Fun Fact: Ren's voice actually IS the original voice actor. John Kricfalusi, the series creator, was the original voice of Ren. He was replaced in the 3rd season after he was fired from Nickelodeon. He was replaced by Billy West, Stimpy's voice actor, from that season until it's original cancellation after season 5. John Kricfalusi then took back the role of Ren for APC, but Billy West refused to return, because he hated the direction Adult Party Cartoon was going to go. So he was replaced by Eric Bauza. I looked this stuff up after I originally watched this review on Vimeo.

Story Time: When I was a little kid, me and my mom used to watch a lot if cartoons on Saturdays. We'd always watch shows like Kim Possible, Emperors New School, and The Buzz with Maggie. Well, one day, I decided to wake up early to catch some cartoons and began channel surfing. I stopped on Spike TV and saw the opening to the Ren and Stimpy Show. My mom came out and was like "Oh hey! It's Ren and Stimpy! I haven't seen that show forever!" Apparently, unknown to us, Spike was deciding to show the Adult Party cartoons early in the morning. I think the episode had something to do with Ren and Stimpy getting lost in a vagina or something gross like that. We just looked at each other and shook our heads.

If they were aiming for black comedy, they didn't do a very good job. I'd say (usually) Happy Tree Friends is a good way to do dark comedy. They know how far they should go, and most of the deaths/injuries are just so ridiculously unrealistic that it comes off as hilarious. Rick Potion #9 disturbed me more than any other Rick and Morty episode. It has got to be the worst no matter how much other people defend it. The rest of the series is just tame compared to this, even the worst of them. Not even Auto Erotic Assimilation got this dark. Only Rick Potion #9 comes close to being as disturbing as Ren Seeks Help.They are both barely any better at being a serious horror story than they are at comedy, and they both made the anti-hero into into a seriously evil villain who isn't funny. This is probably super old news, and no one probably cares at this point but fuck it i'm gonna say it anyway. There was an unreleased episode of APC called "Life Sucks". The episode is mostly about Ren destroying Stimpy's joyful innocence with harsh reality, and from what I heard, Life Sucks was supposed to be the prequel to Ren Seeks Help. It seems to make sense, especially on the basis that the ending of that episode (the animatic with audio can be found on KZbin) ended with Stimpy sobbing, and that the episode did have Ren say some pretty horrible things.

Ren seeks help, was honestly one of the worst things I've ever watched- all of APC was. But on the same note, I'll also say that Ren seeks help was one of the "better" episodes, and not better because it was great, but because it was the most watchable. All of the elements of grossout, and brutal scenes of abuse actually work in the episodes favor. This episode does have some "shining" moments, and some actual comedic scenes, but it overall fell flat. I hate this episode and series most, because of how it completely bastardizes Ren's character. Rens nothing more than a useless psychopath, with absolutely no redeeming qualities. At least in the original, Ren was shown to be smart, have weird hobbies/interest, loved to read, tried to be classy, and had some ambitions. Ren in the original was never this fucked up. He may have been an unstable, mean-spirited Ren, but he also had the balance of being a vulnerable, emotionally sensitive, jerk with a heart of gold. Even when he hit Stimpy, there was always a reason behind it. He never just abused Stimpy for the sake of, and only did it when Stimpy fucked up, or said or did something stupid. Stimpy was reduced to nothing more than a overly flamboyant gay stereotype, who like Ren; is largely useless. They're both useless in this series.There's no balance between the two characters either. In the old original series, they both had a bond, and were companions. Their bond could take on whatever role interpretation that whatever writer chose for that particular episode. They were friends, best buds; who needed each other, and couldn't be without each other. They were supposed to be a parody of the three stooges, along with Looney Toons, and a bit of Hanna Barbera sprinkled throughout. What John missed the point of the most, is purpose and motivation with the entirety of this series. Neither of their characters have have any real purpose, or motivation behind their actions. It doesn't help much John has a huge disdain for writers, either. Also, while Richard Purhsel wrote this episode, John is the one who added all of the darker, and more fucked up elements. Richard tried to persuade John not to add those elements, to no avail.

Theres a difference between disturbing and dark comedy. Dark comedy is stuff like the Addams Family, Courage The Cowardly Dog, and some of the earlier episodes of family guy. Also on a technical level, the whole 'walk of shame' scene is incredibly cheap and lazy. It's basically just a few painted backgrounds being slid from left to right, and a looping walk cycle for Ren. That's not an impressive bit of animation, walk cycles are literally the second thing you learn in an animation course at college, right after making a ball bounce!

Here's the alternate ending to this episode: After Dr. Mr. Horse punches Ren during the anger argument over Ren’s dark past, Ren stops Mr. Horse and admits that he’s crazy and also tells him that the horse is crazy too, once he punches the dog’s face, which Mr. Horse admits too. So Ren asks Mr. Horse about the cure of his psycho behavior, even in front of Stimpy. Mr. Horse then tells Ren the only cure for him is calmness and sympathy, which Ren agrees as he rushes to the yoga training gym and back home to apologize to Stimpy for his abusive action to him. Stimpy then accepts Ren’s apology and the duo starts to make up by going to an ice cream parlor, before they do, though, Ren’s frog, still injured, pleases Ren to take one last kill by him, but Ren tells his frog that killing is not the answer to his problems, since there’s one that is better than abuse, which is sympathy and compassion. The cartoon ends where Ren, Stimpy and the frog have ice cream together.

UGH, and to think THIS was the one that introduced me to Ren and Stimpy. when i was a preteen, i stumbled upon this episode at a friends house (my family didnt have cable yet). as an impressionable youth, i hungered for edgy entertainment, and i thought this was the definition of high class comedy. I agree. Mr. Pickles really has no point or explanation whereas we get one in this episode. And it shows how absurd Ren is since he gets spanked once and becomes evil. As for what Stimpy did to ren, this was meant to be a sequel to life sucks (look it up) so Stimpy might've gotten so upset from the stuff Ren said that Ren realized the error.
