Show me in History when you can change a Contract/Covenant/Treaty 186 years later ... The Treaty was Made between the United Maori Chiefs (1835) and The Crown NOT the Existing Government in 1840 .They don't need The *Te Titiri O Waitangi* to say People have Equal Rights ..Equal rights to All Should be already in place. The Principles of the Treaty should have been Stated in 1975 when the Labour party under David Lange Introduced the ( *The Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975* ) 135 years after the Treaty was Signed. At the time of the signing of the treaty there were over 200.000 maori living thru out nz opposed to 6 -7000 pakeha. Maori to that date were extensively trading with europe, america, australia and england. They knew more pakeha coming was inevitable and had seen it for themselves. Us Maori had not lost the war as they didnt start ramping up til after the treaty signing because pakeha in collusion with the crown continually broke the treaty thru confiscating land, breaking contracts and erradicating large portions of maori. The Treaty is a binding legal document signed under crown law and not as you put it an understanding relevant to the 1800s.This document is so well written by (the dumb natives) that changing the law is the only way they can break it. The treaty interpretation was altered by the crown so as to be more to the queens liking. Indigenous people the world over have been battered into submission and we refuse to join them. The reason many protesters or Maori didnt bother to read the bill because it is just another attempt to circumnavigate the treaty. Ps How Many kiwis commenting on this page have read the real treaty. there is ignorance on both sides mate. the Crown has yet to honour bugger all in the original treaty while we are expected to roll over for a new one. That’s because it is currently accepted by the Supreme Court that sovereignty (or the right to make binding laws in New Zealand) lies with Parliament only. Only laws passed by Parliament are legally enforceable and the present view is that the Treaty pre-dated the transfer of sovereignty to Parliament. That means the Treaty itself is unlikely to be legally enforceable in any New Zealand court at the present time. Also, the Treaty was originally written in English - not by (the dumb natives) but by William Hobson with the help of his secretary, James Freeman, and British Resident James Busby. It was then rather shoddily translated to Māori - an inaccurate translation that's at the core of all the arguments we're seeing today. And, no, the treaty interpretation was not altered by the crown. That was done by the introduction of "principles" and the concept of "partnership" by the Waitangi Tribunal and the Court of Appeal back in the 1970s to 80s. Those alterations were never part of the original Treaty.
