I was a Marine Infantryman, and atleast in my unit, FFDP was considered something tryhards and POGs listened to. Military units are hugeley diverse, so there really wasn't any one genre everybody listened to, but as for metal Lamb of God was pretty popular among the grunts who liked metal. The fact they were anti-war didn't really bother us. War IS fuckin stupid, and we wanted to go home.

Former 11B (Army infantry for those that aren't familiar). I honestly never heard of FFDP until the newer guys started coming in after deployment in 07-08. But like the original comment, my unit listened to pretty much everything. Among the metal heads, it was mostly Death and similar bands. I was always more partial to 80s stuff like Suicidal tendencies, metallica, iron maiden. The bro metal of my generation in the military was disturbed.

The Millionaires bring back so many memories from parties in high school lol! They were fun, trashy and symbolized a crazy party atmosphere that a lot of teen girls are secretly after- especially at a time when it was still pretty taboo for female artists to be so explicit about sex, drinking and drugs. Also, I feel like if they were still around today, their music would be viral on TikTok.

Those Millionaires songs slap. Unironically, there’s something to be said about trashy party music. Actually, any tunes you can throw on the aux while driving with a group of friends to a club, show, whatever that have a fun vibe will always rule over elitist musicality. The problem for a lot of gatekeepers and highly technically accomplished musicians and bands is they see anyone with more success as a threat or a joke at times. Not to say creating well crafted tunes with extreme musicianship isn’t to be encouraged but something a normie can bang their head to, without thinking about how perfectly executed the 2 triggered kicks at 240 bpm or 16th note sweeps mixed with tapping will always be more successful. I don’t hate any of these bands, and I see why they had some success. I liked your take on factions and how aligning to a group helps build a fan base. Great content as always. Thanks man!

The American metal culture has become extremely political and 5FDP falls on the wrong side of it Also 5FDP was very popular with members of the military long before they started marketing towards that crowd because it's the type of music that you want to listen to when your pumped up this idea that they used the military to ride their way to fame is retarded they just noticed that those were the people who more often than not enjoyed their stuff while everyone else was shitting on them so they said fuck it and gave their actual fans what they wanted I love them but I'm exactly what you'd think their American fan base looks like I dip I drink whiskey I love guns I'm a big bald bearded white country boy who grew up on bands like Pantera and when I was living in Cali it was made very clear that guys like me weren't welcome in the more normal metal community so when someone did something different I went that way and this is a very common theme with 5FDP fans ... Lots of metal misfits who don't fit in with the typical left leaning crowd

Being a veteran FFDP was so over played I couldn’t escape that derivative music every song sounded the same. They became an industry constructed band after their first album. And yes the dudes in the military that love this band are typically names like johnathan or Kyle that are so full of red white and blue that would fight you if you didn’t love FFDP. I hate the band. Sean Gardner The thing about the rise and fall of industrial music to me is it would be more like a series of rises and falls across a few different but related subgenres. Like, with the old-school bands, you can chart the rise from the Prostitution exhibit at the ICA to the peak with Throbbing Gristle's final concert in Los Angeles and the "fall" with Cabaret Voltaire turning into a full-on synth pop band and Peter Christopherson leaving Psychic TV to form Coil, but that's a completely separate narrative from the mainstream influence of electro-industrial/EBM or industrial metal.

They're metal/hard rock for your average WalMart-goer. As for Design the Skyline, if their latest material is what they would've introduced themselves with, they might have actually went somewhere. Instead it felt like they took the "cringier" aspects of Asking Alexandria and Attack Attack, and turned it up to 11. Awesome video though, man. Do a video covering mathcore. Bands such as The Fall of Troy, Protest The Hero, Chiodos, Dance Gavin Dance, Periphery. I’m curious to see where these bands got their influence from and I would like to see your take on it.

Will Murrin I wouldn't call most of those bands mathcore at all, personally, with Periphery *definitely* being a whole different style of music; that said... he's touched on the earlier waves of mathcore in his videos on metalcore (the bit about "Deadguycore") and here with Design the Skyline-bad example for sure, but relevant to the discussion-but a fuller video encompassing the key early players like Converge and Botch moving forward to more modern bands incorporating elements of that style would be neat.

I wish I could go on about my hate, as a military veteran, of FFDP, but I think you summed up what I would pretty much say. It angered me that they deliberately pander to a demographic I don't identify with: red state, Trump-voting, borderline (or just blatantly) racist angry white men. Sure I served with scores of them, but when this demographic was Pantera'ing it up, I was Earth Crisis'ing.
