Same for the 14 lane expressway (now part of Meerut Expressway) from Delhi to Dasna. It was a 2 lane road arlt some points and 4 lane at others and unauthorised colonies all around it. The road was proposed by Atal Bihari govt during the end of its tenure. It remained on paper for the next 10 years of UPA before being revived by Mr Gadkari and now it's such a relief to use that road.

All credit goes to Devendra Fadnavis and Eknath Shinde. When Fadnavis was the CM, Eknath Shinde was his PWD minister, and both of them managed to get this project going against all odds. The only reason why the project didn't stop during the dark days of the MVA, was that Shinde became the urban development minister.

​@@pushpindersingh1819 producing children is the reason we came to a place where Environment has become polluted. More people need more housing, more land for agriculture. How about you give up your farms and plant trees in place, because agriculture is literally the leading cause of deforestation throughout history. The reason Haryana and Punjab have around 3-4% forest area. Building Infra solves the problem by making sure cities become viable and livable. So, that housing can be solved vertically, instead of taking up more space spatially.

These projects should have been completed ages ago. While Indira Gandhi often escapes criticism, it is important to acknowledge her role in hindering India's development. Nehru actually had a 4% growth rate. Nehruvian Socialism turned into Government overreach in the Indira era. To secure her son's future, Sonia Gandhi fed the UPA 2 to the dogs. Congress has missed its chance.

Please, it's only fair to call it Atal Setu. Mandir+Development has been the hallmark of the Modi decade. Congress had this project stuck in the "Jayanti tax". Truth be told, Congress had its CHANCE. It was poor in delivery and even poorer in marketing. UPA 2 really had nothing to show and under Rahul, it has NO dreams to sell.

Shekhar's reporting is deep, factual and vivid. Problem of this 'Lutyenian' is in his narrative, a desparate attempt to credit & save grace for his masters - the Congress. He credits many concepts of these projects to Congress but admits they never took off during their long regime. He also avoids direct blame on the erstwhile Shiv Sena's role in creating hurdles to achieve their corrupt means. By that you lose credibility, Shekhar The true credit goes to Devendra Fadnavis government, which you don't even mention!!!

He was charismatic. Modi is good in it's own way and that's what India reads right now but Nehru did a lot of right things in his time. Nehru's unchallenged mandate allowed him to lay the foundations of Nation Building. Without that, India wouldn't have survived the separatism and insurgencies it faced in 1960s. Both Pakistan and Bangladesh, much smaller nations than India and way less diverse fell for military dictatorships. Pakistanis are still confused with their identities. Those are basic problems. Without solving those we couldn't have thought of building infra. Same goes for Indira. Infact, Indira was very similar to Modi in many ways.

Indians do NOT need ideas, all Indians are smart intelligent. India's problem is EXECUTION due to bureaucracy, politics, corruption, infighting due to jealousy or who gets the credit, lack of organization & long-term foresight etc. More Credit & Congratulations should be given in India to people who get stuff done/ executed - which in this case was the BJP & how it drives the Bureaucracy & these 4 letter State departments. The irony of Environmentalists crying about falmingos on the Mumbai side of MTHL is that the area sits right at the mouth of HPCL refinery. That is one of the most polluted areas of Mumbai. None of these Environmentalists opposed the expansion of that refinery and extension of oil pipeline further into the wetlands. But if it's a project that benefits everyone, environmentalists have all the objections of the world.

Length of Rajiv Gandhi sea link 5.6km toll for one way car Rs85 so for every km toll on sea link is Rs 15, Length of Atal setu 22km toll for one way car Rs250 so for every km toll on Atal setu is Rs 11, Now we should decide which bridge is costlier.

The REAL HERO of the transformation of Mumbai underway is Devendra Fadnavis! He does not get enough credit. Mumbai MMR lagged behind Delhi NCR for 20 years (1995-2015) till he came. As many as 12 metro lines all at once, finally navi mumbai airport, new Vashi bridge, MTHL, new coastal road, SRA & MHADA buildings. Maharashtra n its people do not value the contribution the man has done in JUST 5 years of Govt. which previous 20 years could not achieve. The modus operandi of other parties is to get votes of rural Maharashtra n then sit in Mumbai n fill their coffers with the money she has, nothing else. FADNAVIS FTW!

Metro system in Mumbai...projects that earlier govts ...NCP, Congress, Shiv Sena used it as a way to loot. They have made the size of the roads even smaller, caused decades of struggle and distress for travellers to go from one place to another..simply horrible !! Surely not the way infra investment should be spent !!! The toll collection for the Mumbai-Pune should have been automated long ago...India is known for IT services and yet automation has not been introduced. The reason : manual operation allows parties like Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena to siphon the funds collected at the toll gate !! If that was done Mumbai could have been like Singapore. Big cities development, Railways and highways infrastructure is the drivers of growth, these projects should not be prolonging, Bangalore suburban railway conceived during 90s and started during 2023, though revived during 2017, but due to state governments apathy and negligence it was delayed, Same with Metro, slow progress.

Thanks to the Print for highlighting the entire story and not just brag about the bridge. The question is to be asked why NDA is winning everywhere? Especially the so called COW BELT? Or Hindi heartland?? Well looking at the construction and infrastructure projects by current government, be it Trans Harbor line, Mumbai Metro, Coastal road, Missing link on Mumbai Pune Highway, to Ram Mandir, to Kashi Corridor, To Mahakal Corridor, To Samruddhi Marg, Mumbai Delhi Highway, Bangalore to Mysore expressway, Delhi Dehradun, western and eastern freight corridor, Raipur Vijaywada Highway, Statue of unity, Shivaji Maharaj statue in Mumbai and thousands of such projects.... Do we have any doubt about the previous governments intentions?? Especially looking at the infrastructure projects nearing our borders like roads on the eastern front with China, India to thiland highway or on Western front the Jamnagar Amritsar Highway... It is very clear that UPA and earlier Congress government was rather working under contract with China or something else to be what we are today.... Thanks for having a bright and powerful NDA government and we are sure we will have them for a couple of more decades to reach a place we deserve...

Re Metro including the Economist article. The issue is with the last mile infra and policies. Take London as an example, the mayors role was finally given power about 20 years ago. It has implemented congestion charging, dedicated bus lanes etc which have made it worth living without a car. Till Indian cities have empowered local government that incentivises public transport things will not improve. In London in most cases it's faster and cheaper to use public transport. So most people either don't have cars or use it for weekend stuff but not for office commutes. It's also no surprise that Delhi being a city state is the closest India has to a local government and therefore has the best infrastructure.

Big ticket infra.. and big toll vasooli. Almost 11-12 rupee/km and for oversized vehicle upto 75-78 rupee/km. This is 22 km bridge which is reducing point to point distance by 20 km and traffic snarls. But this cost is huge in long run and daily commuters.

In Congress & NCP govt there was infighting & so infrastructure projects were delayed & derailed is simplification of the problem. The infighting for funds was the real cause besides the electorate of both the parties is mostly rural Maharashtra & therefore both the parties were not interested in development of cities specially Mumbai, Pune , Nasik were their candidates rarely won election.
