I remember when this first aired, I was 8 years old and a diehard fan. I was seriously spooked when they showed us the NCC1701-D from the universe where the Borg had conquered The Federation. Props to Jonathan Frakes for delivering such a frightening delirious version of his character. I still get a haunted feeling when I reflect of this episode, due to the idea of that universe and the sight of one Enterprise being forced to destroy another. It made such a strong impression on me I don't think I can ever view this episode through objective eyes. This is definitely a permanent "4" in my book.

My favorite part of that (outside of the crazy beard on alternate Riker) is the crew member running around in the background, tending to exploding system panels. XD

Mirrors exactly my own experience. We only get to see the shaken and broken down Riker for a brief moment (which even enhances the haunting effect of it) but it had an impact on my younger self. To be honest, it's still quite disturbing to me.

Did you notice in one of the realities Data has blue eyes? It's random little details like that that makes this one of my favorites. Definitely makes it more rewatchable than others. By the way, thanks for making these retrospectives, Wes. I've been listening since season 2. It's become my favorite Trek podcast.

I did not notice the eyes! That's pretty good. I feel like there are a million different chances for things like this in the episode, glad to see the art department got a chance to be a little creative. Thanks for listening!

At the end of this episode they take Worf+Troi to the next level. Which I like but comes out of nowhere. Meanwhile in "Attached" two episodes ago they were afraid to commit Picard and Beverly. So strange.

That is awesome that your childhood friend is putting in time on the show. My best friend from high school was not a Trekkie but her mother was and we used to watch new episodes of deep space nine but I can't remember what episodes. My friend still has some of my Star Trek action figures a few of my Star Trek magazines. I don't think they even make that magazine any more but they used to

It's great to get a Worf-centric episode that doesn't revolve around his encounters with Klingon culture and politics. Episodes like this one definitely strengthen his character as something more than just "the alien crew member" or "that stiff Klingon guy", which is nice, because Worf has a much deeper and more complex personality to play with than that, and they have a very capable actor playing him in Michael Dorn. I hope you guys go on to do a DS9 podcast at some point, so you can examine the rest of his character arc. I can definitely see why they chose to bring him onto that less-serialised show as well, and it's probably my favourite Star Trek series partly due to his inclusion and treatment.

I always liked this episode, because it's kind of creepy and at the same time fascinating. Being in Worf's situation without initially knowing what is going on is really creepy, just as seeing what is going on in some parallel realities: Geordi dies, Picard died in "Best of Bost Worlds", the Borg are apparently conquering the Alpha Quadrant in one reality and of course: Wesley is back. ;) The fascinating part is seeing all these possibilities and it makes perfect sense that an episode like this appears in the very last season. Granted, the episode may appear like quite a bit of fan service, but I think it's without question solid enough on its own and watching this episode was equally interesting as it felt "rewarding" as a fan of the show. Seeing all these different Enterprises appear and hearing Data's calculation that the whole sector will be flooded with Enterprises in X hours was - again - quite disturbing (in a good way). :D I also liked the small details like Wesley mentioned that thousands of communication channels between all the Enterprises are currently flooding the sector -- it's not relevant at all, but it makes perfect sense and gives the overall crazy situation a bit more weight in terms of "realism". All that being said, I agree with Wes that the introduction of the Worf/Troi relationship comes too late. Jonathan Frakes (Riker) also briefly commented on this relationship during a convention panel, saying that he never understood this development and brushed it off by saying that it probably was "just something physical", which is equally funny and charming to me because the way Frakes said it made it seem like he really cared. :D The humour is also excellent and it's one of the big strengths of the Worf character. Worf's character is in general one of the big "winners" of the show in terms of development. And while the podcast often criticises the Klingons, I will defend them by saying that they are by far one of the most interesting races in the Star Trek universe. What makes them interesting to me is that unlike most other races in Star Trek, they actually have a history (reaching back to TOS and Kirk) and because they were once sworn enemies of the Federation for a long time but are now allies puts them in an interesting position. Yes, they are often over the top, but here's the beauty of it: they don't care and are just enjoying being themselves -- in fact, when they get drunk, tell their over-the-top legends ("Birthright Part 2") or sing their equally over-the-top Klingon songs and see you rolling your eyes, they will just laugh and sing even louder. :D Maybe it's just me, but that makes them very much likable to me. It's true that their code of honour and hunger for battle is often quite irritating from our perspectives, but it's a nice contrast to the Federation. Going into a bit of geek talk mode here: fans of Star Trek should realise that this (to us) "irrational" behaviour is mostly found among the younger hot-headed Klingons ("Heart of Glory"), while the older Klingons are more seasoned and actually care about long-term consequences. Episodes like "Sins of the Father" for example clearly showed that Klingons can indeed be caught up between real-life politics and their code of honour based on traditions and legends, which is really interesting. It's easy to see just the surface of Klingons because it is indeed very loud and aggressive, but there's more to it ("A Matter of Honor"). Thankfully, the writers of Deep Space Nine seemed to agree on this by taking an even closer look at them and developing them further. Back to "Parallels", here are some other random thoughts on the episode: - For some reason, I also always forget that Geordi is the reason why Worf shifts. - Am I the only one who was confused seeing Data with blue eyes in one of the realities ? (It's the long conversation between Worf and Data in engineering.) - Why was O'Brien not chief engineer in one of the parallel realities ? - Thanksfully, Riker's trombone in the background was mentioned in this podcast episode, because it deserves to be mentioned. xD - Don't forget: if you ever get lost in a parallel dimension: Earth 616 is ours (at least in the perspective of Marvel comics). - This is the only time we see a Cardassian in a Starfleet uniform. - Even though that Cardassian is only seen for a brief moment on the bridge of the Enterprise, they actually did the whole makeup on that actor. At first I thought they probably just put the actor of the Cardassian officer we see before on-screen in a different uniform and just sat him in the background, but no, they are indeed two different actors. Great episode, it's one I never skip and like to rewatch from time to time. That being said, it's obviously not an episode that works for newcomers to the show. 4/5

Just watched this one after a few years and i enjoyed it more then i thought i would , normally some of the Warf heavy episodes can be sometimes cringe , Its a good story and well acted by Dorn ...Was so funny when he was looking into the Bedroom when Troy went in there not realizing that she is his wife ..It was also cool seeing the alternate realities specially near the end of the episode ...Well paced too wasn't bored threw it ..

It always figures that it's Geordi's fault! But anyway, I think with all the Worfs, they really do exist and they are all just pushing each other forward. But then the Worf on the Borg-ish Enterprise I suppose dies, does that means one of the Worf's is dead? And this is, really very close to "Yesterday's Enterprise," with the time rifts and alternate characters. And there is a fanfic story explaining how the Borg Enterprise getting to that sector is explained. But that's ultra geekery I am, ahem, admitting too. Great cast yet again!

i liked seeing wesley there! it could have annoyed me but because they didn't bring attention to it, i felt it was just a nice little detail rather than fan service. i don't know why they didn't throw in denise crosby too. they could have just re-used an old comm line or something, like she replies off screen. save some money ya know?
