And when someone else of your caliber comes along, they’ll replace _you_ in that role. And that’s your career now, whether you want to be defined this way or not.” A person’s reputation =\= a bestowable mantle. Dark Shadows did it in the late 60’s when Count Petofi mindswapped Jameson Collins to the future with David Collins (both played by David Hennesy), with David recognising Barnabas (who had used the i Ching to astral project into his past self) causing some trouble for the vampire. It's not really body swapping as much as it's exchanging physical locations, in the 90's reboot series when a séance sends Vicki to 1795 her location in the present is filled by governess Phyllis Wick, and the present day characters keeping her alive is a minor subplot.

Wasn't Quantum Leap more like possession than body swapping though? I think body swapping doesn't work with time travel because anything the person in the past does would instantly cancel out whatever the other person is doing at that moment so it's a pointless concept for a story. Unless it's multiverse theory but that's even more pointless because neither of them will effect the other so the time travel may as well not be involved.

Ok so, the danganronpa twist isn't that the characters are fictional, it's that the characters living in v3 aren't living in the same world as the ones from the previous 3 games and anime, they live in a world were the previous stories are games and anime like in ours, a game within a game, the other characters are as fictional to them as they are to us, imagine if you found out your teacher, your parents, everyone you went to school with never existed because they are characters in a game and that your whole personality is manufactured and are a living as a character, I'm not the biggest fan of the ending but it's not as simple as you made it out to be

We see at the end that Mitsuha approaches her dad, as herself this time, and before the scene cuts we see that she’s got a determined air about her and he’s a bit shocked. The implication is that she picked up where Taki left off and was able to convince him to commit to the evacuation.

They remember it as though it’s a dream, and in dreams certain details don’t jump out or make an impression. Some things do, like Taki recreating Itomori on paper from memory, but others just don’t stick or register. The rural and urban split helps to facilitate this, as Mitsuha isn’t familiar with up to date technology first hand (she gets something akin to culture shock when having a foodgasm) and its easy to assume Taki thinks her phone is an older model since Itomori doesn’t even have businesses open after dark. Things like dates not adding up get dismissed as a dream since it’s not until late in the movie both realise it’s real (Mitsuha seeing 2013 Taki in Tokyo and Taki seeing Mitsuha on a list of casualties).

The time travel is explained, it's has to do with the shinto religion, and with Mitsuha's grandmother's explanation of how fate, time, and bonds all have connections, Mitsuha is a priestess, her family has always had strong spiritual awareness with the body-swapping running in their family as well. Just like the shinto kami would later erase the evidence and memories of Taki and Mitsuha switching, the kami were the ones who allowed Mitsuha and Taki to switch places in the first place.

@@thattaht It is both, the body swapping is something that everyone in her family goes through, but hers was a special case that required extra sacrifice to the Kami. The ribbon that Mitsuha gives Taki is one that she made with her grandmother in a ritual about the bonds between people, time, kami, and fate. The ritual for that ribbon, plus the ritual for the sake, and the erasure of their memories and evidence of switching bodies was the price the kami demanded to give them a chance to save each other. Taki does remember other things, he remembers Mitsuha's sister, mother, father and friends, he remembered the shrine and the rituals, he eventually does remember her name when he is looking at the names of people who died in the comet collision, and he remembered the general area and that it was a rural town.

@@skirdus367 There are a lot of reasons why they didn't address the time travel earlier. It's never even stated that they don't notice, they could have noticed but never were able to get a message to the other that they were going back and forth through time. You remember that when Taki tried to show his friends the notes Mitsuha left on his phone, they all disappeared in front of him? Things like that could have happened but they decided not to include it in the film because it would take away the punch at the climax. Or it could have been something that they didn't want to tell each other but then wound up forgetting when they woke up because you don't have such precise memory in your dreams. And I bring it up in another comment, there are tons of people, mr enter being one of them himself, even on rewatching the film and know that they can look for evidence of the dates, still manage to miss it because everything else is taking up so much attention.

I have gotten absolutely sick of seeing people put down anyone who says anything about whatever show or movie because of how widely-loved it is, and I can't express how satisfying it was to see someone FINALLY take a stand against that. I love you Mr.Enter here's why your opening is problematic though as someone who just thinks the movie is fine. I'm in school for game design and we have to learn a lot about critique. it's one thing to say you didn't like something versus calling it an atrocity. Your opinion means its not your cup of tea but by giving it a blanket term of 'atrocious' while reviewing you're no longer presenting it as your opinion. It's fine not to like the movie but knowing your angle on most of these videos it's more than just you stating an opinion but rather reviewing the work as a whole with your opinion sprinkled in. That's why the Korra review rubbed me the wrong way too. I subbed for years because I loved hearing you go through things and I loved the way you analyzed things but now it's starting to feel like your opinions are equating to if something is good or bad rather than providing an actual in-depth review of universally panned shows. Again, not a massive fan of this movie either but it's just a bit disappointing to see a well beloved movie be reviewed next to the likes of shark tale or rapsody street kids

It’s stated in the film they experience it as though it’s a dream, and don’t find proof it’s real until late in the story. When they do try seek each other out and Mitsuha doesn’t get recognised by Taki (he could plausibly have not noticed her too closely in the crowd) that it’s too late to communicate a time difference, and he only finds tangible proof of her as listed on a casualty report. They both switch into unfamiliar and very different places that have only base reference points for, rural Itomori (which doesn’t even have businesses open after dark and the only dedicated cafe is a vending machine) and urban Tokyo. It’s not like they’re comparing notes on current events on a regional scale, but rather specific instances of their own lives.

Given there seems to be some divine power behind it, it’s possible this is to prevent the people being swapped from overthinking it and instead build a bond. Weathering with You does have themes of divine intentions and defying fate, so the idea of two people fighting against time to be together isn’t inconceivable. @@bbumbs747 It’s a recurring theme in portal fantasy stories (one person transported to another place unfamiliar to them) for the transported character to treat it as a dream or believe it follows the rules of the world they’re used to until something big enough shakes them out of it and makes them realise this is what constitutes reality for them. Add in that here there’s an unknown force in play making the swap happen, easier to see why the first thing they do isn’t looking up something familiar like Itomori or their own identity. Perhaps part of the swap includes conditioning not to worry or think too hard about their own persona while swapped. A recurring Doctor Who example is when people first enter the TARDIS. “Oh, it’s just a box” or “it’s done with mirrors I’ll bet”, then the truth hits them when they emerge somewhere that isn’t where they got on board.

@@AlphaOmega1237 Short summary to mistakes he makes in case you are a bit curious, i can elaborate more on specific points :misunderstanding the twist of danganronpa v3, misunderstanding the time traveling and the bootstrap paradox, complaining that a character doesn't have traits specific to an architect while complaining that he has very good visual memory of buildings and skyline, forgeting that the phones changed acording to a characters memory so the dates don't matter and they don't have to swap on the same date only 3 years apart, forgetting that dates and numbers are the most hard things to remember while dreaming, misunderstanding the reason they swap bodies isn't the fact that they met in the train, nor is it the comet, complaining that a teenage boy touches his boobs after being turned into a girl despite not being a pervert in his normal life, and a lot of other complaints about how the characters act that don't make sense There is also a bit more foreshadowing like the fact that everytime someone says something about the shooting star he goes what are you talking about, even when he watches the news, the fact that he has her hair bandana on his arm the whole time and that he vaguely remembers meeting her in a train before despite the fact she hasn't been to the city . he also ignores that he only remembers the village after seeing a photo of it in an exposition while on a date, before that he forgot it completely. people are also mentioning Shintoism is important in the film but i don't know much about it

@@mrminecraftcubeable Overall I do think that most of his evidence is a bit weak, but I also think that the movie's reliance on the dream-like aspect and the time travel/manipulation were poorly handled. I feel like a lot of people saw the title, gave you a thumbs down, and then left, without even listening to what you had to say (and you said a lot of good things about the movie). This situation happened to me recently with the cartoon "The Hollow". I absolutely loved the first season, I've re-watched it several times, and then I was all in for the second, because people told me it was great. I watched it and..... I didn't like it. There were very little things I liked, and they were far apart from each other. One of them was seeing one of the characters saying that he's gay, and the others being like "oh.... that explains why you didn't like the girl!" and moving on. I liked how casual it was and how all the characters just accepted it as a fact, and didn't dwelve too much into it; however, that's way too small for me to like an entire season. But alas, some people seem to be entitled to their opinion, and if you go against it, you're in the wrong because you're "jeopardizing" something they like and will defend it with claws and teeth.

I like Your Name well enough, though that's probably because of the animation since I'm a sucker for gorgeous animation. But I find it to be very confusing and I can't feel for whatever Taki and Mitsuha have going on. It's not to say that the writing is bad. I think it's decent enough. It's just that the flaws take away from what could've been a masterpiece. You're not forcing your opinions onto people and I agree with a lot of your points. As someone who has seen this movie 13 times to date (my 2nd favorite of all time behind Weathering With You), I have a few counterpoints. Q) Why does Taki forget more and more about Mitsuha after they stop switching A) The bow in Mitsuha's hair. The "Red String of Fate" is a popular symbol in japan which represents an invisible link between two people destined for each other, only this movie it's physically represented in the form of Mitsuha's bow. After Mitsuha gives it to Taki, he wears it every day as a good luck charm so he always has that connection. When Mitsuha ties it in her hair as they start switching, that is essentially the connection on her end. The problem is because Taki has no idea that Mitsuha puts the bow in her hair, much less how to do it himself, he doesn't wear it. So, when Mitsuha does her own hair, it allows the two to switch that night, vice versa. And when Mitsuha dies in her timeline, that severs the connection almost entirely because she isn't alive to wear the bow at all. Q) Why do Taki and Mitsuha switch bodies at all? A) Apart from the aforementioned metaphor, the braids that Mitsuha's family makes are tied to Musubi, who Mitsuha's grandmother explicitly describes as the local guardian deity and a god of unions; unions being further explained as tying strings together, the flow of time, connecting with people, etc. It wasnt just Mitsuha who had these body swaps either, it's been a trend of the women of the family for as long as its documented, just that the memories eventually faded into obscurity over time, much like it does for Taki and Mitsuha by the end. Knowing this, one can infer that this guardian deity was putting together a safety net for the Miyamizu family or Itamori as a whole. The crater atop the mountain and Itamori's lake proves that this is a pattern for the comet, and Musubi was getting ready to save the people there. Taki was connected with her in the future because no one at her current time would have been able to warn her about a disaster that had not yet happened and no one could predict. Q) Why did Mitsuha set Taki up on a date with Miss Okudera? A) Mitsuha didn't plan on Taki getting to go on that date; she wanted to get out and experience Tokyo for herself and that was just an excuse to do so. When it doesn't turn out that way, Taki gets to spend time with his crush, but ultimately doesn't feel comfortable with it even if he tries to convince himself that he is. At this point, Taki's effectively lived a life with Mitsuha and all her bullshit for a decent while now, and just has a stronger connection to her than this woman he's only admired from afar. Q) The Sake. Just the Sake A) Going back to Musubi, Mitsuha's grandma also states that "Whether it's water, rice, or sake, when something becomes a part of a person, it's a union; it joins their soul." This isn't just a metaphor for Taki and Mitsuha swapping bodies and having a connection (which is why they have that thin connection all those years later), but it also describes how the Kuchikame Sake is made. Mitsuha puts the rice in her mouth, so it joins her, chews it up and spits it out, expelling the liquid and a bit of herself with it because she had taken the rice into herself already. So when Taki drinks the Sake, which has another red braid tied around it, he gets his last chance and last connection with Mitsuha so he can properly warn her. I have others but this has gone on long enough but I will agree with a few things. Not noticing the date is a big hole, and the characters are noticeably weak (Something that WWY definitely fixed), but that second bit never really mattered to me, even as someone who prioritizes characters in these things. I think keeping the characters and emotion simple is part of what makes this movie work for me. We already have the grand, intricate plotline and a looming threat of death literally over head set a tone that says "Even when the world comes crashing down on you and despair begins to set in, it's these simple feelings and pleasures that we can hold onto to give us the inspiration to not give up." That's why Taki writes "I love you" on Mitsuha's hand; because it's not important what his name is, just that she has someone out there that loves her and wants her to live on. It may be cheesy but that cheesy purity is exactly what this otherwise grim and depressing story needed. I do absolutely love this movie, and I would love to discuss it in further detail if you want, and I'll accept your opinion either way.

@@daejynn7298 Have you seen Garden of Words or Children Who Chase Lost Voices? I think you might love those ones as well. The emotional purity and humanity in them is another point that you can see in the other films he made. There are two things I disagree with you on. The whole dates being different thing isn't necessarily a plot hole. There are a lot of ways that making note of the differences in date would have just not changed anything except take away the impact later in the movie; and also Shinkai kind of dangles it in front of us in different points in the movie. Sometimes it shows the dates on the phone or on calendars in the background, and many people miss them even on rewatches, so it's kind of like if you miss it even when you should know what to look for, it's reasonable they wouldn't have realized in the moment when there was so much else going on. And as for the characters, I thought they were plenty strong in this movie, Mitsuha and Taki especially. They left a big impression on me and I wanted to see more of them, and I feel like I got a good sense of their personalities.

No, Taki was not too scared to talk to girls in his own life, the only girl that he had any interest in was his manager, and being scared was not the reason he doesn't hit on her. That same manager even comments on how he is quick to start fights when he doesn't have the strength to back it up, and you see him being more open and brash and less polite with his friends than when Mitsuha is in his body. A lot of these complaints about the time travel is super nitpicky and overthinking it. It's fantasy not sci-fi. I could go deeper, like the ridiculous part where you're asking if he's going into an alternate universe, but if I could offer you advice I'd just say you're overthinking it too much. It's magic. They don't need to explain how the magic works. I definitely concur that the characters are underdeveloped. I think they're supposed to be generic archetypes to allow more people to connect with them (which isn't a good thing) - I don't agree that the side characters aren't memorable or that the gangsta you mentioned is more memorable then them. I didn't even know who you were talking about and the scene was literally playing on the screen. You had to mention the tooth pick thing and the context before I knew you were talking about that guy specifically too. That could be a personal thing though. However, where you kind of really fall flat (aside from the time travel bullshit) is your criticism of the climax being confusing. It falls back on the magic thing but also on a lack of understanding of Japanese folklore - you talk about Spirited Away a few breaths beforehand and while it definitely presents Japanese folklore in a more engaging way it does as good of a job of actually explaining events as Your Name does. Yeah, to you and I the thing on the mountain at twilight thing doesn't make sense, but from what I know, twilight in Japan is when the world and the spirit world is closest, allowing spirits to crossover and magical things to occur (correct me if I'm wrong). In a movie centred around a magical connection between two people, it makes sense they'd be able to meet in such a way within the context of Japan. It's not explained in the plot but implied; like how in Spirited Away Sen's parents suddenly become famished and literally turn into pigs. Why do they do that? Because it's twilight when the plot happens and Sen needs to have something that sets up the climax of the movie. Why do they meet on a mountain top? Because that's what the entire movie has been building up to. So what's the issue? Narratively it makes sense and is a good payoff, and culturally it suits. Really feels like you didn't like it because you didn't understand it and not because it did anything wrong. Same with the time travel. I don't know. This feels like a really ranty kind of review, not really thought out or considered.

@@amedotuniverse652 I think their point is that the body swap and time travel being connected and the mechanics of said time travel both make more sense when considering Japanese cultural references. Now, you're free to disagree, and you'd also probably be right in assuming many people who love this film don't know the cultural references and are just suspending disbelief an odd amount because of pretty animation. For me personally, though, as someone who dives into the culture that inspires anime, I think that understanding it makes a lot of the problems brought up in the review either non-issues or easily within the standard parameters of my suspension of disbelief. Mr. Enter is not into watching and reviewing anime, so I'm betting some or all of these things weren't even considered when making this review. But again, you do you if you dislike the movie.
