For today’s episode, Jon and Justin are joined by Ken Jones (pastor of Glendale Baptist Church and host of Saints and Sinners Unplugged). The guys talk about revivalism. There are two distinct traditions within American Protestantism: one is the confessional/ordinary means of grace tradition; the other pietistic and revivalistic. What are the differences between the two? What about the First Great Awakening? What is it that characterizes any genuine movement of God?
Semper Reformanda is included in today’s episode for free!
Semper Reformanda: Jon, Justin, and Ken answer the question, “What do we make of the Puritans?” And then, the guys go on do discuss the Marrow Controversy and how it is applicable to today.

I believe repentance is changing your mind from unbelief to unbelief in Christ. You recognized that you are a sinner with no hope and change your mind about your state of being. It’s not stop sinning, I.e stop lying, stealing, etc.

Good point about Jonah and his experience of being an "evangelist". LOL. But I think a stable mix of both "religious conviction" (maybe would be more accurate than "religious experience"?) would be a better way of putting it. Look at Acts and Paul; none of those conversions were void of some format of the experience of the impact (particularly) of the Holy Spirit making converts alive. "Experience" is one thing; but when God "cuts the lights on"; that's a whole other dimension of awareness, which though involves moral conviction, it's much more compelling of influence to obedience than "feeling good" about "doing the right thing" from a moral stand point. And let's not forget that all the conversions in the Book of Acts also took place "outside of the church". The conversions were the foundation of the church; not the other way around. And even in all revivals post Pentecost; the converts "coming in" are what make up the true eternal church. Then on the flip side of this, I can say from my own personal experience being in churches; it's often far more the "social club of similar ideological beliefs" than the genuine family of God. There are many many believers I've maintained contact with over the years. (Things happen, people move, people die.) But most of the reliable spiritual support I've gotten has been from these life long friendships and not "church" in general. Of course I've "gotten good doctrine" out of listening to sermons; (some of which were from churches on the other side of the world). And yet I'm aware that my experience is not unique in this too. This is why channels like this one and Justin Peters and McArther etc. have tens of thousands of followers. "Never the less, when the son of man comes; will he find faith on the earth?" Luke 18:8

The revivalism in Biblie always was a reform, and a come back to the good doctrine, good worship, but the revivals (also the first in America) was a separation ot the reformed standarts even of confessions, worship, and good goverment of church, doctrine, and a movement outside of the church. It is true that the church in this time wasn't good, because happened importants things in Church os Scotland that implied the declive of true religion (revolution Church). Whitefield hadn't good doctrine...there was anécdotes interestings... he is the father of parachurch ministry, and he represents a separation of reformed tradition. The canons of Dort take arminianism like a false gospel, how it is.

Interesting analysis, thank you for that... in my opinion the controversy of Marrow in Scotland, is a so important issue, but we must to know that after the persecución (after 1689) with the revoultion Church period, this church had 3 divisions... the first is with covenanters, the second is with this issue and anothers with Erskines and the third was about patronage, in less of fifty years 3 divisions.. in my opinion de second issue was the marrow controversy, with the neonomism, it is so basic for the gospel (and it is so important for today, with Piper, FV and others), but in was like a judge of God for the apostasy for left the covenant thst they made before.
