Yep, Ed Edd n Eddy was banned in my house as a kid. Sure, a lot was banned, but especially Ed Edd n Eddy. Really sucks, because when I got around to watching it as a teen (by then my parents relaxed), I found out how much I related to it. I actually lived Ed Edd n Eddy. In latchkey I had 2 friends that were essentially Ed and Edd, and I was the Eddy constantly coming up with hair brained money making schemes that utterly failed, and I had my bullies that just liked taking the wind out of my sails, and everything would come crashing down when one of our parents came to pick us up.

I'm glad you brought these specials up. I noticed recently that CN's schedule for Christmas was filled with nothing but TTG. It made me more upset than I expected because, though I am a grown adult that enjoys spending time with their family on the holidays, I remember being a kid. I remember looking forward to seeing these specials that CN would play every year. They would play Ed, Ed, and Eddy, Fosters, PPG, and even older specials like How the Grinch Stole Christmas. As more cartoons came along like KND, those holiday or winter themed specials would be added to the mix. I remember these so fondly because, when I was a kid, my family would spend Christmas day at my great grandma's house. It was a small house (one floor of a two story home) that would be crowded to the brim with family members I barely knew aside from my immediate family and my grandparents. Aside from two German Shepherds to play with, great grandma had no toys, games, or movies to watch. After all the food a kid would want to eat was eaten, the adults would talk for hours, most smoking in the tiny space, no windows open because it was freezing outside. The only thing us kids had to pass the time as we sat on the floor was the TV. It curbed our boredom and distracted us from the cigarette smoke that we had become so desensitized to that we didn't notice we were coughing. These cartoon specials were exactly that, special, and there was so much variety that if a special you didn't like was on all you had to do was wait thirty minutes, and at the least you had something nice to look at during that time. I'm upset by CN's scheduling choice because, even considering how things have changed today, I cannot have been the only one to experience this scenario growing up, and I grantee that there are plenty of kids this year who have to spend Christmas in a place they don't want to. I don't understand why CN chose to leave those kids in the dust this year.

Why? They couldn't of saved it for winter break instead?

IKR? Growing up, I used to love watching all the different holiday specials. Cartoon Network used to play Christmas specials from classic cartoons (the Flintstones, Mr. Magoo, etc.) right alongside contemporary ones. I used to love those!
@curlytop31947 жыл бұрын
Exactly! I get that the might not play the same specials today as they did when I was a kid, but some classics all ages could enjoy would be good choices, and more recent shows like Adventure Time, Regular Show, and Steven Universe have winter and holiday themed episodes even if they don't blatantly state the holiday in them.

CurlyTop Cartoon Network is playing Christmas specials.....on the app! What the fuck? I miss being able to watch Christmas (and Halloween) specials on Cartoon Network. I loved that as a kid and early teen. EDIT: Now as in my last year as teenager (I turn 20 on October 6, 2018), I realize that I got bored of the things I used to love when I was in my mid-teens. I started to rely on KZbin videos and reading articles on Wikipedia to bring me joy. I barely played attention to the TV anymore. Especially Cartoon Network. Now that it has pretty much become the Teen Titans Go! Network, I miss the days Cartoon Network so much. 😢
@curlytop31947 жыл бұрын
It's not even the idea of the old Cartoon Network that I miss. It's the concept of variety. They have no variety any more and it's so depressing considering how many shows CN has played over the years. They have such a huge library of amazing shows with something to appeal to just about anyone and yet they decided to stick to a very narrow demographic this year. It's sad.

The best weird things that ever stuck out to me in _Ed, Edd, and Eddy_ have always been the lengths the Eds/Eddy would go to earn a quarter (building a city out of cardboard boxes, roller-coasters out of scrap metal, things that take more than a quarter's worth of effort to build!), their strangely-colored tongues, and the jawbreakers that are larger than their heads

Here's some stuff that I think that adds a lot to this show. -Tons of sound effects, they seem to try to add one at any given moment that seems justified enough to use one. Best sound effect: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqKVcmB3jtxnmKc -Background music, the instruments are almost constantly playing and also constantly set a clear mood. -Almost every episode they wreck something valuable, like literally half a house. The more sensible people in other shows would usually react to this every time while saying the thing that just happened, here they rarely give any normal reaction to it and when they do care they just straight up try to beat up the one responsible instead of going 'oh no my room/backyard/house, it's destroyed! Why I oughta!' yeah we know we just saw that. This would make it feel bland. If something bad happens to say Jimmy, Eddy would probably just laugh pretty loudly. -Body language, it's a very small thing but you can see them react to each other the whole time, for example when Ed is doing something incredibly weird/stupid/random, be it the main gag of the scene or something in the background to fill up the screen they usually look at him and not constantly with the same pose. When there is no talking their poses change constantly almost rhythmically and seems to be always in combination with instruments in the background (want to call it music but they're just a few notes most of the time), this makes the show a lot more lively because no poses are the same even though this means extra animation work. -Just stuff that keeps happening in the background, together with body language, makes it constantly look lively. Those characters don't care about what the current conversation is about if it doesn't interest them so why not make them do random stuff (usually Ed) or stuff they were already planning to, instead of making them do nothing out of the screen. Again it's extra animation work and they still do it to give a potential extra laugh. Music, animation, sounds, choice of current gag in the scene are always in harmony with each other and I think it's always pleasant to see and listen to whatever is happening. The show is always in an uplifting/comedic mood and keeps you entertained in every scene. Oh boy this is a long comment.

Ed Edd n Eddy is like Butter toast. It looks like the elements won't mix together on paper. But when they come together, they make a nice treat to have. Is it random? Yes. Is it tasty? Yes. Yet it has a charm to it that you wouldn't expect due to it's structure.

Getting into the spirit of a holiday can be a little harder as you get older. Life can get so busy and change so much that you have hard time finding time or energy to get fully invested. Something that I find helps is coming up with new ways to celebrate that are not totally in line with your old traditions, but still create the same sense of nostalgia in some way. Also, you are completely right. By all accounts, Ed Edd'n Eddy should be a show that annoys me to no end, but it's one of my all time favorites and it still holds up to this day (except for the later ones when the animation got a little too spastic for my tastes. I still like them, but not as much as the older ones).
@carlbloke87977 жыл бұрын
Graeme Pischke yeah it could be a bit harder to get in the Christmas cheer as you get older but what always helps for me is looking back at Christmas episodes. Heck Fa la la la Ed is what helps for me to get in the mood thanks to the great Nostalgia it gives for me. And yeah it's funny how Ed Edd n Eddy could've been easily an awful show but it's one of my most favorite cartoons of all time to this very day. Honestly even while Season 5 wasn't exactly as amazing as the first 4 due to the standards the show set it still was pretty good. Also wasn't the animation always spastic?

My mom wouldn't approve of me watching (yet she would never stop me) Courage the Cowardly Dog. She was a huge scaredy cat herself and she didn't like how Eustace or the villains treated Courage, and while I was a very impressionable child, the only episode that ever legitimately got to my nerves was the Curse of King Ramses because of that unexpected god-awful cg. Every other episode I loved, and in fact a lot of that show influenced me to be the person I am today. God bless that no-where family; yes, including Eustace. Perfect example of what kind of person you shouldn't be, but also the perfect example of someone who could really use a good synopsis and some therapy. Because he never got any love out of his relationship with his family as a child, he sought to cherish his love with Muriel, but when she ended up showing more affection towards Courage than to Eustace, he became bitter and started treating him like garbage to make himself feel better. Eustace certainly isn't a role model, but I like that every now and then they have Courage show some sympathy for the old guy.

You know, now that I think about it, Ed Edd N Eddy is the Invader Zim of Cartoon Network. Think about it, both shows are ones that you just can't help but question why everything that happens in them work and how they both get away with being super weird and stupid but in a good way shows. All of the characters in both shows are so likable even though you would think that there would be some that you would genuinely hate, and they always either serve their purpose in both shows, or they that they always provide you with laughs. The humor in both cartoons is always there and it doesn't matter how random they can be at times, because as long as they make you laugh, that's really all what matters. For this kind of stuff, I applaud and thank the creators of both shows for doing these things. Even if a show that is so stupid with so much going on in it, it can still end up being one of you're favorite shows of all time.

I would say my least favorite character was Ed’s sister Sarah. She constantly abused Ed even when he did nothing wrong. I think it was implied that Ed’s parents favor Sarah. There was even a whole episode devoted to Ed having a nightmare about his mom punishing him after Sarah tells on him. Sarah knew that their parents favored her and constantly used that throughout the show by threatening “I’m telling mom.” Sarah basically made Ed her slave by having him do all of her bidding knowing her parents would side with her. The Kankers were really abusive, but abusing your own family and using your parents favoritism to enable that abuse was worse. Ed being usually nice and happy in spite of all that is impressive.
@isobelmiller74646 жыл бұрын
It's a wonder Ed still loves Sarah after it all. You'd think he'd resent her. I mean, you know how when a little kid gets a new baby brother/sister, they often start feeling jealous, because their parents are giving so much attention to the baby, and they think their parents love the new baby more than them? Well, Ed's parents ACTUALLY love Sarah more than Ed, and that's really sad. Sarah's a big fat @#$%&, just like Kyle's mom, in South Park.

Quick pedantic note about the Christmas Carol -- Scrooge isn't seen as a Scrooge because he doesn't let Bob Cratchett have Christmas Day off. He does in fact allow it, but Cratchett actually had to ask first and Scrooge expected him back to work immediately the next day (in Victorian Britain the day after Christmas Day, Boxing Day, is also an important part of the holiday). It's actually Scrooge himself who plans to work on the holiday -- a rather scandalous act given the religious importance of Christmas as a feast day. He also doesn't participate in the general festivity of the season, such as refusing to give to Christmas charities, refusing to have Christmas dinner with his nephew, and is just generally coldhearted, miserly and miserable. In short, Scrooge's very character is devoid of all life, warmth, and common humanity. There. Pedantic objection over.

I think part of why I like Ed Edd and Eddy is that it's a show that really *shouldn't* work, and yet it just *does* and I love it. I can't tell you why, other than it just does.

WeegeeSlayer I don't think it's the slapstick itself, but *how* the slapstick is used. Usually the characters who deserved punishment got it, except on the rare occasion it doesn't happen, in fact those are some of the worst episodes of the show, like the picture day episode where all Eddy was trying to was get a decent school picture, and yet he was punished nonstop the who episode for no real reason. I love this show but it does have a few duds here and there.

I think that it works because, as Enter already said, almost all of the characters feel like kids we grew up with in school or around the neighborhood, having their own strengths/flaws/quirks. The main characters are often trying to scam the neighbors out of their money, but they still have their redeemable qualities and motivations that one can kind sympathic at times. Ed is the big dim-witted “bull in a China shop” trope that can be easily convinced to take part in the scams without thinking and also get lost in his own fantasies, but he is also very innocent-minded, loyal, and willing to make happy friendships (I am surprised Enter did not talk more about how Ed naturally took on the role of Santa Clause and even enjoyed giving away the jawbreakers to make the kids happy). Edd is still very intelligent and can provide a decent moral compass and voice of reason at times, while his main weakness would be peer pressure that makes him go along with those schemes (with is still relatable). Even Eddy does show some redeemable qualities (especially in the final movie), but when he does get too greedy/selfish without learning his lesson, the slapstick comedy is almost always appropriately there to take him down a peg. I also like how certain characters, that are often antagonists like Kevin/Sarah/Kankers have moments that either make them somewhat redeemable/multi-layered, are sometimes understandable (with the Eds pestering them for their money and all), or even make them the targets of slapstick (such as when Kevin and everyone else accidentally get themselves beat up while looking for the Eds, while the Eds are too busy looking for their monkey mask/glove/etc.).

Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays. As a kid, I wasn't much into Halloween since I didn't like candy that much (yeah my parents were confused as well since the only candy I ever ate were Kit-Kats, M&Ms, and Sweet Tarts) and Thanksgiving was just boring since it was just another day of my family yelling at me because I didn't like turkey. Christmas was special to me. Granted, as a kid it was 1000% because I got gifts, but as I got older and especially after I got a job, it became the one day where I would go really far out of my way to make people smile. Only thing I've ever hated about it is the music, but that's mostly because I work retail (and I still hold the opinion that the music isn't bad, but the fact that we only ever play like 3-5 songs and 200 covers of those 3-5 songs gets grating fast).

11:16 Really? I get hating Jimmy and Sarah (the latter, I can barely stand because she seems to attack the Eds almost unprovokedly on more than one occasion, but gets a pass for being one of whom I like to call 'Karmic Boots' to the Eds' collective craniums. Other known bricks include Kevin and the Kanker Sisters.), but maybe it's just because my cultural heritage is just as all-over-the-map, but Rolf's a riot! His bizarre sentence structure, his often changing nicknames for each of his fellow kids, his unique way of living, it leaves me cackling almost every single time. As for Nazz, honestly? I think she breaks a bit of the mold. Sure, she doesn't have too many memorable lines throughout the series, but she's not your typical airhead to put it simply. As seen in episodes like Hands Across Ed and To Sir with Ed that she's got her own interests outside of being a love interest for pretty much every non-girl in the show.
@D_YellowMadness7 жыл бұрын
+ joinmarch76 I usually like Rolf but there are some episodes where he's a colossal asshole for little to no reason or he just punishes the wrong people, seemingly on purpose. The same applies to a lot of the other characters though. + alexandra galici Agreed. I also don't like that she's so much dumber in that movie than in most of the show.
@joinmarch767 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree; given the Eds' history of scamming the kids of the cul-de-sac, I say those such as Rolf, Jonny and Kevin have every right to be skeptical/punishing towards them when they do something wrong. In short, at least karmically, Rolf's usually in the right. The only exceptions to this rule are "If It Smells like an Ed"; which, to be fair, have loads of problems already that Rolf's more a footnote. And that one episode where Double D wanted just one measly shower (I think it was a Season 5 episode, but I forget which), and to be fair, that was what could only be described as a Double D Torture Porn. +alexandra galici Really? I thought their moments were fine. I mean, okay, they weren't my highlights, but it beats Captain Melonhead's romp any day. Hell, he was barely in it, how he figured out where the Eds were goin', I'll never know (and to be honest, I doubt even the characters know how either). Also, I do hate to contradict you, but I must ask, where was Nazz a dunce at all in Big Picture Show? Sure, she understated some issues, such as calling Eddy's Brother "A real jerk" (when to be honest, sociopath sounds more appropriate, don't you?), but if anyone, KEVIN'S being the dunce for missing how Nazz keeps hitting on him! Especially since in past episodes, it's usually the reverse!

I'm really interested in what your opinions are about the Hey Arnold! christmas special where Arnold tries to find Mr. Hyun's daughter and (spoilers) Helga gives up her present to help him, but Arnold never finds out it was her. It was such a touching, emotional moment but it always kind of bugged me that Arnold never realizes it was Helga. Of course that would break the running gag of Helga bullying Arnold but being madly in love with him in secret, but sometimes I wonder if that would have been such a bad thing.

But now i'm 14, and even though i can still enjoy the holidays with my family its not like it once was. I guess it's just something that some people have to deal with while they're growing up until it gets to the point when christmas becomes another day of the year, when it becomes something you don't give much thought to anymore, when it just............... leaves.

Maybe it's because I have a pretty big family, but Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were always two of my favorite days of the year. During childhood, it was because of the presents, but after middle school, it became more about spending time with family members I haven't seen in over a year. The only family members that live near me is one uncle and his wife, daughter, and son, and a grandmother, the other 20+ spread out across the U.S. Unfortunately, it seems this Christmas will be a more lonely one, with most of them going off doing their own thing after my grandmother's passing earlier this year. It just feels empty without them.

I love both "Fa la la la a Ed" and "Jingle jingle jangle". Fa la la la Ed does give off those warm fuzzies that you would usually feel around Christmas but it's more engaging because it's on a regular day; you do something good, it'll feel like Christmas all the time. Jingle jingle jangle is very charming in it's own right. I found it amusing in a sense. But that's not why I love the special. I love it because it shows a side of Eddy that wasn't shown too often up until the tv movie series finale. After being kicked out for being a total butt and trying to scam off with a present, Eddy is all by himself in the cold. He sees the tree and replaces a bulb so the whole tree lights up. Now, it doesn't seem all that big of a deal to Eddy or quite possibly the audience. It's one of the very few selfless things he has done in the series. Now Eddy ending up not learning his lesson is a relapse of his habits, which is normal... though it definitely kills the mood. There's a reason for that. 2 actually. 1. The creators can be out there and it's likely that they didn't want it to be sappy or predictable like most Christmas specials can be. 2. The series finale. Eddy didn't completely change or show his real self until the film. The creators wanted Eddy to finally learn his lesson for everything he has done in the finale, ending the series at a very sweet but not super sappy note. I think if you watch the finale and watch jingle jangle, you might understand why the special ended the way it did. I won't lie, I was rather bummed that Eddy didn't learn anything when I first saw the special. But dear God I was essatic when I saw that in the finale. I love both of these Christmas themed episodes. I love the series.

I think how celebrated each Holiday feels and how much spirit and participation you see all really depends on where you live and your family. My family celebrates thew holidays together and there were a ton of trick-or-treaters this year. Where I live is in a generally cold area so we do tend to get a white christmas. Not all the time (oftentimes the snow will come before or after christmas and be gone, or mostly gone by the time christmas comes).
