Discover what the Bible really says about forgiveness and the peace that comes from living it out with Lysa TerKeurst’s latest book, Forgiving What You Can’t Forget, available now! www.p31bookstore.com/products...
A note from Proverbs 31 Ministries: This video contains content that might not be suitable for young children, and may serve as a trigger due to circumstances in your past. Please see the related resources section at the bottom of this page if you need help finding a counselor.
When we’ve been deeply hurt, whether by someone or by circumstances outside of our control, we often wonder if forgiveness is even possible. What if they never say they’re sorry? What if things will never feel “normal” again?
Lysa TerKeurst has wrestled with these questions, and she’s back with a four-episode installment of the popular series, Therapy & Theology, focusing on forgiveness, confession and codependency. Over the next four weeks, you’ll hear from Lysa, as well as Proverbs 31 Ministries Director of Theological Research Joel Muddamalle, and Jim Cress, Lysa’s personal, licensed professional counselor.
In this series, you will…
Reconsider the misconceptions you've always believed about the forgiveness process by discovering seven truths about what forgiveness is and isn't that may surprise you.
Let go of any bitterness holding you back from offering forgiveness to those who hurt you by understanding the necessity of daily confession.
Find hope in the losses that are unchangeable or feel unforgivable by trusting in the character of God, even when you don’t understand what has been allowed by God.
Recognize what codependency is and how it may be keeping you from setting the appropriate boundaries you need to ensure that you and your relationships are healthy.

Keeping short accounts with God keeps our hearts pure before the Lord. Confession & forgiveness IS HOW we keep short accounts. Face it, so God can erase it then replace it!

Mark Twain said it best. Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet emits on the heal that has crushed it. For me, forgiveness is easy when I need to forgive someone I love because I know that their actions are not the total of who they are. On the other hand, I find it extremely difficult to forgive someone with whom I do not feel physically or mentally safe with because it is difficult to keep my guard up with the one who has hurt me. One day I would like to remember that person no more. And just carry the lessons i've learned to stronger and wiser. We are to be wise and yet joyful.

In my 25 years of existence, I’ve never thought that forgiveness would be this hard to give. I’ve been betrayed and I feel like I died. Everyday I suffer because of the other person’s action. I hope and pray that I can get through this.

The devil enjoys us being conditioned to bear burdens through life. He works with the heavy-laden of the world, using their weary souls to continue damaging themselves and others they encounter. The lightness we know when Jesus truly takes our burden is foreign at first! We must trust Him to help us adjust as His frees us day by day to be the new creature He is making of us.

Sometimes though it’s not that you don’t forgive them and it’s not that you don’t recognise yourself as a sinner - it’s whether you can keep on putting yourself into their hurtful presence - knowing before long it will happen again That’s the hard part I find

I've find that "Heaviness" isn't always unforgiveness? I think one should take the Heaviness to God for clarity of the Heaviness? Sometime I've been heavy for approaching danger, neither for myself or someone else.

This is sooooo good!!!! Forgiveness can be difficult but it is required to be whole in jesus. Not perfected in this area... lord I need your grace! Forgiveness is not saying it's okay or good what the person did. Forgiveness is releasing me from the responsibility to seek revenge/ payback on the other person. It releases the offense to the Lord for him to deal with. I honestly think forgiveness can be the hardest thing required to follow jesus but it can be done.

This helped me understand the other side. I was hurt by someone and as he confesses to me how he hurt me, I am feeling hurt again. But if I accept this as his confession, I can forgive and close that door. See it as a confession, not as manipulation. Your words speak truth and allow God to speak to my heart through you.

Thanks for this insight on the words of Jesus' teaching on prayer...confession and forgiveness as an every day practice to help lift a heavy heart. When Jesus said "My yoke is easy and my burden is light", He seems to be offering to take our burdens from us and let us rest our minds and not try to be the one to fix everything. It seems fitting yet often overlooked that confession and forgiveness are part of His plan for our wholeness and healthy relationships. It is one thing to have that head knowledge but it will take discipline to put that into practice. I will be thinking about the Lord's prayer with new perspective.

My husbands actions broke my heart in so many ways. I want to stay with him but as time has gone on I find myself being more and more hurt. Especially when he goes to work and I'm alone during the day. How did you handle the days upon days of heartbreak. And not knowing if you wanted to start over? The thought of leaving is just as painful as the staying. Idk what to do?
@odeah883

Seek the Lord’s counsel on this with all your heart. If possible, get some Christian counseling, talk to a wise, godly leader or friend and know that God will show you what to do. He had led me to stay and forgive my husband unspeakable hurt many years ago, but when he became very abusive and returned to old destructive patterns, the Lord clearly led me and my children out and has provided for us in miraculous ways since. It’s not been easy, but the Lord has been so faithful in leading me and revealing His will, because I truly, wholeheartedly endeavor to do His will even when it’s hard. Sometimes He will tell you stay, work through those painful issues and He will restore the relationship, and at times He will let you flee especially when your marriage vows have been broken or your spouse becomes very abusive to the point of having you live in fear for your and your children’s safety which is where I unfortunately found myself eventually. It’s not been easy, but staying had become completely unbearable and unsafe and once the Lord made a way for us to finally leave, He really came through for us every step of the way. And my husband has become even more hardened, hostile, unrepentant and more marriage ending sins on his side have been exposed in unbelievable ways that let me know I made the right decision. His actions made a mockery of a godly, God honoring marriage and his horrible behavior became a stumbling block to our kids’ view of and relationship with God and so much more. If you seek the Lord on your situation with all your heart, you WILL find Him and He will make His will for you very clear. God bless!
