Hi! Thank you for another interesting video. Glad that you have included treats for our furry friends. I have not read all the comments, but I wanted to add something. I once belonged to a dogs treats group and they always stressed that any meat that was going to be dehydrated raw for pets had to be deep frozen for at least a week to kill parasites. Also, after the raw meat treats have been dehydrated, and depending on the protein used, they had to be "oven blasted" for 5 minutes at 150C in order to kill bacteria harmful to humans handling the treats. Keep dehydrating!! :)

Thank you Darcy for these recipes! It looks like Shelby really like your treats! This is so much better to do your own treats, you can make them to your dog’s taste or needs… and it costs a lot less than bought at the store. Unfortunately for us, we lost our beautiful furry friend Kimo over three years ago, I know hw would have loced them. Once I started making his dog cookies, he did not want any others… sometimes friends of mine wanted to give him their dog cookies or treats, but if they came from the store, hexwould not eat them. So I would make a batch every second weeks and freeze them… even when we went camping with him, they were on his list. 😊 I will share your video with my friends, I really like your videos, they are cery informative as well. Thank you again!

Love this idea!!! I just got a puppy so it's a timely one!! I used to make jerky all the time for my family and I discovered a little secret that works amazingly well. Go to your deli counter at the grocery store and have them slice chicken or beef or whatever fairly thin, not shaved, just thin. This meat is already pre-cooked. Take it home, marinate it, then dehydrate for awesome jerky!

I dehydrate deli meat for myself frequently. I do try to find lower sodium cuts because the salt content can be very highly concentrated once the meat is dry. I wouldn't use it as dog treats due to the high salt. But they do get really crispy and tasty.

Thank you so much for this. . . . I've been cooking chicken and mixing it (in my stand mixer) with sweet potatoes or other dog-safe foods for my dog now that he's older and beginning to have joint issues. However, I didn't think of adding turmeric and pepper for him, I take turmeric myself (duh!) - I also hadn't yet thought of dehydrating these for him, I've been freezing them either in muffin pans or just in mounds on a cookie sheet. Haha! Enjoyed the Soylent Green reference 😆 Okay - now to finish watching the video!

I've never occur to me to make doggy treats such as sweet potatoes and chicken livers. I'm going to make some chicken liver this weekend for my three doberman dogs. I've been giving them sliced hot dogs instead of store bought treats. After a few years back there was a major call back on milk bones treats it was founded that it was laced with poison. Every since then I have given them sliced hot dogs. They of course loved them. I felt a little more at ease to do this . Now after watching your video on dog treats I am changing things up for them. I have been watching your channel for three years and love your content. Keep up the good work in providing awesome information to improve our lives with great saving tips. God Bless.

We don't have a dehydrator. We tried oven drying/cooking, but it went long. We have an outdoor wood burning adobe oven, so we use it and because we can get the temperature much higher than an kitchen oven, it doesn't take any time at all, plus it gives the meat a smoky flavor. We are lucky the dog (going to be around 20 y.o.-- being a rescue, the vets guesstimate) isn't picky and will eat anything. Our vets (three in our tri-state area) nixed turmeric and pepper, so we no longer use it. As per our vets we do a mix of raw and cooked diet.

Thank you Darcy for another great video. My dog is elderly and has a lot of teeth missing. Do you think I could dehydrate sweet potatoes but dehydrate them to where they are slightly chewy? I love the ideal of making her treats instead of the ones you buy. I've had to start buying the chewier ones and to me they smell and look disgusting. She just gets a tiny bit of one treat at a time. Thanks Darcy, and your dad's dog is adorable. My dad moved in with me after my mom passed away and looking back it was one of the sweetest times in my life. I've been watching your channel for a couple years. I bought my dehydrator at Menards for around $35. I have used it a ton and I love it. Safe food handling recommends it. But you can also put it into an oven at 250F to blast for about 15 min to get rid of any bacterial issues. Dehydrators don't always heat to a consistent 160F, which is where the concern comes -thus the recommendation.

Couple drops of the stinky fish sauce and they think it's wonderful..hahaha. I can't give you an answer on that because I'm not a vet - and you would want to speak to your vet or a qualified pet nutritionist. It's dehydrated and they would need a lot of water support for it. I would freeze it or freeze dry it before I'd dry it, especially if it contains any protein at all.

Wow that is so awesome, I just got a bag of these 2 ingredients yesterday and our dog loved them but they are pretty expensive! I don’t have a dehumidifier so can I air fry?? Thanks for the video

Dehydrator is what you mean, and if your air fryer has a dehydrating function, yes. Otherwise, you're just cooking them - which your pup may love anyway.

Hello Darcy! This question is not about the dog treats, but about the DH Trays. The "book" says to "avoid scratching" the DH to put the trays in "smooth side" down. I wasn't too positive about which side they were talking about, but I see that you are loading the trays with the "lip" side down and the mesh side up. Is that what they meant? It made more sense to me to so it the other way since that gives you an "edge" to push your food against and contain it from spilling over, but perhaps my thinking is not correct. Can you confirm the correct direction of the trays? for me?
@ThePurposefulPantry
@ThePurposefulPantry Жыл бұрын
Think of the trays with rails - the rails go into the grooves of the machine, not the side that has the mesh.

Oh Darcy, I have just found you and I just dearly love you thank you so much for your videos. I just wondered if there was any difference in the one that you cooked and one that was raw as to which one she preferred or if she even made a difference

For the sweet potatoes? She prefers cooked, but she'd much rather have the chicken altogether.

My dog loves some treats from swanson vitamins called 'brewer's yeast formula'. The milk bones I have been feeding her are getting difficult to find so I am looking for alternatives. I have some of the non-fortified brewers yeast and think I might try to make this with some of the yeast in it.

I was wondering, if I cook the chicken in the oven at 350 degrees just until done and then slice into thin pieces and dehydrate until completely dry will that decrease or even kill off the harmful germs? I saw another channel who said to "flash heat" chicken and any meats that might contain harmful germs for just a few minutes at the end of dehydration to kill germs and/or harmful bacteria. I am new to dehydrating and have no clue if this would work or not. What are your thoughts on this? Don't worry, I am not going to hold anyone accountable for my dog's health but myself. I am just curious as too whether or not cooked chicken dehydrated would be palatable. I am thinking my dog would like her treats prepared this way.
@ThePurposefulPantry
@ThePurposefulPantry Жыл бұрын
Yep - it's what I said, too - 250F oven for 10-15 min after will do the same thing. I prefer it to cooking at 350 because that can dry out the meat in not a good way. But some of the safer dehydrating tips from the safe preservation NCHFP recommend cooking first. It's up to you. It's actually not your dog's health that is the issue - their gut is different than ours. You are the one handling the meat - so doing that flash at the end is protecting you, not your pup.

I just opened up my first dehydrator, threw in some thin straps of beef and pork for my pup. The recipe book says 6hrs or until done but I have one question.if it's not dry tonight before bed can put it back in in the morning to dry more? Do I put it in the fridge over night?
