I have a Polar H10 and I wear a Polar FT4 (watch) that receives the signal and I download the recorded data to Polar Beat app on my iPhone 11. Consistently my FT4 shows I burn more calories than my Polar Beat app even though the duration, Max HR and Average HR a the same (or close to the same). Any ideas why that would be?

This is great! A meticulous data scientist finds useful research about heart rate devices and summarises it for us. I am especially pleased that the H10 performs so well, as I bought one on Rob's recommendation. I also got a Polar Verity Sense, and this compares very closely with the H10 and is very useful for long cycling trips. This idea of Rob's to review research in his inimitable way is very welcome!

Thanks for the great video! I use my Polar H10 mostly in football sessions, i sometimes found it uncomfortable due to phisical contact, it also made breathing a little harder if i tighten it too much to avoid slipping. Then i tried to put it on my abdomen area, it gives a surprisingly consistent result compare to putting on the chest. I wonder if you are intrested in testing the actual accuracy diff of the H10 on various locations on the torso or even on legs.

I had the new HRM pro and hated it. It’d constantly disconnect from my Apple Watch and my Epix Pro. For some reason it also wouldn’t connect to my treadmill. A few months ago I bought an H10 and returned it immediately as I seemed to get a faulty unit. I got another one yesterday. It works perfectly with all of my devices and my treadmill. I’m really happy with it also the band is much more comfortable than the Garmin, with the HRM I messed it up in less than a month of having it.

I have decided to go with the Verity Sense because the chest straps could cause chafing (especially when wearing a running vest). It took a while to find a spot that gave a consistent signal, but now it seems great. It is hard to measure accuracy without measuring it against something else at the same time but I think that it is accurate and consistent enough to show my progress.

Hi Rob, I have owned a H10 for 2 years and have a question. In theory, it is supposed to be moisted before strapping on. However, I noticed no difference in accuracy (well, not scientifically testing it of course) dry vs moisted (I used ECG/US gel and water or own saliva). As for the ECG testing, I use Polar Sensor Logger app (Android) and sometimes the ECG curve was pretty erratic (noisy) in the same movement free position of course but sometimes beautifully drawn. I was wondering what might cause this (moisted vs dry, cold vs warmed up (by body heat)). I couldn't really figure it out. Once I even purchased a new strap thinking that the old one got worn out or something. These days I don't bother to moisten it just put it on. Any thoughts on this? I can send you screenshots to illustrate. For HRV I use Elite HRV which detects signal quality which is 99 percent clear. As for the results, I cannot verify them of course. But it's very detailed , all the HRV components are shown.

Hi, thank you for all your great work and hours you are putting in to bring us such a valuable content. Recently I stumbled upon some content about Fitcent HR monitors, I searched and found several very positive user reviews regarding its accuracy, but also a price. Since it is really a budget HR strap, at least compared to H10 and likes, I think it would be a good idea to test it sometime in near future. There are some of us who would sacrifice a percentage or two of accuracy for a 2 or 3 times lower price of HR strap, if that sacrifice in this case necessary. :)

Thank you for the great work and valuable content you're producing! 😊 Regarding this study, I can't help but have some concerns that I wonder if you might consider addressing? If the study suggests that the H10 outperformed the holter based on the definitions employed into the algorithm; doesn't this tell us that something about the algorithm "favors" the output of the H10? I have my H10 on right now, and I'd love nothing more than to see it performing AS WELL AS the gold-standard holter; but to see results that suggest that it's significantly outperforming the holter is problematic for me. I feel that all but "proves" that the algorithm used favored the H10 in those very specific regards, as opposed to determining overall accuracy. Perhaps an issue with relying on using the R-R interval to detect the three error types as mentioned at 5:03 ? I'm not sure. I don't know if I explained my thoughts properly, but I'll have to read the study myself. May I ask if there were any apparent conflicts, financial or otherwise?

I also need some participants in a research study to clean up after my kids here at my house 😂 What I've found is that most of these heart rate straps on the market (even the very very affordable ones) are extremely accurate when testing for running. The errors tend to be when there's not a good connection to the chest but using a little electro gel is the way to go! Was that part of the testing protocol for this study?

I always loved my Wahoo HRS. I got this after a series of Garmin straps. They were never any good. Now I use a Wahoo optical sensor. Its ok for the most part, but I do wonder about it. It seems to have periods of many seconds of inaccuracy. I will be working moderately hard, and it will stick to 130bpm when I know it should be much higher. I am guessing the Polar OH1+ will not be much different.

OH1 is actually very accurate. Not quite to the standard of the H10 but better thant he vast majority of optical sensors.

That's great news Rob. I need to thank you again for your videos :). I ended buying a Polar H10 instead any watch because looked your tests. In Brazil Polar H10 cost half of the value of best Huawey watch and six times less than a Apple Watch (not including the needed iphone), and works with any ANT+ device. So with economy I purchased a proper GPS for cycling :).

Hello @@Upgrayedddd . I have been using Polar H10 on almost every ride I do with my MTB, and some trekkings too. I have only one complain: I need to replace the battery every 10 to 15 days based on how much I use it. It's far from 400 hours / battery that Polar promissed, but Polar support in Brazil just told that there is nothing wrong. I'll try to reach then again, because I haven't seen this behaviour with other devices.

I have a Polar H10 myself, as they are not expensive and work great, but I am having some trouble finding something to reliably collect data from it and get that data back out and/or visualized, do you use any Android apps for this that you could suggest? I mountain bike and would love to get more data from the HR sensor.

hey Rob! Since we need a reference device for sleep tracking, but the Dreem is not commercially available. Could you test some other EEG devices that are in a similar price range as the Dreem. I am looking at the Muse S (gen 2), but I cannot find any content that compares them as detailed as you do, so it would be great to see it here on the channel. Thank you for all the content!

So my Wahoo Tickr is giving me crazy readings even tho it’s only 8 months old (sometimes 225bpm and 42bpm) and I’ve already put 3 new batteries in it. That’s what led me to this video, because I love your new AppleWatch reviews. That said, I reviewed the literature you have presented and I cannot wholly agree that the Polar H10 is a gold standard because they funded the research and you add a quick disclaimer that any advanced HR strap would probably be just as accurate. Regardless, a better metric for athletes are the reliability of these straps, which brings me here. Most straps lose their accuracy over time and it’s difficult to know which company makes reliable straps. If you can, would you be able to comment on accuracy AND reliability during these reviews? Perhaps tips to ensure they stay reliable? Thank you!

I'd be interested to see if there is any difference between the Polar H9 and H10, particularly during interval training with short duration intervals. And then if one proves to be more accurate, whether that is due to the different straps used on each device, or the devices themselves. The straps can be swapped out between the two, so it should be possible to test.
