I used the opportunity of being ill to have a bit of a break from these. But I'm back with more reactions. More XXXTentacion, more NF, more Juice, more Ren coming up....
7 ай бұрын
I hope you're doing better now. Thank you for also checking on French spoken culture. I'd love you to react to "uninvited" by Ren (preferably the lyrics video) because I'm totally opposed to all the reactions on YT. I don't find the song funny, at all. I won't tell here why, not to taint your judgment. Greetings from France.

In 1994 his mother came from Rwanda to Belgium and he was born here, after his father was killed in the Rwanda Genocide.

Stromae is the manikin Dad in the video. If I recall correctly, his father was killed in the Rwandan genocide, and his mother did not have the heart to tell him for many years.

His dad was killed during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. His mom didn't told him for years ad it felt for him like his dad had abandoned him while all that time he was dead.

Stromae does that all the time, combining serious topics with catchy music. Stromae's father was killed in Rwanda but his mother told him his father was away at work. The song and video itself can fit various scenarios for why the father is unavailable, though. It is actually Stromae in the video. He has a lot of great songs, just the translation is tricky at times as he likes to do word plays that only work in French. I think as a therapist l'Enfer and Carmen would be some other interesting songs from him for you.

Thanks for this one! It's pronounced [Stromai] derived from 'maestro' but a lot of people, mainly english speaking, tend to call him [stromay] as well. He's our Belgian genius and everything done by him is done to perfection.

The first time I saw/heard this my heart was broken. I don’t speak French and didn’t have subtitles but the detailed way he conveys the intent needs no words. Stromae, I think, is one of the most intelligent and amazing song writers, singer, musicians of the century so far. He has a very unique ability to illuminate the darkest but most common parts of humanity in a way that you’re not just hearing it, you’re feeling it. The subject matter is relatable even if not personally of cruelty, apathy, arrogance, ignorance set to incredible music that makes you contemplate his words/imagery. I can’t say enough good things about him. If more people heard his music and were able to see from a different perspective or at least become introspective and push biases aside the world would be a better place.

There's an expression in French: "Père manquant, fils manqué" which could be translated something like "Missing dad, messed son"... Pretty much the video's conclusion.

10:19 I feel like what makes this one stand out so much partly because of the video. The layers of meaning and the artistry and the storytelling in the video are extremely powerful in hammering home the meaning of the song. Stromae is incredibly good at making his videos and performances convey the messages in his songs. You should check out both the music video and the live version from Coachella for his song “L’enfer” for a prime example of that. The live version gives me chills every time I see it.

Enjoying your reactions alot! May i request, since you reached Stromae at this point, to check out his song "Stromae - quand c'est" too? This one is far too big to miss and really is a unique song with meaning and topic which isn't dropped often!

In the end you were wondering what made this song reach a billion views; I am guessing it's the whole package: the juxtaposition between the music(upbeat) and topic (heavy), which he always does, the epic choreography with the world's best crumper, the unique video in itself, as they all are, Stromae's voice, and last but not least the fact that Stromae is not a one-trick-pony. He is HUUUGE in the Francophone world. 'Tous les memes' and 'alors on danse' are currently almost at 500milion views. And as said 'l'enfer' (hell) would be right up your therapist alley

Stromae’s lyrics obviously has a lot of layered meanings and metaphors from the French language that are hard to translate, like the part about counting your fingers or sucking your thumbs. However, I think you’re also right on about those metaphors in the sense that it goes from naively waiting, to the anxious realization that the parent might not be returning. I also saw someone suggest you listen to Fils de joie, and I fully agree. It’s a wonderful song, beautiful lyrics and video with a lot of layered meanings.

To add, what gets people watching is stromae himself. He has a gift with words... not all fully translate. But some words have several meaning. And he plays with those. That and the visuals, he is just a true artist. I hope you'll listen to more of his songs. He has a gift. He can talk about extremely hard subjects, in such a meaningful way. And most are also quite catchy melodies

The other kids "dancing with their dads" is a kind reminder to not let yourself be manipulated into a life that your parents want you to live. The song itself is obviously about missing a parent, even if they are "at home" missing being a part of your life or are on their way to the next journey (dead). At least that's how I want to interpret it and that's excatly what me personally love about this song and mv.

Now that stromae is on your react list, i really wonder what you might think of tous les fêmmes ❤❤ there is so much "hidden" meaning in that. I get you may not understand all the words. But even the visuals. Its one of my favourite songs of him. And should you want a good cry, listen to, l"enfer. Gets me everytime

My father was physically present but otherwise absent which was a combination of his mild character and his upbringing. He died when he was 43 and I 23. For myself as I dad, I can say I did better (for one thing I wasn't an alcoholic and I was and am around for them) but was it good enough? One of my kids I found hard to connect with, which didn't keep me from loving that kid (I use strained language for privacy reasons for someone who can't tell the other side).
