I love the texture of the highlights, especially on the belly scales. The brush strokes have a really "painterly" style that it seems people are afraid of embracing on youtube (which is strange to me, since we're painting with acrylics- why they don't just switch to oils for smooth blends I'll never understand). Anyway, awesome dragon!

I keep getting tempted to try a black dragon either in primarily the monochrome look with only the eyes of the dragon being a glow effect or to take the iridescent look like some black reptiles have.

I got three copies of this dragon, and both wings of all three of them have the ‘sand paper’ texture you spoke of, on the dorsal side of each wing. Examining the unpainted models under the light, it definitely appears to be an intentional part of the mould. Could produce some interesting results with a gentle dry brush.

Think its called reindeer moss. It's really cool that you paint reaper minis, not everyone can shell out champagne money to do a boones farm paint job. I've been hitting my box of shame and painting my buddies Shadows of Brimstone models for practice cause I'm scared to paint my limbo 75mm. Thankfully you and hobby cheating and njm are out there. The community rocks, I'm seeing constant improvement and you guys are mostly to blame; or deserve a large portion of the credit. (however you want phrase it😁) Thanks for being awesome

First rule of painting black dragon... refrain from using black... Abwahahaha! I love mini painting logic because it is far from logical yet it always pans out. Lol!

Re: The "sandpaper" texture on the wings. I'm not due to get Aganzarax until Bones 5.5 delivers, but I do have a couple of the other large dragons. On the big blue, there's a similar texture on the vanes of both wings, but on very close examination, it looks like a very faint attempt at a subtle "leather" texture. Could that have been it? Edit: Looks like the "Red" has the same thing on his wings.

Funny you say his face looks like a skull, that is actually the reason that black dragons are sometimes called "skull dragons" in D&D!

I would love to see your take on a white dragon! I painted one a few weeks ago and it was hard to deal with the boring white over dirty white over baby-blue white.... I now have a couple polar bears in my queue that I have been dreading to start because of it...

Great Choice, this reminds me of the colorization of our Florida gators in their habitat, with the exception of the bright stripe down the spine but, it works on your dragon. Thanks!

A lot of people were complaining that this guy was hard to put together with the tail and base connection leaving gaps. Did you have any issues with gap filling in assembly?

I had that problem, and needed to put the leg in boiling water and glued it while it was really rubbery, let it cool overnight, then filled in all the gaps with greenstuff. Also the wings are a pain, I recommend gluing one at a time

Great pint job! Does anyone have a good paint comparison chart for VMC to Reaper paints? I have a spreadsheet that’s decent but some of the colors appear to be way off. I use primarily reaper and it’s hard to match some colors, like the olive brown.

It makes sense that people emphasize on purple tones when they paint Black Dragons , i believe it is mentioned in the D&D lore that Black Dragons tend to get a purple hues in their scales as they grow older , an Ancient or really old Black Dragon would appear partially purple .

Question; if I don't have Dark Rubber, what would be a good approximation of that color? VMA Tyre Black, maybe? Or just a good dark gray? I have a Wizkids black dragon in my drawers of shame, and this gave me a lot of good ideas as to how to go about making it look interesting.

German Grey has a nice blue-green undertone and might work with this scheme. I use it a lot as a "black" that isn't actually black, and can easily be mixed to go darker or lighter.

It's an interesting color that I find hard to describe. It's an oddball warm dark grey. German Grey with something like Beige Brown added might get you something similar.

Perfect timing for this tutorial! On Tuesday I got a “young black dragon” model along with a few other dragon models to celebrate a recent preorder of Fizban’s dragon guide. Now I have excellent directions on how to paint the model while I wait for the book to arrive. Any chance you will do a silver or gold dragon in the near future?
