While not a racing car, the Renault Espace F1 is pretty crazy. It's a large (by European standards) MPV with a Renault F1 engine in it. So you have a minivan with 789 HP, that takes 2.8 seconds to reach 100 km/h. It happened to be on display in the Renault showroom on the Champs-Elysées in Paris when my wife and I visited in 2002.

Junior Johnson's Yellow Banana - Heavily modified '66 Ford Galaxy NASCAR racer, tweaked for aero efficiency. 3. Brabham BT46 "Fan Car" - Vacuum car in the vein of Jim Hall's Chaparral 2J, fan reported by team as needed for engine cooling. 4. 1950 Cadillac Series 61 "Le Monstre" - Cadillac with custom aero body built to compete in Le Mans. 5. Miller Indy Car w/ Front Wheel Drive - Front wheel drive Indy racer which dominated races in 1920s and early 30s due to aero benefit. 6. Cummins Diesel Special (1931) - Diesel powered Indy car. Somewhat underpowered and slower but ran entire 500 mile race without stopping once. 7. Dodge M4S - High speed research car. Could run 194 mph with transverse twin turbo 2.2 liter four cylinder engine, unusual for American cars. 8. Craig Breedlove's Spirit of America (1963) - First application of a jet engine using pure thrust to set a world speed record (after rules change) 9. Thunderbolt speed record car - Two Rolls Royce aircraft engines, three axles and eight tires. Highest recorded speed of 357.50 mph, a world record. 10. Much Enjoyment. I had an old F1 history book, before the 6 wheels were outlawed, Tyrell gave up as the tyre manufacturer couldn't continue developing the smaller wheels at the same rate as the standard ones. Williams tried a double rear axle twice in the early 80's, something like a D evolution of the FW07 and a B evolution of FW08. It was that one which led to the ban, Patrick Head claimed the rule makers decided it would be bedlam in the pit stops!

The craziest thing about the Deltawing is that it started its life as a design render for the then next generation of indycar, losing out to what would be known as the DW12 from memory. Panoz would take the concept and run it open cockpit for a few years in ALMS before the P2 regulations changed and it had to be closed cockpit to comply with the rules. Had it not been for rule changes in the Weathertek sportscar championship around P2s that created the standalone DPi class, it'd still be racing

@@themotorsportstory yeah it seems it the article got it wrong. Giannini never tuned BMW engines and BMW had not made an inline 4 engine for over 15 years by 1955. I reckon the author saw they were both 750cc racers and assumed it must have been a direct development of the Nardi-Danese. But even I got my comment slightly wrong. The Bisiluro used the Giannini G2, not the G1 as I originally said. Main difference is the G2 was a twin cam motor and the G1 wasn't.

The Tyrrell P34 wasn't taken off the track by rule changes. It was stymied by Good Year not wanting to develop the smaller front tyres if there was only one team going to use them, so Tyrrell gave up on the idea after a couple of years. March and Williams experimented with four rear wheels, but they never saw race action. A general tightening up on the rules in the early 1980s limited the number of wheels to four, but this was a while after everyone had given up on the idea. Think I remember reading somewhere that Williams had trouble with the rear rear tyres overheating, due to the front rear tyres blocking the airflow.

A couple of corrections : The Paxton Turbocar used a Pratt & Whitney PT6B helicopter engine, not an ST6 one. The Chaparral 2J never won a race, its best result is a 6th place at Road Atlanta with Vic Elford driving. The Tyrrell P34 was not outlawed, it was just dropped after two years by Tyrrell. The rule limiting F1 cars to four wheels was introduced in 1983, along with the ban on skirts.

Thanks for the comment! From the research I did, I was finding that the ST6 was used in the car which was a variation of the PT6. Could be wrong, but sources are in the description. As for the Chaparral, you're absolutely right. Thanks for the correction, and I've trimmed that part of the video so as not to spread wrong info. As for the Tyrrell I should have clarified this better. The way I phrased it does make it sound as though the Tyrrell caused the rule change which wasn't my intention.

Oh the sound of that Granatelli one. I always love how it sounds and wish more people would do wild things like that. I though t for the longest time it was a turbojet engine for some reason though, not a turboprop, but... 3s throttle lag, hang on, was there something like an aircraft throttle in there so Parnelli would just close or back off the throttle going into a turn and then open it up again? I'm curious now
@themotorsportstory
@themotorsportstory Жыл бұрын
Yeah it's kind of confusing. The engine was based on the Pratt and Whitney PT6 model which has all kinds of variants being used in anything from planes to helicopters, to boats, and even a train (called the UAC TurboTrain). I think a common misconception is that people think the engine produced a jet of thrust that directly propelled the car instead of it driving a 4WD system (apparently a Ferguson type which is pretty well explained here: www.jensenmuseum.org/ferguson-four-wheel-drive-system/) through a torque converter, like on an automatic car. As for the throttle I'm not positive but I believe it was still a pedal that he had to learn to modulate. The car also had a panel on the back that he could deploy as an airbrake. This is just what I've read about it, so if anyone reading this knows even more, feel free to enlighten us🙂

@@themotorsportstory As a but if a sim racing enthusiast, i've played project CARS 2 which has what is essentially the evolution of this car, the Lotus 56, same engine and 4wd system from what it seems. Although rules were changed to reduce the turbine's intake size, they were still able to get pole and run at the front but a fuel pump shaft failure with a few to go caused it to retire from the lead. USAC would then ban Turbines and 4wd. Going back to project CARS, in game if you let off the throttle in the 56, it keeps its rpm pretty much constant from memory which makes me think that IRL the same thing happened as the delay would really only be an issue leaving the pits

5:45 it's also worth mentioning the _reason_ it was outlawed was that all of the other manufacturers complained when it was getting pole position in every single race it entered by "at least" *two* whole seconds, and it was banned on a rules technicality by the other teams' argument that the skids constituted "movable aerodynamic devices," which had previously been banned. This was in a series where it was not uncommon to see cars that were so powerful that not even the manufacturers knew how powerful they were; the Porsche 917/30 is _thought_ to make over 1,600 horsepower, but no dyno at the time was capable of measuring this. Let that sink in -- a car with *less than half* the horsepower was lapping _as little as_ two seconds faster thanks to the fans!

Because if it was superior everyone would have to build one from scratch and that shit ain't cheap. If a car is not unsafe and it is banned, usually it is about cost of development for everyone else, which can sink the WHOLE RACING SERIES.. You will see team withdrawing because they don't have the resources to do it, big names don't want to spend money on something that has no relation to their road cars and so on. And sometimes it is just petty jealousy that gets cars banned, but usually there is another reason that no one bothers to dig up because "they banned it because it was too good" is much better narrative than boring budget constraints and tech development pipelines. Fan cars for ex were not banned really for being too quick but because they spew rocks from the rear end. They have a hoover and an exhaust fan. They literally suck the road clean and throw all the crap behind. 6-wheeler never took off really in the first place, because it was way too costly for tire manufacturers to develop tires for it.

Omg i never thought that until this video they where so many odd race cars like the eagle aircraft flyer special, the 50s red torpedo car, the bmw h2r are the most darling ideas to exist in history my buddy so thank you for the video and have a nice day bye now. P.S Hey The Motorsports Story i got you very cool story on ford back in the 70s nascar where having fighting big time with dodge/plymouth aero cars so blue oval where planning to do same thing by making then 70 torino go fish as in the front end completely changed (b.t.w mercury was also in nascar too with the cyclone spoiler 2 hence the same treatment) on getting competitive edge against mopar but unfortunately had no time in getting it approved+ the officials were going to banned the aero cars after 70 season anyway so with that i got to go see you later bye now.

I think the new Peugeot hypercar is probably the most unconventional car of the 2020’s so far I’d even risk saying it’s unlikely for us to see anything crazier for this decade unless Nissan makes a wingless front engined thing to be the sucessor of the GTR LMP1, but thanks to Alpine LMDh that won’t happen

Still reckon there should be an "unlimited" motor racing series. Other than a 3D "box" of dimensions the car needs to fit within (a generous one, at that) and all the safety gear, builders can go crazy. Petrol, diesel, turbine, electric, steam, DRS, 3 wheels, 8 wheels, crazy aero... anything!

While I agree with you in principle, in practice all that would result of such a ruleset, would be a set of cars that were physically undriveable by any human. With the modern understanding of aerodynamics, it is possible to build a car with so much downforce/grip that it would produce G-forces that would make the driver lose consciousness. Heck, this has already happened - there was a CART race at (IIRC) Texas speedway that was cancelled on the day of the race, because the drivers were complaining of dizziness after running 5 laps of the track, and there were concerns from medical experts that drivers would start passing out during the race purely from the side loading produced by the cars. And that was roughly 20 years ago... TL;DR:- Nice idea, too dangerous to implement.

That deltawing crash was so deliberate. There was no reason for that toyota to dive like that. How much you wanna bet the delta was the victim of some backroom chicanery? Especially with the rules mandating bad aero changes.

Then there was the Volvo 850 wagon entered by TWR in the British Touring Car Championship. It was going quite well, with ongoing development, but a rule change allowing big rear wings made it uncompetitive as with the long, high roofline they couldn't fit a useful wing within the permitted dimensions.

Look up the Deltawing's results at the Road Atlanta, 2012, finishing 5 laps behind the winner ... because experimental cars weren't allowed to unlap themselves under yellow. It would have won if racing under the same rules. I'm surprised the Cummins Diesel wasn't among the 1950s cars. It only raced once at Indianapolis (1952), but blew the doors off everyone in qualifying. It was a front runner for 71 laps until mechanical problems force its retirement.

Awesome video and great choices! even though the '69 Dodge Daytona and '70 Plymouth Superbird didn't "quite" make the list (I did see the honorable mention you put for the Superbird) I would love to maybe see a story on them sometime. even though they weren't the winningest stock cars, (most 1970 race wins were won on short tracks without the nose and wing unfortunately) my grandfather worked for Chrysler at the time and got to work around these cars during the "aero" program. From what I've heard from him and read about it from the NASCAR history sites It's quite an interesting story (from my point of view at least) anyways apologies for the long comment, And again, really well put together video. Thanks for sharing! 👍

the Deltawin concept should have had more backing. It was rather competitive as it was...I wonder how would have performed if they had kept on developing it...
@Db_SpaceFace
@Db_SpaceFace Жыл бұрын
It wasn't ever really competitive. And honestly, it had essentially an open rulebook compared to the competition in it's class which were heavily restricted. The Delta Wing should have been able to beat everybody easily with such free-range to do whatever they wanted while their competition had to buy off-the-shelf cars and make zero modifications/improvements. Instead, they could barely keep up, despite being in continuous development until the day it was reitred.
