There is a contract. It’s called detrimental reliance. Nate agreed to pay for the ticket. The parents relied on this agreement and fronted the money. Therefore Nate owes the money.

Everyone who has commented is spot on. 1) you don't welch on a deal (you don't even think about it!). 2) gifts that cost YOU money aren't that great of gifts. And for people who argue with this second point - put yourself in this situation; you're trying to get yourself together, and you are taking on more debt to go on a vacation, and so you're at best mixed about it; and the girlfriends parents are going to be expecting a big thank you for your generosity. That is tough. If you've never gotten a 'gift' that cost you money you wouldn't have spent otherwise, you have no idea how that feels. I have and at best you're mixed.

This conversation is so funny. It’s like he is having to beg a guy to go on a nice vacation for cheaper than he ever could if he had to pay for it all. By the tone of the whole conversation you would think the guy committed to do something that is not fun and didn’t want to follow through with it.

It’s just funny to hear Dave tell the guy to stick with his commitment as if the commitment was a hard thing to do. From my own point of view, you need to invest smartly if you need the good things of life. so far i've made over $255k in raw profits from just 6 months into the market from my diversified portfolio strategy and i believe anyone can do it you have the right strategy, mutual funds takes long time but investing smartly is the key for short term. Most of us tend to pay more attention to the shiniest position in the market to the cost of proper diversification.

Boils down to this. Its not a good idea for parents to "interfere" with bf/gf relationships by giving expensive gifts. In this case, half gifts. It hurts a mans ego if he feels like he cant live up and match their effort. Also, Ive learned throughout my life that men start having one foot out the door when the woman and her family start making all the pursuits. It is more healthy to take family trips when you are married...not dating.
