He changed his style as he got older. At this point he'd added in some of his spoken word dissection of the English language and slang. Nobody says you have to like it. I'm sorry but... am I going crazy? I've watched a good portion of George Carlin's shows from the start up until 2008 and... I can tell you for a fact there's no such thing as "Carlin rants for an hour and no jokes". Every 2-5 minutes he either cracks a joke or explain something in a humorous way. Hell, just watch the Religion is Bullshit bit and see how he's point of "babble and then applause" is completely destroyed by the fact that the people are CONSTANTLY LAUGHING. And that's just one bit. In fact, I've laughed harder at Carlin's more recent (90s - 00s) "rants" when he was making a thoughtful critique of current events while keeping the flow with CONSTANT JOKES. Carlin's older material, although still great, was a bit too quick, high energy and impulsive. Most of the time (most, not all) the jokes were stand-up at local club quality, funny but no real reason or meaning to them, just quick stabs for quick laugh.

Ant is reaching sooooo badly in this bit. I get what he's trying to say about the preachy stuff, but old Carlin was way more thought provoking, funny and savage than young Carlin. Even his shittiest material is more relevant than Ant's tired black joke/ass backwards political talk. Ant's only useful when bantering with Jimmy Norton, which was when he was at his funniest. Besides, that Carlin bit of memorizing those rhymes only lasted less than 5 minutes out of his entire special. Big deal. They cherry picked his preachy political parts of the special, when there were plenty of actual jokes outside of that.

25:10 for the Burr calling out hack. But yeah Carlin did like 20 albums. The one after "Life is Worth Losing", called "It's Bad For Ya" was a little better received, as he got some flak for the nihilistic tone of "Life is Worth Losing". In any case, I like everything he ever did, and generally agree with Bill in this clip, at least over O&A. Edit: and yeah, Anthony's show isn't near as good as O&A was, same with Jim and Sam. Fucking sad what happened to this show.

I get why some people might dislike the bit they played here, but I actually loved it. Yeah it's a bit poetic, but that's the idea. Carlin was always into language. Most of his earlier themes revolved around language, and he never stopped doing that. So here, he isn't just talking about the peculiarities of the things people say, but he's demonstrating it by reciting the shit he wrote. It's not for everybody, ok, but cut him some slack. Try writing for once, write some rhythmic patterns, and try to say something meaningful; see how well you do. That's the point; it's showcasing his linguistic skills, and I can appreciate that. It doesn't have to be funny, the main point is to try and produce something that is linguistically clever, but still makes some kind of sense. It is why Eminem is considered a great lyricist; because he has amazing rhyming skills, but still manages to actually say some shit that's worth listening to. That's what Carlin is doing in that bit, and I really don't mind that it's not super funny. I do agree with Ant, however, that towards the end, Carlin came off as a bitter old man. He managed to make it funny most of the time, but there were definitely moments during his last shows where I felt like he was just a too angry, and I never liked that. I do respect Ant's opinion as well, because Ant is one of the funniest guys I've ever heard. But he was being too harsh on Carlin.

I find that the people who accuse Carlin of being "bitter" are incapable of facing the truth. Really now...whose point of view best reflects reality? Yours or his?
@XaeeD
@XaeeD 6 жыл бұрын
That makes no sense. What are you even trying to say? One's perspective on life is completely subjective, but people notice it when others are bitter. You can be critical all you want, but you can do it without the anger. Sometimes, you have to be angry, that's certainly true, but I got the feeling that Carlin, towards the end, was indeed bitter. In some of his material at least, and its presentation. I can't comment on his personal life. What's wrong with that observation? Am I not facing the truth? What truth would that be? And truth according to who? And what exactly is reality anyway? Since it's all subjective and based on personal experiences, I can say whatever I want. My views are a better presentation of reality than Carlin's, yes. What else? Would you like me to say that Carlin's view of the world was truer than mine is? It's not, not from my point of view at least. Or would you say that your own sense of the world is inferior to Carlin's? Or do you mean something specific? Because you made a very vague claim about it. Do you own objective reality, so that you can compare people's opinions and views and see which one's closer to the truth? Cause if you don't, then what makes you say that Carlin's views are truer than mine? All I said was that Carlin was bitter, which is an opinion. Is that the criterion? If someone's angry, and some other calls him bitter for it, does that automatically mean that the latter's view of reality is inferior to the former's?

To borrow the words of someone else on this thread, Carlin was the LSD of comedians- not only did he hit you with good real content, but the way he did it was an actual performance. Shit that guy performed his ass off. He was alive on stage when a lot of comics stumble around the stage and putz around. This guy was a stage animal. It was like watching a regular good pitcher pitch vs watching Randy Johnson pitch- that guy brought pitching to life, there was no boring game he played in. Not a lot of people enjoy it but his prose and approach were what made Carlin great- he'd use an amalgamation of catch phrases around a topic to critique they way we talk, the way we talk about a topic, and would then dip into the content and then back out again. He used every part of the joke buffalo.

The problem is that O and A have a small idea of what comedy must be and the next issue is that they label Carlin a comic. Carlin was a philosophical comedian and a writer. Labeled the “thinking mans comedian” and it couldn’t be more true. From my teenage years until this day I’ve never listened to Carlin with an expectation to laugh a lot. I listened to learn and think and laugh occasionally. At no point have I ever been bored listening to Carlin. If you’re not laughing while hearing him, you should be thinking.
