You’re absolutely right. My SBF made most hp on the dyno at 29 degrees. Efficient chambers like very little timing. Too much preload will always cost you top end power.

"Too much pre-load will always cost you top end power"... Technically that's not true. Yes, when dealing with small, lazy lobe profiles with little spring pressure. No, when dealing with aggressive lobe profiles, with big boy spring pressure and rpm, where valve control is key. It's application specific, and a lot more going on there, so I wouldn't say they "always" do. Too many variables.
@JohnThomas-vb9se
@JohnThomas-vb9se 2 жыл бұрын
@@jrdmotorsports9718 I mean you can tune solid rollers with lash too. Too much preload on any hydraulic cam has been proven for decades to cause top end power loss. We’re talking about a baby cam. Not reinventing the wheel here. Anything that’s going in a small time street deal.
@jrdmotorsports9718
@jrdmotorsports9718 2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnThomas-vb9se All good, I was just clarifying not ALL hydraulic rollers have these issues with a good amount of preload. Small rollers and flat tappets, yes, it will limit rpm capability and just don't run right. Big boy stuff requires preload, and more of it. Just didn't want anyone getting confused in thinking ALL hydraulic rollers are like that, regardless what name is on the side of the block. 👍

When I first started wrenching on cars, I was a mechanics helper at the local olds/buick/gmc store. I was blessed to be working with an amazing mechanic who taught me that the difference between a mechanic and a parts changer. Its all driveability.... The ability to drive a car and diagnose by sound, feel, and even smell. Bill is my every definition, a hell of a mechanic. Its an invaluable resource to have in your life. The young guys can throw it together, and the old man can make it work.

Man watching you drive Billy’s mustang with Billy riding shotgun makes me miss my Dad soooo damn bad!! He passed 2 years ago and he was my teacher just like how you’re doing with billy on that test drive. He would ALWAYS be explaining (very technically) what was going on with the engine after making upgrades or setting timing on our 1975 Formula with a 406”Pontiac. He’d been building engines since he was 14. That would have been 1966. My pops was born in 1952. So he had DEFINITELY seen some things! So when he spoke about an engine, I listened all ears! Love watching y’all’s content Bill!

Best wished for your dad & all family Bill. I still remember Wally Booth back around 1984-89 teaching me (as a rookie) how to adjust hydraulic lifters just the way you did it. And basically just read the cam card backwards..."when intake starts to close adj. exhaust, when exhaust starts to open adj. intake.... Always worked for me & I surprised a buddy of mine who'd said he always had to hot lash valves on a SBC while running. I built the engine and dry lashed valves the way Wally taught me and they were perfect! He was shocked and demanded, "How'd you do that?!" Initially I told him, "You'll never know but I GOT it!" LOL Although later I did show him how....

extremely impressive... I realize that Billy is fast becoming one heck of a Tuner. Just being able to take a laptop and have the ability to truly understand what changes should be made and how those changes can truly affect a cars performance. Its really easy with efi to end up deep down the rabbit hole by making the wrong change but still getting the desired affect....That is ...until you dont. Then the real work starts. And your understanding and your ear when it comes to more analog systems, its obvious what you are capable of and its something that has become some what of a dying art and the only way anyone can get to your level is with patience and years of experience. Time is really the only teacher. Well sir I dont really want to waste anymore of your time, I just want want to let you guys know how much I enjoy the family dynamic and teamwork you all possess. Yall are truly one hell of a team. Thanks for the content. And look forward for much more. I can really appreciate the time and effort that goes in to all of it and the sacrifices you all make.Thanks again yall have a heck of a fan down here in Georgia! I really hope to be able to meet you guys someday. As a disabled veteran my traveling has really become a thing of the past, but you never know, I just may actually make it out to a track near you folks someday...but until then you guys take care and most of all , Be Safe!

Build a ton of SBFs. Hydraulic rollers we set to zero, half turn preload, screw down the allen head in the center and then put just a little more on the hex head poly lock to secure. It ends up being barely over a half. Over the years we have figured out if you replace a cast iron head with an aluminum head it is really best to bump up the compression. That 3cc isn't gonna cut it. While the aluminum head flows better, it dissipates heat and lessens the efficiency of the combustion cycle. We started putting on the smaller fifty some CC combustion chamber heads getting the compression up around 10:1 or a little more. It will still run on pump gas and really picks up the power. 302s are great little motors, but they are exactly that, 'little motors'. They will make power but gotta find the sweet spot. Since the heads are already on there, don't worry about the compression just throw more nitrous to it and don't worry if it is down on power NA. Thanks for the content.

That's all I run is no more then 1/4 turn past preload, I'd start off with 74/84 jets and 33-34* timing, I use the lightest springs in the distributor, this seems to be a good sweet spot on my 357w. Bill your right about running too much timing on these ford SBs, mine ran hot at 36-37*.

I absolutely love what this channel has become. Its great to have the high end production of the street racing channel combined with the day to day activities of the family full of racers. My beloved street racing channel hat is about worn through, hoping to be able to get a replacement soon. Til then I will watch every ad so at least I'm helping where I can. Thanks for the view into your world.
