants dont sit at the hip bones and compress you. Perfectly tailored trousers should fit over the stomach at the natural waist and held up by suspenders. This is even more important for skinny guys. I find it wierd that most British people do not know what the British version of the word suspenders is. Suspenders are the American version of the word. Braces are the British version of the word. Suspenders in britain (short for suspender belt) are used to hold up socks or stockings. The American version of a suspender belt is a garter belt.

Suspender is attached to the pant circumference at 3 points. These three points remains in place all the day long. I think that the remaining circumference of pant may sag and looks untidy. This sag may be due to wallet, keys, mobile in the pockets, in addition to gravity. Please guide how to resolve this issue specially with big belly.

I am a 65 year old man,that likes the way they look,just a fashion now a days,I’ll wear them from time to time,I’ll wear the clip ons as I did when I was 4,5,6 years old,with Levi’s,white t shirt,and with a button down shirt,and I’ll also wear my braces in the same manner,I have one pair of Levi’s,with the buttons on the out side of the band,and I have another pair with the buttons on the inside of the band,and I also wear a belt with them from time to time,that’s just the way I wear them,it feels comfortable and I like,so I do it,don’t know if I’ll go to jail from the fashion POLICE,but I don’t think that I look like that thin guy wearing the skinny trousers and suspenders/trousers,so I wear them,the way they work for me,not anyone else.

Hey! I have a bit of a dilemma. So I’m 15, and 5’5, I LOVE suspenders and 1920-1940s look. I own some asphalt black suspenders, they’re clip on, BUT they have the button feature. There’s a few issues though. First one is, I can’t use the button part because I don’t have any pants with buttons, and my main concern is growing out of them. I have buttons for pants, but only black slacks, and I usually wear the clip on mode with jeans, just because it’s easy. Should I get more dress pants? Should I wait to grow up a bit and get larger before installing buttons?? Idk really, not to mention I wear these almost everyday, with a button up flannel because it’s comfy and I love the look. Idk, please someone try to help me the best you can xD thanks :)

"Replace the belt..." Lol. Somebody hasn't done his research. The suspenders were used for keeping pants up long before belts. In fact, belts weren't even designed to hold up pants, because they can't really grip a man's body. Belts are an accessory, a necklace for your waste. Of course, long ago a belt could be used to carry a purse or sword, and were usually worn without pants at all.
