Yup my mom needed new tires and brakes on her 2007 fusion. Maybe $600 worth of work as I told her I’d do her brakes. She ended up buying a brand new escape BUT kept the fusion as she didn’t want to put miles on her new car. So she financed a new SUV and still had to pay the $600 to fix the fusion as she’s still driving it. The logic of poor people really is laughable

I got a big raise recently. I allocated 100% of the raise to pension and savings. When I declined to book a ski holiday, my broke friend laughed and said "oh you're on Xk and can't afford it, wha wha". He was joking but it showed the attitude: earn more and spend more. Dave Ramsey rang in my ear "when you're broke friends laugh at you, you're doing something right". I fully agree with this video. Too often people find themselves in a situation and blame the world around them, rather than the sequence of choices that led to the moment.

When I was in the military, I used to tell people to save or invest the difference when you advance and the annual/ semi annual raises. If you are accustomed to making $10, if you get a raise for $11, since you are accustomed to living on $10, why not save the $1 instead.

Good for you! Years ago I knew someone in massive debt living above his means (I had an idea of his high salary but he bragged about all his big purchases). He took his family of four for two weeks in the Florida Keys, rented a convertible, etc. (he bragged about that too). He probably did it so people think he is a great father and husband - but I thought 'idiot'. He ended up defaulting on his home, car, and investment property for flipping and today he is basically eating cat food.

In 2022 I was able to save $4K in addition to our emergency fund. This money was so tempting to spend. Then the transmission on my car broke. The total bill for repairs was $3.5K. At the time it was frustrating but I realized the car was worth the repair and a $3.5K good used car in 2022 would probably be a real challenge to find. I ended up fixing my car. The amazing thing was how it felt painless to pay for the repairs because I had the money saved. It takes a “shift” in thinking to get ahead. 😎

The wealthy not having compassion for the people below them is a big issue that many don't speak on. Like in the past, people were working for low wages, and I mean working hard! And they never were able to be financially stable due to the low pay,but the rich just kept getting richer off their hard work through the years. Spread the love is the cure to all of this! Like if a person finally becomes a millionaire, and now they want to be a billionaire? They never will be satisfied, which makes them not really enjoy the riches they have,? I was really getting worked up thinking I needed a raise until I looked inward and realized I am a lot better off than I realized. The only reason I felt I needed more money is because I have a goal of paying for college out of pocket as I go. I had a “on MY terms” mentality, not realizing how blessed I am that my bills are paid and my only gripe was that I could t enjoy myself while also paying for my education out of pocket. Finally, I realized that I need to look outside of myself. I signed up to become a mentor so I could start focusing on life outside of my wants and perceived needs. I also think of the Bible verse that says the Lord will bless you with abundance. Abundance does not always mean wealth. I am healthy and blessed so I have more than I could ask for. I needed this realization to start having peace!

The worst is when people who make more than you do ask to borrow money. Then you find out they have been borrowing money from other relatives, too. 😂 Then we go to the grocery store together. I buy only what I need to nourish my body based on Nourishing Traditions book. They spend their entire shopping trip on ice cream, brownies, sugary drinks, candy bars.... When I refuse to even buy a container of ice cream for my birthday. No wonder these people have high grocery budgets and high medical bills. As I say, I work from home now, and it works for me, just had a bonus in fact (UK new financial year). I dont take things for granted, keep my head down deliver on my dev work and just get on with it. Anyway with the money I save - I actually invest in myself and learn new skills. I was actually made redundant at one point because of it. A few years later, the old owner of the business tried to rehire me, which I refused. I got a compliment today about finally having a new pair of shoes, from a guy wears nothing but new designer apparel. New shoes, which I bought off color and online (to get a lower price) with a gift card bonus from giving blood is the first new pair in three years. The shoes they replaced, were bought before the pandemic, were demoted to lawn mowing shoes two years ago, and went into the trash because they had holes in them. When asked about it, I told him I'd rather have 15k in the bank with no (non mortgage) debt, then new Nike's every three months.

Excellent points!!! Jade is right, people make choices and need to be accountable for the results/consequences. There needs to be a strong willingness to work to enable a desired lifestyle while living within the financial budget. Take charge, don't play the victim and set yourself up for financial failure. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I know a lady that had to evict a tenant, after working with them for a year. At court it came out that they bought their young child a motorcycle ..and other things. Now they are fixing to be homeless because there are no houses to rent. The tenants really thought they would not be evicted. They smarted off to the landlord. What is wrong with people?!!

I like that saying, "Live a Spartan life and give yourself a fighting chance", Spartans were ultra tough, hardened people that could take a lot of hits, highly efficient, focused and dedicated to their life purpose. Good analogy, I think of the Bob Seger song 'Like a Rock', back when nothin ever got to me, I was as strong as I could be, not a dime to spare, solid everywhere. Like A Rock. 😀

The amount of superficial status financing I've witnessed since the beginning of 2020 is so gross; people have been duped into massive mortgages that they can barely hold on to, car payments that are literally making them poor, and investing in finance trends only to lose the majority of the initial investment. Per the advice of Dave, I talked myself out of selling my starter house so many times when it appraised way over what I paid, and I thought it would get me into something bigger and better. Today, I'm so unbelievably thankful for that sage wisdom as we head toward this financial cliff.

So how does the financial storm that is brewing affect those of us with no debt and have been doing things correctly? I’ve been working my whole life, working to pay off my mortgage, contributing to my 401k, emergency savings spot on and other savings are drawing a nice dollar value in earned interest.
