I don't get that appreciation shit... No one literally no one except for rare exceptions like police or medical personnel when they save your life do they ever get thanked. This dude is an asshole, like too many people nowadays... He gets it rough from people so he gets an attitude and takes it out on others... and the cycle perpetuates.. Like he doesn't seem to think there's a problem with collecting garbage at 6am, among other things... he has zero self awareness. I mean shit we all want praise but what he does just isn't any more important than any other job in the grand scheme so why does he deserve it, when the rest of us don't.

Beautiful man. I am from Brooklyn. Well moved from Iraq to NY. Im half indian half Iraqi. My family actually moved to Florida after I was so bullied by OJs… went to public in Florida. Still I was bullied. Then my parents found church that would pay for private Christian school. And after first year. The school itself gave me free tuition. Most white Christians. But super nice to me. But after school, went back tp Brooklyn with my oldest sister. Went to westley community college. Then went back to Florida for University of Florida. Met my husband there.

It’s every country. But i do agree. To make the greatest city, most popular city on earth requires men like this. I actually did trash. Was a deputy sheriff in Duval. My husband convinced me to go through pharmacy school so I quit. My husband was military and at time we were poor af. While I was trying my best. Dollar tree food. But. We did math. Working for VA. My husband retires mil at 38. Gets JSO. I retire from VA also do blended retirement for JSO. So we both double dip, pay off our homes. Bring in 6 figures yearly at 65 no issue.

My dad was a garbage man in NYC for 30+ years and I currently work in sales for a private sanitation company in NYC. Sanitation services are soooo important in a big city and the guys who pick up the garbage tend to be super underappreciated. This episode was so awesome to listen to!! Freakin loved it. I worked as a garbage girl. Craziest thing is I worked garbage, but met my husband who was in Navy in manhattan during my dream job. Fyi. It was job during uni. Met my husband at down town frankos. I was embarrassed to say my job to him, but said the truth. He kept in contact. Moved in with him to become a deputy sheriff. I quit. Got accepted to pharmacy school surprisingly. Lived poor af. While my husband deployed. It took my 3 tries for pharmacy. Finally got into UF jax. Now we make decent. My husband is out of military. Now I’m paying back the favor being his sugar momma. While he uses his GI bill. But i do miss city work. Being a dep.

I love that Theo does these. I’m a native NY’er and we love our sanitation workers. It’s crazy how technical schools, civil service jobs pay more than 4-6 yr degrees. My husband went to tech school and he started at 6 figures and my 6 yr degree started nowhere near that.

My Dad was a garbage man, my 2 uncle's are still in the trucks. They had their own company for a while, then Waste Management bought them out and gave them jobs. They are going on 30 years with WM. They both run front loaders now. But I remember being a kid working with them in the summers as a thrower. Fun job hanging off the back of the truck, sucked some days but that's most jobs! I volunteer to pick up garbage around the city and our apartments. This was a real eye-opener. Sadly, bottles are not recycled. I really respect this guy for what he has done. This job is hazardous waste, ( think needles, foil with fentanyl, adult diapers with pooh poop on them, shards of glass, pee in water bottles, used condoms, etc etc). My granddaughter loves the garbage man, she greets him often. One time he even came back with a gift for her. You guys have one of those jobs where no one really notices until it starts backing up. I'm from the UK. I was a bin man at one point. It paid okay. I learned some things doing that. About society. Poverty and wastefulness. You are correct. I currently drive a recycle truck in the UK and when I do the poorer areas the amount of shit they buy is unbelievable. When I do the wealthier areas there is not even half as much to collect.

I have come to the realization (and most haven't figured it out) that it's not that poor people make bad decisions. It's in fact the opposite. People that consistently waste and make poor decisions become and stay poor. It's the same/opposite for rich people.

My papa was a trash/recycling man for 20+ years. He sprained his ankle when he first started and worked the rest of the day. He got stuck with glass one time and was bitten by a dog another time. He tore a tendon in his arm from lifting cans. He has issues with his foot from driving the truck. He didn’t eat well because he was always trying to be quick and get done with the route. He gave his body for that job. He made his own choices but I have the utmost respect for him. He had to retire from the job due to heart issues but is actually trying to take care of himself now. The average person probably doesn’t think much of a trash man but you have to remember that’s someone’s dad, uncle, brother… what ever. Labor jobs are no joke. There were good times though. Back in the day I remember he would hand out cards around the holidays because he got more money/gift cards that way. He used that money to buy groceries and what not throughout the year. One time he found me a brand new first gen iPod shuffle. I was thrilled! Thank you for this interview. Most people wouldn’t see the other side otherwise.

The fact this dude tips his guys makes him a great supervisor. I'm not a supervisor, but I take care of my crew like I am one, and in turn, they're happier workers and take orders better. I only buy lunch/dinner from time to time, but I've been contemplating giving them $100 each at some point and Christmas is the perfect time. Thanks for the idea. Edit: I'm a custodian for schools, so I can definitely relate to this guy. I was just saying how much I love my job though it's a job that is looked down upon.
