Liberal Arts AND Sciences - I am positive for sure that people are allowed to take two college programs, so maybe (just maybe), Makoto strives to do the things she wants for Chiaki which is to preserve the painting that he wants to see in his future timeline by taking up liberal arts in order for her to have knowledge on art preservation. On the other hand, she will plan on making a time machine based on her knowledge and experience when she had the time walnut with her in doing some time leaps by also taking up science. Or maybe since Kazoku is already an artist, Makoto can ask her to preserve the painting while she takes up science in order to create a time walnut in order to catch up with Chiaki. I think I know for a fact that the film ended on a good note and that Hosoda decided to take the good route since in the original source material, it is shown that Kazoku had a somewhat bad resolution since she ended up being an artist to preserve an art without having any memory of the time traveller she has loved. In this film, I agree with the quote from Kazoku when she was conversing with Makoto, she thinks that Makoto “is the type of girl who does not wait.” If you think about it, it would suggest that Makoto will do everything in order to meet Chiaki. Here, Makoto’s memories of him were not erased by Chiaki and therefore displays his strong affections for Makoto I strongly believe that Chiaki does love Makoto and that the con-artist theory may just ruin the greatness of the film from the beginning. When Chiaki said to Makoto that “I’ll be waiting for you,” it implies that Chiaki does reciprocate her feelings and therefore makes them feel like destined lovers, it will just take some time for them to meet each other in the future. As for Makoto’s reply, “Okay I won’t be long. I’ll come running,” highly suggests that Makoto might plan on finding a way to catch up with him which is none other than time-leap which is related to what I have said about her taking up science in order to build a time walnut. The way the film ended with Makoto replying to Kosuke being “It’s a secret, I’ll tell you some other time,” makes up an ambiguous ending which will leave audiences open with many interpretations. I hope my interpretation helped you and others reading it. At first viewing I was confused and frustrated with the final act being abrupt and out of the blue but after consecutive replays, I’ve finally come to love The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - 8/10

I think youre right with the second theory. Makoto did tell Chiaki when he said he'll be waiting for her that she will run to him (which sort of feels similar to jumping and thus time travel in that sense)

I personally hope that the second theory is the right one too.

Are paintings worth toying with people's feelings? But the fact the he didn't tell her his feelings the last thing he has to say to her had me thinking again; now that she assured him the painting will be restored he doesn't need to tell her he likes her. but then again, Chiaki told her he'll be waiting for her.

Their world has changed a lot compared to the present day. Chiaki mentions how rare paintings have become. But maybe it could be both, that he likes her AND wants the painting restored.

She can wait but she's in her 40's if he met him by coincidence, but I believe Mamoru Hosada hinted at something in the film; check 1:14:00 then you can read the subtitle "They say he's marrying an older girl" then 1:14:02 "I heard she got pregnant"... Isn't it strange?

Something within my core being just can’t appreciate an ambiguous ending. I do like these kinds of movies, but even after I finished ‘Your Name’ it just made me feel displeased… like an orchestra suddenly stopped playing before the actual ending to the piece. I’m not saying it’s a bad narrative decision; on the contrary, I wish I could appreciate them more. Am I alone in innately desiring a more concrete ending?

Very good analysis, I hope that you give more information if you make a video about the ending. Also the voice recording needs work but other than that, it’s well done.

Thank you! I will definitely work on the voice recording in my future videos.
