In Vietnam I basically only ate the boned chicken C-ration cuz so many of the others disagreed with me. I wasn't a smoker, so I would trade my camels for something sweet. They had these delicious dense maple candy bars in the rations that I couldn't get enough of. I was a Hospital Corpsman there near the demilitarized zone with the 3rd Marine Division in 1969.

C rations are great and we had our last rations in Panama in the late 90s. However I think with all the sightings we've been having lately with Bigfoot with a skunk ape depending what part of the country you're in. One has to show extremely respect and if you're going to go in the woods always carry some sort of protection. If you're sharing the backwoods with Bigfoot you better have a escape plan establish.

That looks so much like where I live in Korea. High mountains, bumpy/narrow roads, but fantastic views of the area! I've lived in Korea for ten years now served with the US Army Reserve here for nine years. There are quite a few ex-military or military related people that live here.

Your channel was the first backpacking and camping channel I ever subscribed to and it was actually because I was researching some piece of military surplus or another. The military surplus overnight trips have always held a special place in my heart after that. Between your channel and a couple others, I finally felt prepared to do an overnight backpacking trip of my own, and it was one of the most challenging, thrilling things I've done in ages. Thanks for getting me out there and enjoying life! Also, the spaghetti MRE was pretty wrecked from what I remember.

Worst MRE: I was in the Army when MRE's began replacing C-rations. One of the earlier MRE meals produced was the dehydrated beef patty meal. The early meals did not have heaters to warm the food. For the beef patty you soaked it in cold water and then added a ketchup powder paste that you also rehydrated. I remember the grease from the cold patty coating the roof of my mouth. It was definitely the worst for me.

I remember my first time of eating one of those "DARK" BROWN BAG LUNCH meals (thats what I called them anyway), we use to get "brown bag" lunches from the galley prior to going out on patrol on a C130. Had the hamburger (meat like substance) meal and yes, remember the powdered ketchup and yes, it was just nasty). Big improvement from then to now IMO. I just seen where they added pizza slices as a menu item. Guess back then though, freeze dried food was a good idea but not well executed (my choice for freeze dried food is mountain house and back packers pantry). Thanks for your part of keep out nation safe. Retired Coast Guard Radioman sends. And Luke, his crew and this channel ROCKS!

Yeah, those were bad. After my first field problem, I was taught to carry a few ramen noodle packages in my ruck. Those and the pork patties, broken up, put in ramen noodles, with the cheese and some tobasco, actually wasnt bad. The worst were the 5 fingers of death. Or the omelette. Definitely the omelette now that I think about it.

Diesel engines are the sound of my childhood. My parents drove Chevy Suburbans for many years, and you could hear them from a block or two away, so I knew when to stop goofing off. Thanks for this video, as always, it's things like this that are getting me more excited about moving to the US again! Also, I'm watching this while I have a game minimized to the task bar, and some big demon walked by in the game and I thought you had added in Bigfoot footsteps to your video.

I drive a 88 k5 blazer, (dual port tbi 350) with a 4-speed, offroad 700r4 beast. all original besides a few minor upgrades, roughly 250k miles, runs like a champ, so if your gonna talk negatively about chevy, at least talk junk about the new ones, then ill back you up then 😂👍

Vegetarian is the only MREs I eat. They don’t clog you up, they aren’t made with an animal that would be dead by natural causes by the time it gets to you, they have the best salty snack items, and they have the best drink mixes, they always have peanut butter and jelly, and they all have a first strike bar.

Fast forward to April 2020 and we're on lockdown due to the Covid-19 crisis. I love your past adventures with Moose as it takes me on an adventure involving overland camping, an activity I truly love now. As I venture into my 70's (almost 73 now) the days of backpacking are few and far between. My Jeep is "pre-packed" and a bug out bag and a reconnaissance bag are sitting under my desk ready to deploy. My wife knows as soon as the governor says the lock down is over my butt is out the door and the Monongahela wilderness is my destination. Thank you, Luke, for helping us to retain our collective sanity by living vicariously through your adventures. I know you and Susan plan on traveling and wish you safe travels and we'll look forward to the videos.

My best friend was in the Army during the Vietnam war. He said the one K ration NO ONE would eat, not even the enemy troops was ham and lima beans. They called them ham and mother-effers. I was fortunate enough to be stationed on a ship where our food was fresh when I was in the Coast Guard, so I truly feel for the young men and women stuck with nothing but MRE’s. I got out of the Coast Guard 37 years ago and a lot has changed obviously. Anyway, another great video and great sidearm. We can’t get that particular gun here in the People’s Republik of Kalifornia. Only law enforcement can get that particular gun. We can get older model Glocks, but not the newer ones. Anyway, thank you for another adventure and best wishes, God speed

Well at least the truck got a good cleaning on the way home. Looked like great fun. I do that kinda stuff all the time in my 1978 K5 Blazer 4wd. Cept I don't leave when it rains.

I enjoy these areas every chance I get. I enjoy how all of the roads connect in some way and take you to various states and Appalachian trail crossings.

As I watched this it was interesting hearing the grunt comment. I encounter that often in an area I visit. I visit it often but I can only make it so far before I start hearing the grunts. I've found other signs and may have had an encounter but it was very confusing and adrenaline filled. Pisgah is wild for sure.

Hi Luke! That is a nice truck men!!! That reminds me of my youth. My uncle was in the National Guard and my cousins & I used to go there and got on those trucks, Du and Half & the old American ARMY jeeps. Good memories men!!! Thank you though!

Great video. I have the same Swiss hatchet, it came dull and the head was a little loose due to drying out over time I believe. I submerged the head in linseed oil for a week to allow it to soak up the oil to swell the head, it worked well. I still think that truck is awesome and btw, I want that tent lol Thanks for sharing

Great video. I haven't seen a CUCV in years! They were using them when I first joined the USMC in 1990. I grew up in Hendersonville and work on Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. Seeing the mountains and woods is great. Coming home next week for a visit and cannot wait to see the mountains.
