I go back far enough when the paramilitaries had a deal where every prisoner got a pint of Gunness on Christmas day in ireland. Good times although very sad too being away from family. Was always thankful for the teetotals punching their card and giving me their Guinness. When you're drinking nothing but prison hooch on the off chance a good pint of stout was always a welcome present. The last decade that's been pulled back and now guys just get wrecked on gear instead unfortunately. I had a celly that was the best story teller I ever heard. He could recite great book line for line practically so Christmas was never much a bother with the exception of wishing you were out with family.

Generally you get sent to jail when you serve less than a year sentence. Prison is generally for time served more than a year. Overcrowding at any level can change that.

Yeah, there’s federal prisons and state prisons, and some are privately owned. Federal prison is definitely worse than state prison for the most part. There’s also local, city and county jails depending on if you get picked up by the sheriffs department or the police department.
