Don't Have Time to Declutter? Think Again.

Declutter, a word that brings utter terror to my thoughts. January is my month for getting rid of "stuff". I started out just standing in front of my closet in total confusion about what to keep, donate or throw away. I was thinking about every piece of clothing, every pair of shoes, every scarf. I found I was putting so much thought into the process it became overwhelming. After a few minutes, I just gave up shut the closet door went to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. I developed a new plan and started only giving myself a very short time to make a decision about where an item should go. I only work fifteen minutes at a time and then go do something else. This system has really helped me to keep it simple. I wish everyone luck in decluttering and making life simple.

Since you mentioned stains on clothing. For grease and other stains I take dawn dish detergent and rub on the spot asap. Let it stay there until I do my laundry. It comes off and good as new.

I retired in July 2024 and have just begun to face my closet. I'm going by category (dresses, skirts, etc). This week I got rid of 45 items! And I have several more categories to go! In every category, I let about 30% of my inventory go. Keeping stats is helping my motivation.

I remember at some point in my youth having a bed without a headboard. It was not comfortable to sit and read. Then again, a bed is made to sleep in not to read. I guess I got so used to seeing beds with a headboard even if they serve no purpose other than decoration. I Imagine my bed without a headboard, and I can't see it. I love my headboard. Lol. Then again, it's your preference. I could safely guess men who use their beds to sleep don't care for headboards. Maybe I'm wrong.

I'm taking a break at work to watch this 😊 Your cleaning routine and category style declutter today reminded me of what my friend told me: She made herself a decluttering schedule with each room broken into smaller categories/projects as she's very motivated by "check marks". She also added in the date of completion so she knew when it was time for a review. I truly agree that every bit of decluttering you do adds up fast. And whatever strategy works best for the person - they should run with it.❤ Importantly - we have to be careful about protecting our spaces from further inflow no matter how we choose to declutter. Great job on the shirts 🤗

When I declutter my wardrobe, I always try on each piece. This gives me the opportunity to say "Wow!" or "What was I thinking?" I go through this process at least 4 times per year. I recently brought some of my clothes to a local consignment shop. I also donate clothes. One should always be comfortable in your clothes. You did good, Tim. I like your suggestion of going through one segment or one drawer to not create the feeling of being overwhelmed. Loved this video.

I got decluttered after a fire 10 years ago. After that I sad to myself: I put meaning into the the loss by not putting any more meaning into things. It served me well! I have exactly 3setsof cloths: 2 black dresses (one with pink, one with blue accents, 1 totally black which can be worn as a tunica also), 2 black leggins, I black pullover, 1 black trousers, and 2 black t shirts. I have 3 scarves to pair it with. the Rest is just sports wear and underwear. It really serves me well. I never have cloths hanging around on the floordrobe. I never have to think what to pack 🙂 Its so easy and a huge timesaver.

I can’t sew well with t-shirts- too stretchy for me but I keep any clothes with firm 100% cotton, flannel, denim or corduroy for sewing projects. I think t-shirts make good potholder material. Blessings. ❤❤❤

I’ve been going on some week long biking trips. I have a closet full of old running shirts I’ve picked up at races. I now take one shirt for each day of the event and then toss it at the end of the days ride. My load gets lighter and my carry on has more room.

With my ADD, it's easier for me to keep most of my clothes similarly colored, so most of my everyday clothes are black/dark sweaters, sweatshirts and tops with blue jeans or Jean skirts & black shoes or boots. It's quicker decisions for my cluttered brain to make. I suppose I stole the idea from Steve Jobs.😊 I realized I need to make things simpler for me and not care what others think.

There is nothing more annoying than clothing that fits just "ok". I tried to be ok with three new tshirts. But in the end I got rid of them. Feels so much better. It is so much more than freeing up space and having less stuff. It is often the negative thoughts surrounding said items that get decluttered, too, which brings you relief and a sense of calm. That is why I love this exercise. It was nice to see you revisit the closet and get rid of a nice stack of shirts. Carry on.

If and when I travel, I pack a month ahead. I wouldn't pack any earlier because I wouldn't know the weather at the time where I'm going. Also, if currently I'm in summer and go to a place where there is winter when I arrive, then I would have to pack accordingly. Also, fabrics tend to loose their quality even if it's a famous designer brand or high-end quality in a Suitcase. Clothes need to breathe sort of speak, as well as contained foods turn rancid kept too long in the pantry if not used asap.

Laundry declutter: towels, hand towels, kitchen towels with holes and tattered go to my husband for work projects. Silverware declutter last week include a text message auction between my 2 daughters. I take pictures of silverware 🍴🥄🔪I don't want and they get to "bid" on it. Whatever is left over, is donated to the thrift shop. As I'm getting ready for my kitchen to have some work, I have decluttered some coffee cups and bowls. My daughter took a few plates and bowls. I want to keep my kitchen simple (white Shaker cabinets). Today I "hushed" ( very interesting concept ) my counter top by cleaning up products to 2 and dishwashing soap. The only appliance I keep on the counter is the coffee maker...naturally. Not going through your underwear on video... You are welcome...is hilarious. I'm actually doing that too😀 Joan

When I take student tour groups to the British Isles or Europe, I hold a series of meeting with them and their parents leading up to the trip to enhance the experience and build anticipation. In one meeting, I will give them a suggested packing list and show them a proper size suitcase (not too big) and demonstrate how to pack efficiently. For the two week trips, I tell them to take only 7 pairs of underwear. Of course, I always get the question, "But I thought the trip was two weeks? We're going to need more underwear!" "Yes, 14 days, but 7 are all you need because you can turn them inside out every other day," I say. Can you imagine the questioning horror on their and their parents' faces? LOL I pause for a while before I tell them that I am joking. 🙂 Then tell them how to rinse things out in the hotel bathroom and let them dry overnight. LOL

😕 You mentioned Pillow's. This could be considered a subject of Controversy . . . Of course we A-l-l "want" &"use" them for Sleeping. As far as for Aesthetic's (Decor) Women want MORE Pillow's but Men seem to Dispise the Removal of All those Pillow's but NO Pillow's ? 🤔 GOOD JOB on De-Cluttering your T-Shirt's Tim.👍🏽 Seem's that you've also got a Carmel Colored one that was Nice. There is a point at which minimalism becomes a type of disease. When you have to put away pillows every morning so they cant be seen on your bed through the day, but then you get them out at night to use them, when your bed would actually look better with them on it, l think you may have reached that point. Your bedroom looks very cold and ugly. It could look lovely

It’s the choice I made. It’s quite freeing. And wearing the same thing is probably a guy thing. :)
