That's really interesting. I thought it might have been a reference to the idea of how things in our youth affect us long into adulthood or the idea that even as adults we are still at the mercy of the things that shape us.

The fact, that spiritual leaders often like to be addressed as "father" and reversely call their flock their "children" supports your theory, that religions tend to have an infantilising effect on their followers. For an outsider it is really absurd (and kind of inappropriate), to see an elderly person refer to their young pastor as "father".

Thank you. I have a horrible P->C relationship with my parents, and went to a pseudo school where they taught the Christian propaganda version of biology, empathized evolution as a theory, and had closed-minded, racist, and downright insane teachers. Home is worse, as I'm constantly forced into the Child position I held for all my life and expected to just "be" an Adult when there was no love, compassion, or caring on their end. I turn 18 in three months, and learned everything I know completely alone. Your videos help me see the light. When I make enough money in the future I'll donate to you.

Exactly the same here. "INSTANT OBEDIENCE" was something I'd hear as they smack me if I so much as hesitated at a command. even at 28 they still feel they need to bark at me whenever we are together. I'm kinda nervous, at a very early age I started trying to have an A-A relationship, but that was purged from me. Now that I'm an adult planning on having kids eventually, I know nothing about how to foster that kind of relationship, where do I start?

TT touch on this subject in a couple later videos, and it's something I often use with theists too, especially when they think we're just not seeing gods signs, and that is, a god would know exactly how much evidence each of us would require to believe in him, so if we're missing his "signs", then it's his failure not ours. Or as I like to say, clearly god wanted me to be an atheist who goes around the internet mocking his followers so what gives you the right to question his divine plan lol?

The worst part - I suspect - is you having to lie about believing in their faith, to avoid further punishment?

TheraminTrees I don't know that it is actually pointless. Congratulating ourselves while failing, makes the realization that we failed later, a more poignant experience. I must have failed to leave religion a dozen times, each time a little less sure than the time before that I had finally found something meaningful. Gradually I began to realize that I might be pursuing a pointless goal. I now hold the opinion that 'meaning' appears to be what we make it, rather than something to acquire. I reached that opinion right about the same time that I decided that I had found an *opinion* which (for the moment) seemed to make sense, rather than a transcendental truth. @Kazenic1 'However, you may say "You see what you want to see." ' -Nope, I'd probably say, 'What standards of evidence are you proposing?' Because when you lower the threshold for what's considered 'evidence', you don't only let your divine beliefs in - you let a load of other people's in, that conflict with yours diametrically. They can't all be right. But that's the road we inevitably go down. Then everyone's gods - and their demands - are 'validated'. I worked that out when I was a christian.

@jemborg I don't know if we've been regressing, or just never really grown up. I think there are considerable deterrents in place in many cultures, against the attributes we might associate with the Adult state. I suspect they're often about the retention of individual or group power, but also I'd suggest there's a strong streak of actively wanting to be 'looked after' in various ways - wanting others to sort things out for us. Hence, by carrot or stick or both, we often submit.

I agree. I shared on Facebook to my family and friends, anyway...even though some of my friends are "believers." Also, this doesn't address all religions or belief systems. I was raised Buddhist/Agnostic. When I was a child, my parents took my brothers and me to Christian Churches at suggestion of friends for some Sundays, just so we got perspective of what our friends believed. Pretty open-minded of them, considering they thought the actual construct of the Christian stories puzzling.

This was a great demonstration of socialization. I am glad you enjoyed it. I think it captured the problems of humanity that creep into the many institutes we can be involved with. I think the belief system that is or needs deconstructing is the one that we know what is best for others. I think the demonstration of how parent, child and adult interact was well illustrated, I am a firm believer in Christ. I do not have a problem with such a belief. I am quite happy to have my faith. I do not feel any more or less superior to anyone for it. I am fine with anyone Else's belief's. Criticizing,Blaming,Complaining,Nagging,Threatening,Punishing,Rewarding to control (as in manipulating) I am glad atheist, can see past this example, as was mentioned by the presenter that it was a misrepresentation of Christianity. It shows a lot of open mindedness, and maturity, I can respect his views, and I would agree that any example of feeling superior to others is a vain attempt at trying to control others. Probably the people most offended by this would stand to reason be a believer. Although I think most people can see past what is real, so I do not think it matters.

I guess not. Well, for those interested, my refutation of the cosmological argument stands - any being that performs any action has to be subject to time, otherwise there can be no sequence of events. The objection that this makes a 'category error' by judging a 'necessary being' by the standards of a 'contingent being' is off-base. Nope: what I'm doing is pointing out that the 'necessary being' being presented is unworkable. Saying 'this unworkable thing must've done it' is not a conclusion.

"Doublethink" is really the word for it. There I was, developing an interest in cosmology videos and dinosaur books, and I go, "...but Daddy, which is the actual truth then?" "There are two truths." I just assumed I was still stupid and small and just didn't understand yet - I was being taught to become a dependent person. But you see, all the science books and videos always explained *how* people arrived at conclusions like, for example, how the universe expanding was concluded from redshifts.

Cosmology and Christianity (at least my parents version) don't work well together. That's one of the biggest strains between me and my dad. He knows I love everything to do with futurology and space and he likes it too but I can't really speak openly without letting him know I'm an atheist so it's leaving him feeling like I'm avoiding talking with him. I just want to have a good conversation on how civilization would need to evolve towards the end of the universe or something but he believes the rapture is just around the corner and we won't ever upload our brains and climate change scientists are wrong because God wouldn't let us ruin the world. It's tiring.

Advert at the beginning of an atheist video: "Hello, my name is Aure, which is the Hebrew word for 'light'. If you already knew this, you've..." *skip* me: "...probably seen this stupid ad for _israelbiblicalstudies_ come up before." I know her name, what it means and who she works for - which is three more things than I ever wanted to know. Here in New Zealand, pushing your religion on others is also seen as crass and vulgar - doesn't stop some people but they tend to get shit from all quarters for doing so, especially since those who do so are usually extremist wingnuts with highly fundamentalist or evangelist outlooks, which is equally offensive to quiet private believers as it is to non-believers. *To the privileged, equality feels like oppression* - which about sums up religion in general. For years they've held immense political sway, got to say who was or wasn't a rightful monarch of a nation and what was or wasn't lawful or "moral" and once they started losing that power in the face of growing equal rights for women, homosexuals, transgenders, non-believers etc it's all "help, I'm being oppressed!! Come see the violence inherent in the system!" I met one Christian who had the whole victim-complex going, stating he had been oppressed for his religion (in New Zealand, of all places, where you can be any damned religion you like without systemic oppression) and allegedly had people "spit in his face" _just because he believed in the salvation of Jesus_ - five minutes with this arrogant twat and you quickly saw *why* people would _want_ to spit in his face as he was one of the most aggressive and insulting evangelising and proselytising arseholes you could meet and you quickly began to doubt that the negative reactions he got were *solely* because he believed in a particular religion. Apparently, telling him to fuck off out of your face and stop shoving his religion down your throat was "oppressing his religion". Being *equally* rude and obnoxious to him as he's being to you is "oppression". Reacting adversely to him treating you like a child and demanding you accept Jesus as your saviour was "oppression". He was just a poor victim of a cruel godless world... when they finally do bring out the Victimisation Olympics, he's my bet for gold in all the Religious events.

I had a Christian ad 2 at night, “I don’t know what’s keeping you up at night, but click the link below and we have a team of people ready to talk to you about God”. What the hell? When it comes to me, I am staying awake as I have things to do, not because of things not going well for me which in return makes me lack sleep. But when it comes to those that have emotional trauma’s, such Christian ad’s are manipulative, taking advantage of others whilst they are in vulnerable positions. Highly unethical.

@@TheOrthodoxAlbanian Cheers :) Yeah, unfortunately, there's always some unethical manipulative person willing to prey on people with emotional trauma. If it's not the churches, it's some lying fucking "psychic" claiming they can put the person in touch with the dead or answer questions. Much and all as I hate religious people using people's vulnerable emotional states as a means to recruit, at least they've frequently got the excuse that they're genuinely deluded into _believing_ that shit (certain ultra-rich televangelists being the obvious exception), even though their behaviour is unethical by deliberately targeting vulnerable people. I hate "psychics" even more, because they _deliberately_ use trickery to achieve their "results" (Googling information about the subject, _deliberate_ Barnum Statements etc) so the "genuine belief" defense doesn't apply - you can't _learn_ how to use Barnum Statements or look up information on a person's Facebook page and then claim to "believe" that the information was given to you by dead people. Deliberately unethical *and* deliberately deceptive.

@o. t. There will always be people with more authority within specific fields. The only justified hierarchy is that of knowledge. Some people know more than others and that'll never change.
