Painted the cull cows that are heading to the works next week. Shifting the heifers and doing a little bit of fencing
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey I’m Andrew The Once A Day Farmer, I farm alongside my father on my family dairy farm in New Zealand.
Our Dairy system is quite unique as we only milk our 320 jersey cows Once A Day (hence the name), and they stay outside on grass for 365 days of the year!!

Awesome video as always my friend. Great to see you catching up on repairing or replacing fencing. You definitely got your cows well trained, waiting at the wire while you do some fencing, but patients pays when they get into the next paddock with all that fresh grass, all you can hear is chomp chomp the sound of happy cows. Thanks for sharing mate.

Relatively new subscriber here 🇮🇪. Really enjoying the videos. Have you a favourite electric fence brand for reels, posts, insulators etc? Also do you loop the polywire around the hook to energise the reel? That's how l do it
@TheOnceADayFarmer
@TheOnceADayFarmer 3 жыл бұрын
Most of the electric fencing gear down here is Gallagher, which are pretty good. Yep I hook it around the reel a couple of times 👍

on the old farm i was on we would life the pigtail up and the cows would walk under the wire either side of you, we never had to much issues doing it that way but your cows would have to be use to it

when you send your cows to the meatwork. How do you now what price you get for a cow .How is buying and selling cows aranged in new zealand
@TheOnceADayFarmer
@TheOnceADayFarmer 3 жыл бұрын
Buying and selling cows in NZ is mainly done through stock agents. same as sending them to the works, you still go through a stock agent. But the price you get all depends on the meat schedule, at the moment it is pretty low because everyone is off loading there empty and cull cows. But for me it was worth milking them longer and getting less for them if that makes sense 👍

Do you also have a list of you high and low cow's - high producing and low producing as they all eat the same amount - you are really want heifers from you highs, good at OMAD, low cell count, no mastitis in the family history. good feet - have you thought about weeding them out and doing AI with them with female sperm only
@TheOnceADayFarmer

I really only want to take heifer calves from cows calving in the 1st 3 weeks, ideally it would be nice to only take heifers from the good cows but we have struggled to get a 25% replacement rate over the last couple of years so I’ll take any over that time. I am trying sexed semen this year to see how it goes, it’s only 30 straws tho
