I was a Marine Infantryman, and atleast in my unit, FFDP was considered something tryhards and POGs listened to. Military units are hugeley diverse, so there really wasn't any one genre everybody listened to, but as for metal Lamb of God was pretty popular among the grunts who liked metal. The fact they were anti-war didn't really bother us. War IS fuckin stupid, and we wanted to go home.

Those Millionaires songs slap. Unironically, there’s something to be said about trashy party music. Actually, any tunes you can throw on the aux while driving with a group of friends to a club, show, whatever that have a fun vibe will always rule over elitist musicality. The problem for a lot of gatekeepers and highly technically accomplished musicians and bands is they see anyone with more success as a threat or a joke at times. Not to say creating well crafted tunes with extreme musicianship isn’t to be encouraged but something a normie can bang their head to, without thinking about how perfectly executed the 2 triggered kicks at 240 bpm or 16th note sweeps mixed with tapping will always be more successful. I don’t hate any of these bands, and I see why they had some success. I liked your take on factions and how aligning to a group helps build a fan base. Great content as always. Thanks man!

Yeah I played in a band where everyone but me liked FFDP so it got forced my down my throat a lot which makes me resent them a little more than I should. That being said I was never impressed by their image its BEYOND cheesy/cringey and the AA BB/AB AB rhyme schemes are just way too grade-school poetry for me and is ultimately what prevents me from taking them seriously. But I do really appreciate what they do for the troops. That will always be something i can admire.
@PUNKF0014 жыл бұрын
The thing that annoys me the most is the extremely basic “tough guy” lyrics, image and attitude. Being ex military makes them more cringey too. Its like their songs are written by the people that say stuff like “you dont wanna piss me off” and comment on stuff saying stuff like “If i woz there i wud av knocked im out” Those people.

As a fellow MBA recipient who loves metal, I enjoy your take on different bands from a business and marketing (i.e. target audience) perspective. This is a pretty clever idea for a series. I also love sociology, media, and marketing when it comes to talking about class. I’d love to hear about the rise and fall of industrial
@ConvincingPeople4 жыл бұрын
Sean Gardner The thing about the rise and fall of industrial music to me is it would be more like a series of rises and falls across a few different but related subgenres. Like, with the old-school bands, you can chart the rise from the Prostitution exhibit at the ICA to the peak with Throbbing Gristle's final concert in Los Angeles and the "fall" with Cabaret Voltaire turning into a full-on synth pop band and Peter Christopherson leaving Psychic TV to form Coil, but that's a completely separate narrative from the mainstream influence of electro-industrial/EBM or industrial metal.

@EagDesert4 жыл бұрын
I was into Design The Skyline's debut, as I've always been into the spaz-core niche and anything that's just really out-there. So it frustrated me when the Internet mobbed them with hate. The band took all of that bashing to heart, and kinda watered themselves down to a more standard metalcore sound later on. Should have just did what the fuck they wanted and owned all the hate. The people that bashed them mostly had no clue what they were hearing, and probably never even heard of Dillinger Escape Plan.
@EdmundKempersDartboard4 жыл бұрын
Victory screwed them releasing that song as their first single. They really do have some good tracks.
@SpookySkeleton7384 жыл бұрын
Honestly for me it wasn't so much the composition itself as it was the production on the track. Just really flat and overproduced sounding like everything was played by robots while one of them malfunctioned in the corner (the random gameboy noises really didn't help). It's pretty dumb to even put them in the same ballpark as Dillinger, there's a reason nobody was writing hit-pieces on Calculating Infinity and that's because Dillinger did it right the first time.

Whether it's a conscious decision or not, I feel like FFDP has gone from a band that those bro-metal guys liked with some generic tough guy lyrics, to actually becoming the whole "Kyle" meme as a physical and audible embodiment. They're metal/hard rock for your average WalMart-goer. As for Design the Skyline, if their latest material is what they would've introduced themselves with, they might have actually went somewhere. Instead it felt like they took the "cringier" aspects of Asking Alexandria and Attack Attack, and turned it up to 11. Awesome video though, man.
