I don’t think Tahani is there to mock liberalism itself, more a very specific type of person that does actually exist in this world. The humanitarian who only does it for clout and competition. That’s how she effectively ends up in hell/ the Bad Place. She does undergo a tremendous amount of character development over the following seasons though. She is is way more than just a stereotype. There are reasons why she is the way she is and they are explored in depth. Then she goes on to genuinely care and work for improvement.

Mmmmh yeah she's a very cliché representation of virtue-signalling, which a lot of people are doing... Claiming support for a cause they know nothing about and don't want to hear about, because they're just here to feel good about themselves, and hearing they're wrong is going against their purpose..

@@Tenju96 Also, she's a derisive denounciation of the concept of "the humanistic super wealthy benefactor" whose charity work isn't motivated by the cause but rather by the gain they obtain from it. Selfishness and egotism wrapped in pretend altruism. And I agree that her development make her a particularly interesting/likable character for it.

That is very true, and nuanced, but i always think of her as virtue signaling philanthropist, even though as you get to know her and her sister/family you begin to understand her full character. She is not really a liberalism mocking character, but much more.

Yeah, I'm from Chile and that happens to me too, I understand liberals as people who actually are normally conservative and they don't like taxes and the government involved in any private sector, so they prefer free market and follow the laissez faire doctrine. Also I think what is considered "left" in USA is actually "center" in a lot of developed countries, basic welfare policies.

@Vic Alonso Coming from the West-Europe: YES! Most right-winged free-market anti-government people here (so... actual liberals) still support baseline healthcare, education, etc. We barely consider that part of the political discourse. The only debate is the extent of that support. So in the eyes of an average American, even our most conservative liberals classify woke communist leftists. 😅

It is a product of conservative propaganda. I mean they always conflate liberals with leftists, both pigeon holed as communist terrorist. They always say woke this woke that. But in reality, most institutions in the US are conservative. the TV, Hollywood, and the like. Famous self proclaimed "conservatives" are in actuality far right. I think characters like lindsay bluth and tahani are def different to someone like britta personally bc the former are typical wealthy upper class "humanitarians" trying to boost their image while financially benefiting from oppressive systems while britta's intentions are genuine she's just a typical sheltered white saviour type that tries to do what's right but speaks more than she listens and ends up speaking over marginalised people instead of speaking up for them and that's part of her character development, she's always getting called out by Shirley like there's that scene where britta's incapable of having a girly bathroom talk without being judgy and preachy so Shirley teaches her to listen and empathise

In one episode of a Korean drama Attorney Woo, there was one liberal lawyer who stood up to women's rights. She wasn't depicted at all like how the US depicts liberals: no smugness or condescension but rather genuineness and hope. Even the main character, despite being on the opposing side of the courtroom admired her. The series made it a point to depict her in a way that will make the audience not only like this character, but believe in her cause even if it seemed hopeless. That's what was lacking in American media depictions of liberals who paint them as nutjobs

As an outside observer of American society, I find it so weird to read online debates about social issues within the USA. Whenever someone points out an imbalance in the US, which could easily be solved by refocusing taxes or raising the minimum wage enough to actual be livable, the right wingers always insist that it is exclusively up to the individual to fight their way out of poverty, even though the solutions suggested require the very social change they argue against. Yet those same people in my real life experience, are judgemental and make fun of autistic people because they didn't realize that person has autism. They refuse to associate with "weird" people who have "weird" vibes just because they can't recognize when someone has mental illness. All while they pretend to care about mental illness acceptance and spend their life hating people with mental illness without taking the time to get to know those people. And yes, a lot of "weird" people probably have mental illness and just don't understand what they're doing wrong socially and get rejected for it.

Because theyre an easy target. Liberals, other than conservatives, are able to laugh at themselves, wich is why portraying liberals as annoying isnt much of a risk to movie studios. Conservatives would gladly watch anything that presents liberals as bad in any way, but if conservatives were portrayed the same way, it would immediantly cause a massive shitstorm from the right. The conservative side is simply put much more ruthless at defending their public image and damaging the image of political opponents, and it pays off. "Attacking" a conservative in public is riskier because conservatives wouldnt hesitate to flood a persons social media account with hate, threaten them or even physically attack them if they felt assaulted.

According to the big five personality assessment (sometimes used by large companies to assess future performance in potential applicants), the trait of high openness is often associated with liberalness because of the person's willingness to explore new concepts. Since art is often about pushing societal boundaries, this would explain why people would say art is liberal. High conscientiousness is often associated with conservativism because they have been shown to be more likely to enforce traditional values. This isn't a black and white issue though, since someone can have high scores in conscientiousness and openness, but the higher one tends to influence how others view them. I have my highest score in openness, and a high (but lower) score in conscientiousness, which translates into the annoying liberal who gardens, raises a family, goes to church, but also is against the conservative pro-family movements of censorship in libraries and school curriculum. I also write really long, stereotypically annoying comments on KZbin that no one asks for. I really relate to the Jacob character from Abbott elementary for that reason. Though, I like to donate money to causes like food donation organizations, the Smithsonian (you get a magazine, too), and local literacy non-profits.

I like that you covered this trope! This is similar to the “annoying vegan trope” too. I’ve found that this trope is often perpetuated by a specific type of insecure liberal who feels possibly guilt for not doing as much as they’d like (or they get easily discouraged and unmotivated) but instead of focusing on what they are doing to make a difference in the world, they enjoy poking fun at those who do make efforts for a cause so they can feel better about themselves.

The bad thing is that many people‘s idea of how vegans or progressives are gets shaped by these tropes. This really hurts as people don’t want to consider “annoying“ people‘s arguments, both because the ideas themselves are made to be a laughing stock by association and because people are afraid of being viewed as annoying themselves. Btw. I never met an annoying vegan. I met vegans who had to defend their convictions against omnivores who, as soon as they realized there was a vegan at the table, hat to try to convince them of how wrong and stupid veganism is. When it dawned on them that they might lose the argument, they brought up the “vegans are annoying“ talking point.

I consider myself progressive but I do think there is a difference between true activism for change and the armchair activism via social media that many on the left conflate. The former needs you to work with those that have a belief system different from yours to find common ground and slowly work towards change. But that doesn’t give you the instant gratification of “calling someone out” for saying or doing something that isn’t politically correct and feeling morally superior about it. This feeling actually ends up harming the causes because it isn’t earned through action. Fighting battles on these fringes will not lead to any lasting change and yet I’m shocked by a lot of my liberal peers doing just that and not allowing for the nuance in the conversation that can actually lead to long term solutions for much bigger issues. The tropes here I think are a reflection of that mindset.

The "Liberal whiner" label has always infuriated me. Conservatives are always using that label to downplay any serious issue that's brought up, whether it's a pointless war costing millions of lives or imminent climate disaster, they dismiss it as "whining" as if it's an insignificant complaint. It's a technique I've seen bullies use time and time again - if their victims or anyone else tries calling them out over something shameful or serious they dismiss it as "whining" or "weakness" to make it sound like nothing. And what's worst, people always fall for it.

That's because a lot of liberals unfortunately while well-meaning they only want to solve big social, racial gender, or economic issues on a very surface level. Like they want to put a help with the symptoms of disease but not tackle the disease itself. A good example would be reforming the police and justice court system. A well-meaning but short-sighted liberal will think that if we just have enough "racial minorities" as cops that will solve the issue. When in reality to really solve the issue is to dig deep on how police training is done, help cops get paid more, better funding, and fix ways how they handle eternal affairs within the cops.

Do you think it also in a way makes us liberal viewers feel better about our own activism (or lack thereof)? We think "Phew, I hold those beliefs, so glad I'm not LIKE THAT about it!" Or "I didn't donate to any causes or make any true change but at least I'm not ONE OF THOSE!" We often have someone in our friend/friends-of-friends group that is very vocal about these causes - my sister has been that one in our family, pointing out our wastefulness while she was a composting wiz studying sustainable agriculture in Vermont - and we feel guilty about being called out or made to feel like we're not doing enough, so we feel validated by having these characters we can distance ourselves from and make fun of.

I don’t think it should be a Hollywood celebrity’s responsibility to boycott the laws of another state. The residents of the state itself should be holding their politicians accountable, not Hollywood. I also think it’s unfair for people to demand the entertainment industry not do business in GA for this because thousands of GA citizens depend on this industry to make a living, and A LOT of them are minorities, especially in Atlanta. Plus, GA just had record turnout for the midterm elections as it did in 2020, and that includes record minority voters having their voice heard at the ballot box. I get how the Democratic party wants to make it easier to vote so it’s low effort, but if these laws were really so discriminatory, then the 2020 and 2022 elections would not be proof of the opposite of what is claimed. (Oh, and of course Hollywood only claims to be liberal for clout since that’s what all the rest of them are doing lol a lot of these people vote republican in secret to protect their money from taxation lol)

American education uses the word "liberal" to mean anybody left of the mainstream Republican party. The faces of liberalism in America, Hollywood celebrities and Democrat politicians, mostly behave *exactly* like these characters. Liberals in America constantly lecture about problems tied inextricably to capitalism but also furiously resist any attempts to actually address or change that economic reality. Liberalism, particularly but not exclusively in America, is NOT progressive it is just conservatism with a nicer aesthetic. I agree that we need better, more serious representations of progressives in Hollywood, but confining your definition of progressive to the mainstream American one, you can't make anything other than a sanctimonious hypocrite.

But as the show progressed, and it became more of a parody of everything and everywhere, her character devolved into an annoying liberal, incapable to see beyond her self-righteousness. I do personally think that everyone is capable of greed, cruelty, and pride. And that currently, in social media, we lie to ourselves and others to feel better than we are. But, i also can recognize that the media depiction of political views is a surface level joke, made to appease the corporations that fund said shows. Its always about mentioning the causes, but never engaging in them. Like the environment, yes sure, if the bad guy is trying to kill millions of humans to save the planet, he is obviously deranged and a bad guy. I mean, regardless of what side of the political spectrum you lean towards, there are going to be people who take things too far and it can get annoying when there's two people on the same side rooting for the same cause and one of them adds something like arrogance into the mix and act like they're the only ones taking it seriously and you're not doing enough because of XYZ and then they take things too far to the point of being insulting or worse. We all know people like that. And it makes for great comedy. Let's be honest, if you're a TRUE conservative female, who isn't a feminist, you wouldn't become the Prime Minister of ANYTHING. In fact, you wouldn't even involve yourself in politics because that's men's work. You wouldn't have social media accounts and wouldn't express opinions. You'd do everything your husband tells you to to do, like your religion told you to do. Over half of these women who benefit from feminism don't even realize it. You can't be a right conservative politician and be a woman against feminism.

While I totally agree with the premise and message of this video, I do think it’s worth noting that American neo-liberals are right-wingers too. They’re often called “leftists” or “the radical left,” but, in a global context, American democrats are conservative and right wing. The annoying liberal character is not a good way to represent the average democratic voter, for example. But, it might be an appropriate way to describe democratic politicians. They are condescending, they’re annoying, and they usually fail to deliver for their voter base so they can continue to profit off of maintaining the status quo (while role-playing as progressive). They get elected on “liberal” ideas, but then (through their inaction) prove they want nothing more than to pose as a progressive party in a very right wing country. I think this “annoying liberal” trope might be getting at our angst surrounding this contradiction. These politicians are well represented as condescending or annoying because they do little more than condescendingly lecture the public on morality, all the while proving themselves useless hypocrites by failing to match their actions to their pretty words. I’m not saying every single liberal politician is this way, but it is undeniable that this is a major flaw within the Democratic Party. Don’t believe me? Where is your green new deal? Where is your federal legislation protecting abortion rights? Where is your prison reform? Where is your cannabis legalization? Where is your student loan forgiveness? I could go on and on listening such examples, but you get my point. Democratic politicians “virtue signal,” while democratic voters are stuck voting for them because the only other option is a fascist-adjacent Conservative Party. Frankly, we should lean in on this trope to shame our political leaders in the eyes of the public. And we should stop aiming this trope at average people, as this video argues quite persuasively.

I really hate this trope because the arguments that liberals don't really care and only do it for show doesn't hold up. The same could be said for conservatives. And even if it was true, being morally right and advocating for it is better than passiveness. Making fun of idealism is very short-sighted. Yes, utopia will never be reached but trying will make the world better will at least improve something. I find especially Britta in Community to be neglected by writers. All the others got character development while she just stayed the same, never developed, never got to come to good terms with her activism.

Thank you for creating this video. We need a LOT more nuance in our politics, especially at the "pop culture" level. I wish anti-liberals would admit that Hollywood is not a true reflection of American liberalism, any more than Fox News is a reflection of conservatism. Much of the prejudice against liberalism in our culture really annoys me, and I'm not even that fervently liberal. What bugs me even more than the inconsistent attack on liberals as socialists on the one hand and rich elites on the other is the notion that they're all hypocrites. I always want to scream at conservatives whenever they try to make that point. I want to retort, "If they don't believe in what they say they believe, aren't they conservatives themselves? Shouldn't you like them, then?" It often seems to me that MAGA people are just looking for excuses to complain, just so they can feel morally superior. For a much more nuanced look at American politics in the movies, I recommend the screen adaptation of the play INHERIT THE WIND. It is one of my favorite movies, in part because it discusses both religion and science. Not only are there both positive and negative depictions of fundamentalist Christians in the movie, but positive and negative depictions of liberals. The "good liberal" is Henry Drummond (Spencer Tracy), a secularist defense attorney who is best friends with the deeply religious prosecutor (the aforementioned "good" fundamentalist Christian) he's defending his client against. The "bad liberal" is the journalist Hornbeck (Gene Kelly, playing against type), who smirks at and insults all the film's religious characters. After Hornbeck calls the prosecutor a "Barnum, bunkum, Bible-beating bastard," Drummond shoots back at him: "You smart-aleck! You have no more right to spit on his religion than you have any right to spit on my religion - or my lack of it!"

Funnily enough, I recently started watching more centrist/right-wing content so that I could stop buying into the polarization pushed by the left (I felt I was becoming hateful and dismissing any conservative as a mega MAGA Nazi) and they point out instances that look a lot like moral superiority coming from the left lol polarization really has gotten to the point that both sides love to point fingers at the other side but lack self awareness to call out their own side, or rather stay quiet to avoid the angry mobs of Libs or Conservatives that will attack them for not following the hive mind lol

@@lunakitten._.4871 I really don't care about politics that much. What offends me more than anything else is, as you note, how similar both sides are, even as they see themselves as completely different. The worst part of it all is that I feel I can't trust anyone now. I've been telling people about my belief that "the right is the new left." By this I mean that so-called conservatives today seem to be behaving like so-called liberals were 50 years ago. Specifically, they don't try to be subtle anymore, and act arrogant and self-righteous even while saying the stupidest things imaginable. I could probably stomach all the "cultural Marxist" talk if it weren't coming from the mouths of people who consider the chanting of pseudo-profanities to be the height of comedy. And I want to be clear: I do NOT see the MAGA people as Nazi-like. That's too flattering a label for them. Whatever else can be said about them, the Nazis were at least visionaries. Trumpists, meanwhile, are some of the most small-minded people imaginable.

Maybe this trope could be less about the progressive character actually being annoying and more about WHY the other characters find them annoying. It feels like a reflection of the fact that most people avoid situations where they're reminded of all this shitty and unethical things going on in the world, and their complacency in it. Their annoyance is just a defense mechanism. Both because they're apathetic but also because they're just trying to cope with the real stresses of daily life through escapism and diversion. I think it would be interested to see that unpacked more in media.

Love this video! Marvel always does this and its so annoying and ruins the movie for me. They always have a left-leaning villain who is completely reasonable in wanting to address a real political issue and then suddenly and for no reason the left-leaning character always jumps to wanting to murder the entire world to solve their problem. And then the hero defeats them, maintains the status quo, and doesn't solve the original problem.

To be fair, a good number of liberals I know (including myself), do have that tendency to be smug and condescending. I wanna say we get better with time and that stereotype manifests itself really in your 20s. But I mean, who isn’t a know-it-all when you’re either in or fresh out of college? So I don’t think it’s exactly a liberal stereotype per se. More of a 20 something issue. Because now that I’m much older, I can’t stand endless conversations about politics, what needs to be done, what’s wrong with this country blah blah blah. I can have that convo once a month. Isn't Pierce another 'cuddly conservative'? I totally disagree. It’s been a few years since I’ve watched Community, but goddamn almost everything Britta said is now a popular idea, and validated but was played for mockery 10 years ago. One could argue that “it’s not what she’s saying, it’s how she’s saying it”, but I don’t buy that. It’s overwhelmingly negative to her perspective. 30 Rock is also trash at this. I know that’s a funny, beloved show, but Liz never fucking won, it was always Jack who had the correct way to handle a situation. I have a feeling that show will age horribly.

The problem is that very same industry doesn't do much when it comes to actual change, so making characters with a poltical and moral belief just to mock it ends up doing more harm than good. Many people already view politics (especially the left) as a joke, this isnt helping. You also need to look at WHO gets most of the mockery on screen, the feminist. It's such an easy joke for writers since they've been made fun of in the for media decades now. It's low hanging fruit and they're the ones who suffer most for it

@@r_panda1280 If Pierce had been written as a one-note caricature of a conservative then he would've been a flat, uninteresting character with very little potential for development. I think most people can relate to having an elderly person in their lives with awful ideals (often a grandparent), while I can't speak for anyone else I wanted to understand what made them that way. The answer I often came back genuinely was old age, creeping bitterness and a sense of being forgotten before they got to accomplish everything they wanted to in life. It also didn't preclude them from having wisdom to share and knowledge to pass on. The show never attempts to defend his ideals, nor does it ask us to identify with them. Britta is far more regularly presented as morally sympathetic (also primarily in the first season), subsequent seasons just spun her in another direction and presented her obsession with doing 'the right thing' as symptomatic of her insecurity and a childhood loss of control. That's not an ideological stance, that's just real - I know people like Britta too. Some of the most celebrated works of the last few generations have invited us to humanize mobsters, gangbangers, drug kingpins, corrupt politicians, serial killers, pretty much everything. If conservatives is the line going forward we have an extremely boring future in TV and movies to look forward to.

@@gluck5869 Britta was also much more of a grounded, “normal” person in Season 1 with flashes of sanctimony rather than the semi-crazed caricature she eventually became (albeit at Gillian Jacob’s request). Reactions to Britta - both offscreen and on - have been annoyance and exasperation (“Oh Britta’s in this?” - every comment under every Britta video) yet Pierce has been remembered as the funny racist grandpa, even in spite of Chevy Chase’s troubling real-life antics. It therefore seems that having a “flat” character who mostly just exists as someone to laugh at - except for maybe three occasions where someone in the group decides to be nice to her - is fine so long as it’s pinned as a satire on liberal pretentiousness, meanwhile Pierce’s genuinely disturbing awfulness is comical grist for his character development (how many times has he borderline sexually harassed his female group mates?). Even the ending reflects this - Pierce dies and is given a precious, characteristically “funny-racist” send-off while Britta is stuck working in a bar while her friends go off to brighter futures.
