The Ghost Division was the nickname of the 7th Panzer Division in the Wehrmacht (German Army in WW2). The name comes from the invasion of France in 1940 when under the command of the famous General Erwin Rommel the division drove forward so quickly and unexpectedly that neither the Allied nor German high command knew where they were, attacking as if they appeared from nowhere.

You have to appreciate the craziness that goes on here. Hundreds of thousands polish people in the audience goes totally bananas and sing along in a piece that tells the story about a German panzer division during second world war. The division actually fought in Poland during the later stage of the war. As we all know about the atrocities the German army and SS committed in Poland, one can think it would be a hard thing for a Polish crowd to appreciate. But no, Sabaton in their absolute objectivity in not picking sides on who is good and who is bad or glorifying war can make people on one side not only appreciate their music but also go totally nuts in songs portraying their former archenemy. That's what Sabaton does every day.

12:13 Rommel’s 7th Panzer division, aka the Ghost Division, lead the Blitzkrieg into France. They went a day earlier than scheduled and by nightfall had gone beyond the French lines. The craziest part - they were stopped by a French platoon, Rommel showed that he was the ultimate BS’er, he convinced the French that they were the ones that had strayed behind the German line and they surrendered (one of the reasons the French had that reputation for waving the white flag). Sabaton have a dedicated history channel cohosted by presenter, actor and historian Indy Neidell, which they explore the real stories behind their songs. They write the songs from a neutral perspective, not siding with anyone, not glorifying one side over the other, just “this is what happened”. Their last two albums (Great War and The War To End All Wars) are both exclusively about stories and events from World War One. The songs are very well written, but it’s the music videos that stand out… they have the look and feel of big budget movie productions! As for Sabaton as a live act - one of the best! I saw them in 2020 (just before the pandemic shut everything down), and I’m going to see them again in a couple of weeks… they open all their shows with Ghost Division, and they maintain the same energy right through the show, even with the amount of pyrotechnics blasting around the stage and pillars of fire cooking the crowd! Check out 40:1 from this same show (Poland Woodstock 2012), the song is about a group of Polish soldiers heavily outnumbered that held back the German Wehrmacht for a few days… it celebrates the gallantry of those soldiers against insurmountable odds, and as the show is in Poland, the crowd understandably resonates with it! Sabaton are capable of making you feel patriotic for another country for the duration of a song, so imagine what they do for those who’s country it is.

As per the Sabaton fandom wiki: The song tells about second chapter - "Waging War" in Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" book. Also: "In "Ghost Division" they wrote about the armored division under the command of Erwin Rommel. The guy was not an avid Nazi, he just followed orders, and at the same time he was a great commander who could show a lot of respect to the opponent and his soldiers. I think he managed to remain human after all. Even if he fought on the "wrong side.

Sabaton are a swedish metal band, the concert are in Poland at the Woodstock Festival. Sabatons songs always are about historical facts from all around the world. They are history geeks, and masters of storytelling. Can you please check the Sabaton song "7 Pillars of Wisdom", its the story about the Brittish officer Thomas E. Lawrence who led the Arab revolt against the Turks during WW1 and later became known as Lawrence of Arabia. A great Sabaton song.

Great reaction. Sabaton is swedish heavy/power metal band that sings mostly about historical events. Ghost division was the nickname given to Rommel's 7th armoured division during the battle of France in 1940 due to their excessive attack speed. Even their neghbouring units didn't know where the Rommel's units were at that time. Btw, this video from Sabaton's live from 2012 Woodstok festival in Poland, so it was way before Tommy Johanson joins the band as guitarist) in this video the guitarist's name was Tobbe Englund) and also drummer's name in this video is Robban Back. He was short time drummer for Sabaton before current drummer - Haanes Van Dal enters the band to change him due to Robban's departure from the band due to him becoming a father (as far as I know ) and his desire to spend time with the family))

600 000 happy Polish people singing about a German tank Division from WW2 sung by a Swedish band. still blows my mind. This was filmed at Woodstock Poland 2012 and it was a charity concert. They released their 10th studio album earlier this year. Nice thing about them is that their video's never blocked so it's KZbin safe. (except for some Wacken video's that gets blocked by Wacken) If you really want to go down the Sabaton rabbit-hole, I would recommend these: (These are all from the Sabaton Channel, and they never block videos so it's safe to use) [live at Woodstock 2012]: 40:1 and Uprising [Great Tour Live Videos]: En Livstied I Krig (make sure to turn subtitles on), Red Baron, Swedish Pagans, Primo Victoria, Fields of Verdun, Devil Dogs & Angels Calling [Lyric videos]: Attack of the dead men, The Final Solution, In Flanders Fields, 82nd All the way, Sparta, Shiroyama, Cliffs Of Gallipolli and The lost betallion [Music Video's]: Bismarck, Christmas Truce, Steel Commanders, Defence of Moscow, Livgardet (make sure to turn subtitles on), Fields of Verdun, Rourke's Drift, Screaming Eagles, Uprising, The Future Of Warfare (Building Blocks Video) & Seven Pillars of wisdom [Animated History Video's]: Night Witches and No Bullets Fly (not animated music video's, the animated history/story video's) [Covers]: Kingdom Come [Offical video] and I'm sure people told you but in case, Sabaton have another channel (Sabaton History Channel) where they do a deep dive into the history behind the songs with Indy Nidell.

Im glad Sabaton is helping people give themselves the history education their school system failed to provide for them. The Ghost Division (7th panzer division) was commanded by the famous german (later he became) general Erwin Rommel, who was later nicknamed the Desert Fox in the african campaign (you were right about them fighting in africa, just not in this particular song). The name "Ghost Division" comes from the fact they moved so quickly they lost contact with their own leadership and caused havoc in the french backlines, some french units they encountered along the way even mistook them for english reinforcements. The german leadership at one point believed the news of a small german break through the extended Maginot line (fortifications on the border) was a trap set by the french. In short, noone knew where they were, who they were and if they were even real, hence the name.

5:31 It's about the 7th PanzerDivision, commanded by Erwin Rommel going through the Ardennes in Belgium and France . Chronology of the 7th Panzer Division in Belgium and France May 12, 1940 - The 7th Panzer Division reaches Dinant ( Belgium ) May 13, 1940 - Crosses the Meuse after violent fighting May 15, 1940 - Reaches Philippeville and continues west passing Avesnes and Le Cateau after fighting against General Sancelme's 4th North African Infantry Division. May 21, 1940 - Arrives at Arras where it suffers a counterattack from 2 British tank regiments which will be stopped by the Flak 88 “tank killer” guns. June 5, 1940 - The 7th Panzer Division is positioned near Abbeville. June 8, 1940 - Reaches the suburbs of Rouen. June 10, 1940 - The 7th Panzer reached the English Channel west of Dieppe (Fécamp, Veules-les-Roses). June 17, 1940 - Rommel reached the southern suburbs of Cherbourg. June 19, 1940 - The Cherbourg garrison surrenders to Rommel. June 25, 1940 - Fighting ends for 7th Panzer Division in France. The speed of maneuver and its movements over great distances did not allow the enemy to locate the division, but this was also the case for the German High Command. Rommel assessed the importance of being with his men and commanding them from the front line, sometimes even if it meant being cut off from communications with High Command if he did not wish to be disrupted, his feeling was that it was preferable to 'Act first and explain everything later. Rommel was criticized for his actions which were outside of military practice. Rommel described the French campaign in his letters to his wife as "a whirlwind trip to France." The division was later under the command of Hans Emil Richard baron von Funck, he trained with it to prepare its active participation in operation Barbarossa.

Ghost Divisonor known in its formal name the 7th Panzer Division, was a German Tank Division during ww2, they got the name ghost division because during the battle against France and UK they advanced so fast and even the German command didn't know their exact locations, so they got the nickname because you didn't know where they where or if they "existed", its Commander during this series of battles was Erwin Rommel

The 7th Panzer Division was an armored formation of the German Army in World War II. It participated in the Battle of France, the invasion of the Soviet Union, the occupation of Vichy France, and on the Eastern Front until the end of the war. The 7th Panzer Division is also known by its nickname, Ghost Division. The division met with great success in France in 1940 and then again in the Soviet Union in 1941. In May 1942, the division was withdrawn from the Soviet Union and sent back to France to replace losses and refit. It returned to Southern Russia following the defeat at Stalingrad, and helped to check a general collapse of the front in a series of defensive battles as part of Army Group Don, and participated in General Erich von Manstein's counterattack at Kharkov.

Ghost Division was the 7th Panzer Division of Nazi-Germany. Their tactics was to show up unexpectedly and just steam-roll through any resistance and be gone by the time reinforcements could arrive. They moved so fast over enemy land no support could keep up and so they had to be their own support and logistics unit as well. They earned their reputation in France and Soviet Union.

No quite but close. (You might have meaning this too.) They got that nickname because they pushed trough the French lines, including mighty "maginot line" while all other German units was still behind it or passing trough where they breached it. They still continued to push farther in faster than the news reached French high command. Once those reports started to flooding in, it seemed like Rommels division was both nowhere and everywhere there by earning them the nickname by the French. If someone is interested more check out Sabaton History episode on this.

They even have a channel called Sabaton history channel where they go deeper in the story about the song. They are from Sweden.

I'm sure that you have been suggested this already, but you should react to some of Sabaton's animated videos about the events. They often include the background of the events and then tell the story.

I LOVE that Sabaton is always neutral. They give credit to valorous actions performed by soldiers or units in war time no matter what side of a war the soldier or unit was on. The History Channel partnered with them and they have a KZbin channel called Sabaton History which depicts the actual history of each song.

At that time it was "Woodstock STOP" festiwal now its POLandROCK, numbers are different depending who counts ;) but it's from 250 000 to 600 000 people every year on it. In 2011 Halloween played on that stage , there is small hill around 300-400 meters from main stage but Halloween drummer played such solo that the alarms in the cars parked on this hill went off... and i could feel it in my stomach!!!

Welcome to the wonderful rabbit hole that is Sabaton. I'm just gonna hand you a good lil playlist. No bullets fly, the animated story video. Lady of the dark, animated story video. Nightwitches, animated story video. Livstid I krig, live in Gothenburg. Livgardet, any video version. 1916, official video. The final solution, official lyric video. Bismarck, official video. Uprising, either live in Poland or the official video. Soldier of heaven, official video. Christmas truce, official video. That should be enough to get you started. Don't be worried about copyright claims and such from them though, they actually love when people make react content with their songs.😊

I been to 80k people metal festivals, I'm introvert part Autistic. It's just phenomenal. I never felt in danger, I never felt bad with those crowds like I could feel very bad following my parents during strikes in Paris with same amount of people. Truth is, this is a sea of peaceful people coming to listen the same shit as you and they are being careful. One year in wacken, at Sepultura concert, they were about to make a circle pit, they told us about it and adviced us to back off a little bit if we wanted to be safe. And so we did. Then last year, I went to a smaller concert and even participated in wall of deaths and circle pits and enjoyed it very much. So how does it feel ? Crazy good.

History Buff and decendent of a member of Ghost Division here. The name Ghost Division was used by many countries in the second World War. The most famous of them is what the song is about. Its about the the 7. Panzerdivision (7th Tank Division) of the Wehrmacht during the invasion of France in 1940 and their famous leader Erwin Rommel (better known by his later nickname Desert Fox). The 7th earned that name because NOONE knew where they where and where they would strike. Not even the own german highcommand knew what they were up to. They used their mobility and the slow reaction of the french. La division fantome that is the name the french gave them.

Sabaton concerts are great for children at smaller shows like their US tours (2000-3000) they often invite 1 or 2 kids to be on stage for the final song. If you want to hear some of their songs that concern american history i would recomend "82nd All the way" about Sgt. Alvin York highest decorated american soldier in WW 1, "To Hell and Back" about Audie Murhphy highest decorated soldier in WW 2, "Devil Dogs" about the US Marines battle at Bellau Woods (if you choose the official music video it's a montage from their pre corona US tour and shows a lot about their audience)

it was about rommell, his push was so fast that german high command lost track of where he was at any one time and his ability to appear where least expected lead to his 7th division being labelled the ghost division,. ie 200km in one day and 240km in 24hrs.

Regarding your comment at 8:36 that you can go behind the stage: I don't think it's the stage you see in the middle of the picture, it's more likely to be the "sound and light booth". It's simply where the people in charge of light and sound sit, so they can do their respective jobs without being crawled on by the audience. As for the audience: yes, it's big. Sabaton seem to be inordinately popular in Poland, where this was recorded.

If you like intimate shows, see sabaton live, 80% of the crowd sings most songs and are as a big group, i have been to their own festival: Sabaton Open Air 6 times and i have met people from all around Europe. They released an album in both english and swedish, when they play A lifetime of war in swedish (en livstid i krig) most people sing along, no matter where they are from, they learn that song. That is how kind of inclusive their songs are, they bring everyone together, they bring out feelings from everyone to feel together as common people.

Ghost Division! Welcome to the Sabaton rabbit hole! The Ghost Division was the German 12th Panzer Division, commanded at one point by Erwin Rommel. They earned their name during the invasion of France, slipping through the French Defense in the Ardennes Forest. At one point even the German high command didn't know where they were. The band is from Sweden. Editing to say that (this) Woodstock is a *huge* open air metal-fest in Poland every year. I want to go.

@The NEW Reel yes, that is true and fair enough. Not everyone likes history, not everyone knows or cares about it, I get it. This is just such basic history knowledge that it hurts to see a fellow history geek not know that. We could give you a pass on a technicality, in WWI the Germans actually had ONE tank, or panzer if you will, since 1917 so i guess it could be fine. No hate here man, just wanted to joke around about the history geek not knowing about panzers. Best wishes to both.

@@nikolamladenovic8828 Lol All good here, I honestly knew that but I am weird about answering a FINAL ANSWER type of question on a KZbin Video unless I know I'm correct 100% because honestly even with a disclaimer like "I could be wrong" or "I am not quite sure but..." if you are wrong Then that is something the comments will have a BLAST with lol and I am honestly surprised I knew as much about it as I did! I definitely impressed myself and the hot half German chick I'm married to so I call that a win! Lol and I was specifically told by someone else in another comment that I am Definitely not a "History Geek" because the definition of "Geek" is that a Geek is knowledgeable about the topic they are a Geek about.... Hmmm Idk If it is official or not but he said he was a History teacher so he was qualified to say that 🤓 Regardless He reminded me of one of the reasons why I disliked high school so much haha Seriously though I do find a lot of History fascinating and tend to gravitate to more of Earlier History like the Crusades and ancient Egypt and that sort of thing, so maybe if Sabaton has a song about King Tutankhamun or something of that nature then maybe I can redeem myself! We have fun here and try not to take anything too serious so I can handle a roasting in the comments lol Thanks for taking the time to watch and make fun of me! 🤣 We really do appreciate it.
