Hey I get the same feeling with Kendrick Lamar, I’m still trying so hard to find that spark that gets me into his music, I respect him and his music and I can see why people love him a lot but I still haven’t been able to get into him the way that I got into Gorillaz, even tho this album didn’t hit me immediately it definitely grew on me to be my favorite album probably ever, but I guess sometimes you can’t really connect with an artists music as much as you try to and you gotta respect the possibility that it’s just not for you.

This review means a lot to me, when I was in high school I loved gorillaz, but I didn't know how I felt about this album when it came out. it was just so different than anything that I would have listened to back then. I wanted to hear someone's opinion on the album and that's how I found TheNeedleDrop. It's crazy that that was a decade ago. Thanks for all the hard work Anthony.

similar thing happened to me. in about 7th grade i listened to plastic beach, and i wanted to hear a different opinion, like you. after listening to fantano’s review, i checked out his other reviews and discovered a whole bunch of classic and diverse albums that shaped my understanding of music through middle school and high school. his passion for music was honestly inspiring; he made listening to music cool. I wonder what my life would be like if I never found fantano’s plastic beach review, I owe a lot to it.

@orangedalmatian
@orangedalmatian 3 жыл бұрын
as far as classics go this album is very young. Generally an album has to be at least a generation old (20-ish years) before it can be considered classic, as that's usually enough time for people to retrospectively see how much it has influenced and inspired artists that followed and whether it's retained much relevancy after originally seeping into the cultural consciousness. Not to say an album HAS to be popular and influential to be a masterpiece, but the term classic just has different connotations. This album, along with other rare exceptions (the first one to jump to my mind is something like TPAB or In The Aeroplane or MBDTF) have the uncanny ability to very rapidly cause a shift and stick around past the point of average trends. Not a literal 'Instant Classic' but yeah.

As much of a good album it is, I think calling it a concept album "..so far ahead of its time." is too much of a praise honestly. The album itself never revolved upon the established story or having a central narrative of its own, just a loose concept with interrelated themes in each song not unlike plenty other albums, such as Radiohead's OK Computer and Kid A for example. It's barely going on the same scope as The Who's Tommy and Quadrophenia, or even Pink Floyd's "mother of concept album" The Wall (though can't deny they still put a tremendous efforts on the plotline and the animation) Nevertheless, it still not detracting it from being an amazing album😃 Edit: word choice error.

"On Empire Ants, in just under five minutes, Gorillaz create an immersive symphony. The first movement is one of ice; of ghostly keyboards that brush feather light atop a glistening, tonal space of bright ambience. "The polyphonic prairies here, it's all around you," sings Albarn, his voice floating high above the flawless sheen of glass-like stillness. Suddenly, a shift, a second movement appears far in the distance, a descending line of pointed synth begins to emerge, flying closer as each second passes. The stillness subsides and it becomes our sole point of focus, becoming more earnest with each refrain. Like a wave, the beat crashes overall, bathing the world in warm, dulcet energy, all while Little Dragon soothe the change in pace with words not meant to be fully understood. In short, this is electro as high art." Read this in a Gorillaz ranking article and thought it was worth sharing.

honestly i'm surprised you gave it a strong 9 considering the criticisms. i think i like it even more though. glitter freeze fits perfectly, in my opinion. it has such a dark and gritty atmosphere around it. it feels like i'm traversing the ocean in a cold war submarine trying not to die. and the few vocals we do get are so effective, especially that insane laugh about halfway through.

I like Glitter Freeze because I love rough, loud, off-kilter tangents like that on albums in general. They add an air of peculiarity and catharsis to the overall experience, and are a nice break from the more serious parts of the albums. Electioneering on Radiohead's OK Computer is one of the favourite tracks off the album for the same reason.

I feel like this album fits better almost in todays market than it did back in 2010, and im so glad that people are giving it a relisten with new appreciation, or finding it through the youtube algorithm etc Empire Ants especially has gone through a resurgence in popularity and has been remixed countless times on all those 'homework radio 24/7' streams. Simply saw it chillin on the shelf and made a split decision to make the plunge. Spent the rest of that year blastin it through my first car's speakers and furthering my musical palette for years to come. Glad I was never a person who allowed myself to be boxed in taste wise by what my peers would expect of my music taste. It really marked a change in my life, from being one-dimensional with my music taste to really broadening my horizon. Also, seeing them live on this tour was insane as well. N.E.R.D. opened, and almost all of the guests (besides Snoop) performed, and the house band at the time was Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash on guitar and bass. I know it can be difficult to enjoy an italian music album, but I'm sure you're gonna love them because they're really international. I'm suggesting you two of their albums which are "Il Suicidio Dei Samurai" and "WOW"; the first one is from 2004, it's the album that made them so popular in Italy. The second one is from 2011 and it's considered one of the best rock album ever made. I know you're gonna love them. Glitter Freeze is such an incredible track to me. It's the perfect transition from the first half of the album to the latter half. The simplicity of the song makes it feel like a regular electronic dance banger, but I think the repetitiveness and uneasiness of the track at the end encapsulate the concept of the album. You idiot, you combined the 2 albums, Bad Habits & Good Intentions are 2 distinct albums (that both deserve a 10 because of their masterfully crafted lyrics and melodies)

Plastic Beach was that album that I always kinda just respected. Then as time went on, I began to love it more and more. Now it’s not just my favorite Gorillaz album, but my favorite album of all time.

This was the first album I bought as a kid with my first phone. Fell in love with it and became more in love with it when I listened to this album in Acapulco (the Miami of Mexico) this has been my favorite album ever since. A lot of Gorillaz “fans” always dissed me for not liking demon days more.

Chris Schuett nah i meant like buying it on my phone, before then I’ve bought, Demon days, their 19- 2000 album, D-sides, G sides, their singles collection, and the space monkeys vsGorillaz: Laika come home on DVD. It was just my first online purchase lol

Chris Schuett it was just more special cause I could listen to it anywhere I wanted instead of being limited to only my house where the DVD player was at, that’s why it’s so dear to me

I have _Plastic Beach_ on vinyl and I am certainly pleased to have it on CD and digitally as well. Just a great album all around! If there were a cassette pressing I likely would've gotten that, too.

I was 8 when this album came out, not really listening to music that much but had realized that one of my favorite songs just so happened to be “Melancholy Hill” without really realizing it. I’m 19 now and I’ve become so much more accustomed to music that I came back to this album to see why it’s such a great album and I’m blown away. This album is damn near perfect and with each listen I become more and more addicted. I love music, shits awesome
