@@newmarsvolta that’s not accurate. While women do have their own roles during a pohiri , they are not limited to only that. There were female Chiefs with the highest honour within Iwi that went to sign for Te Tiriti, but was denied the right to sign by the Colonials, and so many iwi did not sign because of that rule. Also if you look now at which iwi still practise that type of tikanga (women having a less say / being in the kitchen and doing jobs in the background) you’ll find it is the iwi that are still heavily influenced by the church, e.g Ratana Pā or some marae down the east coast where Christ was brought a little later than the north.

Or at least translate it straight afterwards. We are not all Maori so we can't possibly all know the language. If you're not from that culture you're not obliged to learn it. It's a choice. The NZ official widely shared language is only English. It's great if people want to learn but not being forced on them.

@@1970brenz Well for maori it was forced to speak English and you're a racist . Newzealand was maori speaking before it was English and so you're statement is not correct the language is both English and maori as the treaty is between maori and Pakeha. Just blows me away how arrogant people like yourself can stoop so low as to comment that Newzealand maori have no right to speak their native tongue . You are cheeky disrespectful to all maori and anyone who speaks their own native tongue you're saying that they have no right to speak simply because you can't understand boo hoo 😢Imagine how maori felt when they were told to speak English and beaten for speaking maori and forced to speak English. James Meager's speech in part reads..."My family has never sought the limelight. This entrance into public life won't come easy for us. We are simple, straightforward people from a simple, straightforward part of the world. My dad is Ngāi Tahu, a freezing worker most of his life, a little Māori kid who was kicked out of school at 14 and who never told his parents, hiding in bedroom closets and spending afternoons down the river until he was old enough to convince his folks to let him go to work at 15. Until yesterday, he had never stepped foot in the North Island. His father, my grandfather, was a truck driver and a freezing worker, and my nana was a seamstress and a wool carder in Ashburton. Dad's a hard worker. He's a bloody hard worker. You can't stand on your feet for hours on end on the chain and in the boning room for 40 years without knowing what hard work looks like. Dad wasn't around much growing up and that's put a strain on our relationship, which has never healed and which may never heal, but I don't blame him for that. We are products of our upbringing. We navigate through the world with the tools that we are given, and sometimes those tools just aren't fit for purpose. Forgiveness and redemption are words that are often overused, but they are words that are fit for this moment. We should never judge people based on who they once were. We can only judge someone on who they are today compared to who they were yesterday. And I know my dad is making up for lost time. I'm so glad he's here today and I love him dearly.

Every other ethnic New Zealander is expected to manage to do this... to stand on their own feet and not expect the taxpayer to always be giving them more and more financial aid - you make Maori sound like retarded children and in need of pity as if they are incapable of looking after themselves. The Maori I have known all my life would cringe at the way you paint them... they are self reliant, proud and strong as a people, inventive and anything but the pathetic way you portray them - as being incapable of managing their own lives... Instead of demanding more handouts and financial assistance for them... help them find the strength that they once had and get back their ability to live off the land, set up their own trading businesses grab all the education they can... that is education that will lead them to a good income to support their families... e.g. we are desperate for all building and trade skills - these are skills that will set up small business for them. Maori are great artists and craftsmen also. Most of all get back to traditional eating which would work wonders on their health outcomes. You and your attitude is a cause of your people's plight - you are holding your people down with the way you think and expect so little of them... the old saying is people will live up to the expectations you have of them... and you have zero expectations for your people... Maori elite should be made to stump up to help their people.. treaty settlements were always meant for all Maori not just a handful on the top of the heap who have lived very fat lives until now... so time they looked after the people with the settlements that were meant for them!
