Re: Jen losing her magic. It’s been made a point a couple times that she doesn’t know how she was bound without magic. Then in this episode, Lilia describes Jen as the High Priestess, who has “immense spiritual power, unable or unwilling to” use their magic. Perhaps Jen was traumatized and “bound” herself, and never actually truly lost her magic.
@apersonwhomayormaynotexist986825 күн бұрын
That would also make sense with the wizard of oz theme that was going on with the wicked witch and good witch costumes for agatha and lilia. A magical journey through an unfamiliar land only to find out that you had what you were looking for all along
@kks236025 күн бұрын
As soon as I saw that Jen’s traumatic event in the Water Trial was a white male dr in old timey garb, and then she mentioned the part about him not using magic, I realized she had bound herself. It parallels what happens in the real world when people in power take from less powerful people, be it physically, emotionally, spiritually; you either become a victim “bound” in your powerlessness or you become a survivor, and many times, more powerful than before. In both cases, the power to bind or to empower comes from the story, the narrative we are telling ourselves. It’s something that always comes from within. People can help, or not help us on our “path”, but the outcome is always determined by ourselves.
@cxbees25 күн бұрын
@@kks2360 yes !! I was a lil hesitant to hope that Jen was gonna be fleshed out further than just sorta gesturing at her being a survivor, but the whole "path ahead" and "unable or unwilling" thing (and also how goddamn well this episode handled talking about women aging) has me actually quite hopeful that this has been an intentional meditation on survivors of violence. it's really just... so lovely to see a show celebrating Jen's rage and survival. even tho they're killing people left and right, it seems clear at this point that her arc is going to be about there still being a vast and worthwhile life for her on the other side of an immensely traumatic event.
@Blast222425 күн бұрын
This would make sense as Jen was portrayed as "The Evil Queen" from Snow White. But NOT in her beautiful form, but the crone she turned herself INTO in order to appeal to Snow White. As Myrtle Snow from AHS would say, "You've forsaken your destiny..."

The franchise movies and shows about random side characters that not a lot of people really care about are always the best ones, I've been saying this for years. It's just like you said, if they're making a show about the twist villain from WandaVision, there must be an actual story they want to tell, because it's obviously not a cash grab. And because they don't have a big brand to protect, they're able to be more risky and experimental. Nobody who wasn't already a big Marvel fan had heard of the Guardians of the Galaxy before 2014. The best Star Wars thing in YEARS was a Disney+ show about a side character from a side movie who's already dead. I'm so glad Disney is willing to go in this direction.

She was always a powerful seer but she refused to use her powers for most of her life because everyone has the same sad ultimate fortune and she couldn't change it. All seers are like Casandra if they cannot change the future. It wouldn't matter if Casandra was believed if it still wouldn't change anything. As she said, she *chose* to not be in a coven (or have other close relationships) and to be a fraud (a phony fortune teller) because of her inability to save her coven. It was all about never seeing that someone would die -- until she unwittingky saw that Billy would die in only hours. By helping (?) Billy with the sigil she did something else-- she immediately wiped out her own memory of fortelling his death. Being unstuck in time like Billy Pilgrim may be an occupational hazzard of seers that can be suppressed by not using her reel powers of divination but her powers are not just knowing her own biography. (Agatha "hitting the deck" is both after Lilias demise and, importantly, a coherent attempt to change the future. The person unstuck in time knows they can change nothing but a seer sometimes can.)

Remember, Nando, Agatha All Along is the second installment in a trilogy of shows. VisionQuest is forthcoming and it's very possible the rumored Scarlet Witch movie may be what all this comes down to. Hell, Midnight Suns may also be related. Keep your eyes open.

I just finished the show, I'm late I know. Anyways, as a witchcraft practioner, this episodes was beautliful. How lillia's actress acted by explaining the cards, the humour about the sword(s) falling. and the phrase "I loved being a witch," was so beautifully delevered. This show had such beautiful elements about modern witchcraft. MCU really pulled something else with this show and I'm here for it.

Nando I always love your takes! But I think I can provide a different perspective around the witch costumes; Agatha is wearing a colligate outfit/blazer so her WWW is Elphaba and she was horrifically misunderstood and chose to be the "villain" . Teens skin isn't teal here so he's an homage to Angelina's Maleficent that's where the cheekbones comment comes into play, in that movie she was portrayed as a villain but she was a good soul who trusted the wrong people. And Lilia as Glenda makes so much sense since she was the only selfless one in the coven ( even know she didn't know it) she gave everything she had to give the rest of the coven a chance to live, she gave Agatha courage, teen brains ( by giving him his book back) and She gave Jen a heart, Lilia's honesty with Jen made Jen change how she views the group, every other trial Jen was always out first to the next trial and only concerned with her safety, this time she said she was not going to go through the door before Lilia. Jen's was the least complicated, the evil witch relentlessly chased beauty and died in her witch form that she detested so much. I see people comparing her to Once Upon A Times Evil Queen regina but as a regina fan I can tell you she never walked around in this form ever lol. Long long story short there is a lot of story telling through the costumes for the overly observant crowd.

I was not excited for Agatha when it was announced. Like at all. I wasn't hoping for it to fail, but I wasn't even sure if I was going to watch it. But I went in with an open mind, the first two episodes I felt just kind of meh on, but this episode was genuinely so excellent I messaged a friend "you need to watch Agatha". I'm glad I went in open minded on this show because it went from my "ugh fine I'll watch it" to so far my favorite D+ era show.

Your thumbnail being a huge Patti Lupone warms my gay theater kid heart 😭. Now pop culture is FINALLY getting why theater is amazing. Whatever school play yo’ all growing up is as representative of actual theater as the quality of music high school bands and filmmakers create. I hope this means the general public will be even more receptive and loving to Broadway!!
@sisterseeth24 күн бұрын
So true...very few realize how much is ripped off of Broadway, and then blandly portrayed in film....and then, everyone fans out for such a cheap imitation. The same is true for the music underground, and how it hits the mainstream in such a manufactured way...but to those that have no idea what exists in the underground music scenes, the pale imitation is their version of modern edginess.

@davescrams25 күн бұрын
I agree. There are at least 3 that could have escaped if they were able to transform: the crow, the owl, and the cicada. I believe Vertigo (the cicada) is the only one who gets a proper name rather than being credited as their animal form. And I think Okwui Okpokwasili (Vertigo) is the only Salem Seven actor who gets one of the coveted spots in the episode end credits. If anyone made it out, I would assume it includes her.

An absolute fantastic episode from all angles (writing/production/editing/acting/costume/makeup). Also, I have a fun little detail I noticed that I haven't seen a single breakdown channel notice. It's not of any import, but it's a deep Easter egg that unless you're super into live music in iconic venues, you'd never notice even though it is mentioned in a previous episode. The tarot card meant to represent Alice has a large, odd shaped rock behind the character. This rock is shaped/colored exactly like the iconic rock formation at the Red Rocks music venue. This is the venue mentioned in the first trial when Alice tells Billy that her mom had her tattoo with the protection symbol when she was 13. It's a cool reference and I feel like the only person who has seen it other than the creator of the prop.

It's really interesting that each of the witches of the coven either killed somebody else or they died. Jen indirectly killed Mrs. Davies/Hart. Agatha killed Alice. Billy at the end took a body to save his brother - and in a way if anyone died on the road it was kinda his fault anyway. The only ones who didn't kill - Alice and Lilia. Lilia basically chose her fate, too.
