In this gripping documentary, we explore the sensational claims of Captain George Drevar, a sailor who supposedly encountered a gigantic sea serpent in 1875 while aboard his ship the Pauline, some 20 miles from Cape São Roque, Brazil. Remembered as a classic case of maritime cryptozoology, Drevar's legendary monster sighting impacted 19th century society to such an extent that he was forced to defend himself, and his claims, in court. He asserted he'd seen the Leviathan of myth... others asserted he was a madman. Today we explore the details of this fantastical paranormal case and consider what the enigmatic creature Drevar encountered might have been.

In my family there had been a Sea Captain that had sailed from about 1790 to about 1840, when my Auntie died the only thing I wanted from her house was the small boxwood chest of Drawers that was His. It was about about 2ft square and about a foot deep, it had about 40 to 60 small drawers that had been his sea chest (ie things he'd found at sea). In one of the lower drawers was a shark tooth (not fossilised but yellow with age) that was about 60mm on each side, which would have made the Shark absolutely huge (upto 30ft? or more). I didn't want to remove the tooth as it belonged with the chest. Tho unfortunately...the only thing the 'other' half of the family wanted was the chest. So alas I only got to marvel at the contents for an hour or so. In it was a typed up letter (so as not to cause any more damage to the hand written account) of him being shipwrecked as a cabin boy at about 13-14 and him and the Captain or second mate had managed to survive on a piece of wrecked boat for 9 days. These were Strong Strong Men who knew their minds, They were not beholden to flights of fancy...remember when they were at sea tuna were still regularly 12ft long...now we have decimated them to 3ft. I for one believe them...besides don't we still harp on 95% of the Sea still being unaccounted for?

Ah the old "I had evidence, but it's gone now" approach. Why didn't you take a picture of it to scale with anything? And...Tuna can still grow to massive sizes. Don't know where you got that they don't get big anymore from. As it is, anecdotal evidence is the weakest form of evidence for a reason. Memory is most certainly fallible so even if those men weren't prone to flights of fancy, they could still subconciously skew the facts. As for 95% of te ocean, while true it's also one of those things people CONSTANTLY used without the proper context. Most life in the ocean is concentrated in the first 200 to 1000 or so meters. Naturally we do get creatures that will migrate from the depths to the surface to feed, typically at night. The reason for this is most phytoplankton live at this depth because this is about as far as sunlight will penetrate. And phytoplankton is one of the fundamental bases of the ecosystem, most of the rings of the food chain will be found here as well. The only creatures that move between the depths are moving inbetween feeding locations. Some head up to feed on phytoplankton, others are moving up to feed on them. On rare occasion like the spermwhales and I think some of the beaked whales, you'll get creature moving down to feed. Some people say the bathypelagic layer is pretty dead, but it isn't and it's the part of the ocean layers that make up the bulk of the ocean. And we have found some weird creatures in it. The Giant Squid and colossal squids being prime examples.
@hatuletoh
@hatuletoh Жыл бұрын
I have a much lower degree of skepticism when it comes to stories involving the oceans than I would for those in other environments. Mostly because our knowledge of the oceans is so limited, but also because the men (and now women) who make their livings out there become experts on the environment, and are especially attuned to anything anomalous, since any weirdness on the water can be dangerous. And if you speak to anyone who has spent their life sailing, they always have at least one story about something they didn't understand and couldn't explain. Whether it's creatures or craft or lights or sounds--professional sea-goers invariably have experienced some strangeness. So a giant, whale-killing sea serpent doesn't sound all that improbable to me. After all, giant squid were entirely mythological until some large squid beaks were documented in the 19th century, and it wasnt until the 21st century that we actually captured photos of a live one.
@Legionmint7091
@Legionmint7091 Жыл бұрын
There is a possibility that what the sailors saw was a giant squid that can reach at least 12-13 meters (39-43 ft. ). Sperm whales are known to pray on giant squids and this could either have been an attack gone wrong or was simply misinterpreted by the crew. Giant squids have two longer tentacles that could be mistaken for a head and a tail.

The Serpent emerges frequently in Norse mythology. Jörmungandr was a Sea Serpent so big that it circled the world and would be misidentified by sailors as a landmass. Tales have been told of Saint Olaf in 1028 AD slaying a Sea Serpent in Valldal, Norway. The sightings and tales throughout history have tended to occur off the coast of Norway and Greenland.🤷🐍

Much nicer place to swim! No baby wipes or sewage hitting your in the face as you swim! This is why I have given up watching the bloody news! Not just because I can only focus on the positive outcome and not continue to be a part of the problem which is what happens when we focus our attention on either positive or negative situations! Well-being dramatically abounds in terms of the sun coming up every morning and we don’t have to pray for our hearts to keep beating and our skin to keep regenerating, but the more the media focus on the pockets of the planet where negative drama and experience is occurring and the more people focus their energy on it, the bigger that kind of experience will continue to grow! Just like what happened with covid! I was strongly guided to get rid of my tv at the beginning of covid and I believe that despite not having any vaccines and was considered crazy by my family for this but out of all my family and friends I was the only one that didn’t get covid! I was very excited when I received the notification for this video! Interesting, as usual... thank you! I was, however, a little perplexed that you didn't at least mention the fact that Giant/Colossal Squid is a now well-known favorite meal of Sperm Whales and surely could account for at least some of these sea serpent anecdotes told by extremely experienced sailors. It would make sense that witnessing a large whale battling to subdue, kill, and then eat a similarly large squid would be difficult for any onlookers (now or then) to decipher who was the prey and who was the predator. We've only proven these gargantuan squid's existence in the 21st century, and still, we have extremely little knowledge of how large they can get or if the largest among them are capable of predating on large sperm whales. So it seems to reason their 2 long tentacles and 8 arms could be seen as one entity. Making it difficult to differentiate if they are viewing one very long creature wrapped many times or many appendages attached to a single creature that is attempting to defend itself; or possibly even being the aggressor. Either way, it's very intriguing to ponder! What a curiously beautiful world we live in 🦑 🐋 💙

While I do agree with the trailing debris. Another for the potential explanation for a serpent being wrapped around the whale, it is possible for it also being a large Cephalopod like a Giant squid or giant pacific octopus latched on to the giant predator. The report of the Whale jumping out of the water with the “monster” still attached could be the whale taking the large cephalopod for the ride of its life trying to shake it off.

Don't think I have heard of this before. Absolutely fascinating video as usual Laura, the level of research + production values + amount of illustrations are way above average. Interesting how unusual a career and life George Drevar had even outside his encounters with sea monsters, even as his encounters with the Leviathan had a major impact upon the course of his life. Notable that one of the other officers aboard the ship had a slightly different recollection of the first Leviathan sighting. Any information about the possible identity of the dead sea serpent preserved in alcohol he had in his possession? Very curious regarding any possible leads on that case, would not be surprised if such important physical evidence vanished before examination by the relevant experts.

In the Jules Verne classic "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea", Captain Nemo's magnificent submarine the "Nautalis" was originally confused as a enormous cryptic sea monster. Although this great novel was a work of science fiction, and has nothing to do with the paranormal, could you somehow make reference to this in one of your future sea monster episodes? Many, many scholars have read this phenomenal work of great literature (as should you), and reflects the common mariner mindset of the late 18oo's. the story of the serpent swimming up to the ship as if mistaking it for a potential mate because of the boats size and paint pattern feels like such a distinctly real and believable animal behavior. that part of the account was so compelling, so familiar. it sounds so much like any other wild animal with its instinctual behaviors and ecological niche. i'm sure the stories of sea serpents attacking ships and wrapping its tentacles around it stems from the animal mistaking the vessel for a sperm whale. exactly like how surfers are often attacked by sharks that mistake them for seals. in some cases the serpent might even give up once realizing the thing is made of wood but by then the ship is damaged enough to sink, in other cases survived to tell the tale. it all checks out well with other human encounters with sea life. I don't really doubt the captain at all!

As Drevar's sightings remain far from the only ones claimed to have been made of so-called sea serpents, I see no reason whatsoever to doubt the legitimacy of his claims. He was, after all, backed up by his crewmen, and was by all accounts sane enough to know truth from fantasy. Honestly, if I were to witness such an extraordinary animal with my own eyes, I would probably become desperate to make people aware of it myself, if only to help keep people safe. We have numerous sightings of enormous serpentine animals in the waters along the Pacific coast of North America, where I live, every year, so the concept of sea serpents does not strike me as a laughing matter at all. The real question as I see it isn't "do they exist?" but rather, "why do people find it so difficult to accept that they exist?" We live in a world filled with incredible creatures, some of them very huge. Why shouldn't there be some form of great aquatic serpent or gigantic eel? I am confident that history will vindicate Drevar and all of the others who have sighted such creatures over the years.

I see no reason to doubt the account of the sea serpent made by Drevar. It is sheer arrogance to assume that our land-dwelling, air-breathing species is already in full possession of the entire taxonomy of the vast oceans. New discoveries will be made for many years to come. The serpent witnessed by Drevar and his crew reminds me strikingly of the Hook Island Sea Monster, because of Drevar's description of the animal's head being the widest part of its body. If you recall, the Hook Island creature had a serpentine body and an enormous head that made it somewhat resemble a tadpole. Though the Hook Island creature was only 30-40 feet in length, if memory serves, it could conceivably represent a juvenile of the species. Fascinating video altogether! I love your channel, and I thank you for your work! --N

What I find interesting about this story relates to a video that was captured and posted here on KZbin and has been shown on numerous paranormal channels. A couple down in Florida were just enjoying the day floating along in their boat when they saw something in the water that they described as looking "like a telephone pole". The "thing" was black and white or so it appeared in the video and it was believed to be attacking manatees in the area by coiling around them. The couple captured one attack where the "thing" appeared to wrap itself around one manatee. The couple did not know what it was but immediately opted to get out of the area. I wonder if this might be related to this story? Here is the link to that video kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZvTZJp5g956q9k

It's a theory, but never proven fact. Sperm whales do battle against giant squids, as sucker marks from squids' tentacles and arms do scar their skin, and oarfish have been seen by ppl who don't know of their existence and immediately assume "sea serpent". However, there are countless reports, some by military personnel, as well as surprisingly credible sources that describe animals out there that cannot be explained. Many, whom describe the same thing who are years and regions apart. A lot of modern day sea serpents are described as black with beige to white underbellies, and heads shaped like an otter's, an anaconda's, or a leopard seal's, and on rare occasions, a horse's. A very credible sea serpent video is the Sannibel Island monster video. It breaches the surface but isn't a whale, dolphin, shark, seal, manatee, or oar fish. Pretty clear, no tampering, animalistic behavior; pretty quick video, but one of the most unexplained.

The world is more than we can comprehend. Those who dismiss stories, out of hand, learn nothing of the fascinating world that we live in, a living world, dead to the minds of those who refuse to see, and refusing to see become blind through their own ignorance. Remember the giant squid was once thought to be a myth until it and the colossal squid were discovered to be real. I am not going to be surprised if there are other huge marine monsters we have yet to meet. There is a phenomenon in called deep see gigantism where undersea creatures grow to gigantic sizes. Perhaps there are new species of eel affected by this that may cause them to grow to extremely large sizes.

Right? Like, if it saw that small "head" that would be the end of one of their tentacles wrapped around the whale. He probs witnessed an adult giant squid vs Sperm Whale, and probably a younger one that it fuckin drowned lol

That's a good point your making so don't get me wrong when I say this. I would think that anyone being in the sea for a while would know what a squid would look like and would be able to tell if it was a squid or something else? I may be wrong here as you know there is always the odd person out there who may exaggerate things but the detail in the description doesn't really fit with a giant squid.. just something to think about it's unfortunate ad we will never know for sure what it was.

there used to be species of giant shell less turtles that existed not that long ago that some people think may still be around and explain sea monsters, max hawthorne who is a sea cryptid researcher thinks they may still exist, a turtle without a shell would look very reptilian and slightly serpentine since they are not that large under the shell and they would also look similar to the wingless asian dragons.

What’s silly to me is that people think they can say whether or not something exists in our oceans! With how little of it has been explored it just seems rather cocky to say “no that doesn’t exist and you’re nuts” .. ✌️😁
