Although Genta's Royal Oak design is generally considered the introduction of steel to luxury watches, the Rolex GMT was playing this part almost 20 years previous. I understand that the context in which the AP was designed and released was ground breaking (amidst the quartz crisis) but, the consideration was not there for Rolex who did advertise to the wealthy man looking to indulge in something of both Luxury and sport. Credit where credit is due, the AP is a fabulous watch which shook the "luxury realm" but, lets not forget the paths that were carved many years before... All I've got to say is, props to PanAM!

Out of all the Rolex sport models the GMT is up there for me.. cant get over the way the pepsi colorway sits! As Anna said, its the perfect blend between tool and jewl! I must say though for ANY sport model, crown guards seem like an essential component.. completes the look! (BTW the amalfi strap I got is an angel!)

The 2019 BLNR! Not mentioned, which I understand. However, I looked to buy a BLNR when it was first released on the Oyster bracelet... My plan was to purchase and put it on a jubilee. I waited. Then in 2019, boom. It was released, only now with a 72 hour movement. Best watch I've ever purchased.

My grandfather gave me his GMT...a 1675 in yellow gold from 1969, with a brown bezel, brown nipple dial, and "Concorde" hands! My favorite watch in my entire collection and probably my favorite GMT, but that might be more for sentimental reasons! Love the content!

It is funny that today I remembered my childhood dream of becoming a pilot and I started watching videos about airplanes . A few hours later I discovered your video about Rolex GMTs😄. I was never a big Rolex GMT fan but now I can see these watches in a different way.
@wharry31164 жыл бұрын
Im in the same boat regarding the vintage references - for me there's something about the more refined aluminium bezel, the sleeker dimensions and the jubilee that puts those references a head and neck above the rest... not to mention the fact that it works with any attire.

I think the first Rolex GMT I ever saw, strangely enough, was a vintage root beer. That GTM-Master 6542 reminds me of it so much. Maybe the nipple dial? Absolutely stunning pieces!

Don't remember what video it was but it was either Anna or Christian who explained why Rolex was and continues to be the king of the watch industry. Rolex understands - better than any other watch brand - what people want from their watches. Not just watch people but people. So naturally, I loved it when Anna said that Rolex, after popular demand, released a steel GMT with a Pepsi bezel in 2018. It's so Rolex and it makes me so happy that Rolex continues to understand what the people want. Great video Anna!

Week in and week out you guys continue to release absolute bangers. This video is a bit different though. It’s special. It’s about the GMT. The watch that got me into watches. The one that kicked me into the rabbit hole. The watch that started a fascination that inevitably lead me to this channel. I love the gmt and though I don’t have one in my personal collection ( yet 😉 ) I can genuinely say this watch has changed my life. Thanks for all the amazing content, and good luck to everyone!

Great, concise run through. Easily digestible content to squeeze in after a hard night's work. Personally love the 16710LN... Would love to have a GMT Master II that is a little more subtle so a little less concern traveling (whenever that becomes a thing again). Also love the earlier smaller case.

I think the GMT is so important and special because it rises above the everlasting battle of Rolex vs Omega. While the watch fam is split between Sub vs Seamaster and Daytona vs Speedmaster, Omega has no serious answer to the GMT Master. It stands alone unrivaled as the undisputed champ of travel watches. Im definitley an Omega fanboy, but I love the GMT Master! Great chanel, you guys haved helped me through lockdown. Keep the vids coming!

@vincenzodigrande20704 жыл бұрын
I feel they should go back to 38mm and more flat, it wears so much nicer, it looks so much less clumsy and pompous. I also find it worth mentioning that with the dials with applied indices the gmt hand and hour hand swapped places to make sure the gmt hand would not get stuck on the indices. So placing the much smaller hour hand first made sense. And the 3186 movement found in the most modern gmt does not feature a date quick set function.
@garethbracewell51704 жыл бұрын
Fully agree! The proportions of the new GMT along with the chunky crowngaurds just don't quite do it for me. I am much more open to chunkier watches if their functions warrants it but unlike a dive watch there's no need for an aviation watch to have this form factor. interesting to see the way rolex have gone with the etched bezel insert as well, personally i would have preferred something which hearkens back to the vintage GMT's - maybe something along the lines of the Fifty Fathoms bezel - to differentiate it from the Sub. Great video, the hands on the 6542 are unreal!

Great recap of GMT Master history and evolution. Anna is a wonderful presenter and is a real asset to the channel. I love the 2018 root beer model and would be very pleased if they release a jubilee bracelet version for the two-tone reference. Rolesor variants in rose gold are much more appealing to my eye than a steel/yellow gold combo.

A really informative and engaging video Anna, thanks! The GMT is certainly not the most iconic that Rolex have offered. However, for me it certainly is the most diverse, fascinating and varying range that Rolex offer. I think you could easily focus a collection just on the 1675 for example let alone other references. Got to agree with you Anna on the nipple dial, one of my favourite nuances Rolex have ever included. Thanks again!

I would love to see more color options with the GMT. It seems like Rolex drip feeds color combos in. Let’s see an all green bezel with black dial. Or, and I know I’ll catch some heat for this, but how about color combos that appear faded out of the box in ceramic (like the Squale tropic GMT) to still get a little vintage flair with modern conveniences. I’d also like to see a more elegant yellow gold GMT find its way back into the fold.

I told her that I'd love to see it so she brings in a picture of the watch. It is a gorgeous GMT Master 16700 that he wears daily and loves. Here is a question... if both a datejust and an explorer (new models of each), are both in an oystercase, both have 100m water resistance, and both have 904l steel, does that make the datejust as sturdy as an explorer? can a datejust go to everest/camping/beach etc and not have to worry about it durability?

Something I’ve always found interesting about the Vintage Rolex GMT was the fascination and therefore premium, surrounding the faded Pepsi bezels. Personally, while I’m a huge fan of patina on a dial, I feel that the faded bezel takes away from the beauty of the watch and will always be a distraction. Just my opinion as I know many love the faded bezel 😁

Very interesting and comprehensive knowledge covering a watch that I had thought was just a Submariner with a different bezel for the GMT complication. An example of theme and variation, the GMT from Rolex takes most of it's design from the Submariner. Some would consider this to be lazy, but it's actually pretty ingenious. Of all the available multiple time zone watches out there, I enjoy the aesthetics of the Rolex GMT best. I love it so much, I bought a Parnis version, which is a Chinese direct homage. The next time I have a spare 13 grand, I'll definitely pick up the real deal.

A friend of mine, a decade ago sent a 6542 Pepsi to Rolex for service, the Bakelite bezel insert had been replaced with a SS item many years before as you would expect, when it came back the insert had been replaced with an original NOS Bakelite insert. At the time it must have been the best in the world, it was flawless. I often wonder if it stayed so perfect with them being so fragile.

I really love the GMT Master and GMT Master II, its just the perfect middle between a rugged tool watch and a “dressier” watch. While certainly not dressy, it does look much better in a smart casual setting than lets say a Submariner. As you described it Anna, it feel like it was meant for people who were not just interested in a tool, but much rather looked for a practical extension of their “jetset” style.

My favorite GMT is the GMTII 16710. It is a preceramic Coke bezel from the late 90s. It must be unpolished with an original bezel. The bezel must have the serifs. The indexes are tritium. The dial would say Swiss - T

I love the GMT Master/II, the size is perfect and its functionality is ideal for most individuals. Cool aesthetics, and although I love all of the bezel color combinations so far (particularly the pepsi), I wish Rolex introduced more colorways, but that’s highly unlikely to happen. Notwithstanding, I do believe Tudor can take this as an opportunity and offer their BB GMT in different color bezels, I think that would be awesome and the options could be endless. Personally, I think it would be interesting to see a blue/green or blue/orange bezel insert on a matte blue dial.

Rolex is one of the brands where I struggle the most with vintage vs modern. I love modern movements but the aesthetics of the older models. Movements are why I might want a 6 digit Day-Date but lust for a Buckley 1803. The same goes for GMTs; I love the best of the best but the ceramic bezels don't appeal to me at all. Aluminum bezel Coke is the way to go (even if it's the only way one can go currently!), but even if a ceramic one came out I'd stick to a 16750

For me the best GMT is the 16700, because is the last of the GMT Master series if i'm not wrong, and they are in the "neo vintage" era, so this reference was still made with tritium so they can develop that nice creamy texture (same with the bezel wich is aluminum, so will fade with time), but they also have the metal circle around the hour marker and a more modern movement with quickdate set, wich make this reference the perfect combination of the things i like of the vintage and the modern versions
