i'm reminded of when i was like 14 i saw a pokemon game and thought "oh cool, they made games of that show?" and to this day i still don't know why, at that age, after growing up in the wii and ds era, i wasn't aware that, if it actually WAS a tie-in game, it would've been shit. luckily, the game came first and i just had no idea, but like. i'm still baffled by that decision to this day. it was $60, i shouldn't have been willing to spend that much on a tv show tie-in game lol

Dude, the Narnia games went so hard for no reason. I had the PS2 version of the lion the witch and the wardrobe, and I was obsessed with it. All the siblings fought alongside you as AI and you could do team up attacks where like Lucy sits on Edwin's shoulders and punches people in the head. I would constantly beg my older siblings to play with me, but they didn't like it as much... My favorite Spongebob game is also a CD Rom point and click adventure! I had battle for bikini bottom, but Employee of the Month on PC is just really fun and immersive and has so many little secrets and things to explore. I remember renting Revenge of the Flying Dutchman from Blockbuster and being way too young to understand what to do, so I just wandered around confused as Spongebob used a dowsing rod for reasons I could not comprehend.

I remember the Flushed Away game was very good. It was a platformer, yes, but it got you SO immersed into the world that felt like an extension from the one in the movie. Like a world you wanted to know more of so the game let you snoop through all the nooks and crannies of it with different missions to do as an excuse. plus the gameplay was awesome and Roddy and Rita both had different gameplay and combat styles.

Glad I wasn't the only one who always felt like these games were way too hard or unbeatable... Anyway, one licensed movie game I thought was actually good was the Legend of the Guardians: The Owls Of Ga'hoole game. It was on a few different platforms but I had it on Wii (and DS but that version was so different and worse that it felt like an entirely different game). My favorite part was that after beating all the missions on a certain map you earned the option to free roam with those good-feeling flight mechanics, play minigames, beat high scores, and unlock concept art in the gallery by finding it hidden in the free roam mode. You could even choose which species of owl you play as, and the stats vary accordingly. The plot even ties itself into the story of the movie without being a straight adaptation of it- it focuses on a different main character, Shard, and the main villain of the game is a minor antagonist in the movie, so basically they're happening concurrently. And the soundtrack is pretty good, too. Would recommend, honestly!

disney extreme skate adventure is, to this day, still one of my favorite games of all time. the soundtrack is genuinely so good and shaped my music taste as a kid, the customization was actually pretty in-depth for a random 2000s tie-in game, and while the mechanics were a straight ripoff of tony hawk, the level designs were super fun. my brother and i rented it every week until my mom found a used copy for sale at gamestop and i was definitely way too excited about that, lol. i'd love to see another video about some of the tie-in MMOs of the time. fusionfall is another one of my favorites and i'm still so impressed by just how huge the scope of that was.

Listen, most movie video games are hot garbage, but I still adore the Bolt, Ratatouille, and Over the Hedge video games. Those games took their source material and elevated it! In Bolt you play through episode of Bolt's super-dog tv show mentioned in the movie, and the Over the Hedge game is basically a full-on sequel, picking up where the film ends. Ratatouille happens "during" the events of the movie, but exploring the movie's settings from the pov of a rat is very fun and terrifying. The rats also made a little garbage city hubworld that's super cute, and Remy has extremely creative food-themed dream worlds that are fairly difficult platforming challenges. These three games made up the majority of my PS2 play-time in my childhood lol

One of mine and my sister’s absolute favorite games as kids was the Shrek 2 game for the GameCube. We played endless hours of it, and would fight over who got to be the best characters (obviously puss in boots when he was in a level, he could tightrope walk, and that was clearly the coolest thing ever) like to the point that I remember going up to the GameCube and unplugging my sister’s controller so I could switch over 😂 but it definitely fell into the whole “weirdly difficult game” thing, like to the point that even when people like my dad or uncles tried to help us with some of the “hero time” final challenges of the levels, they would have a hard time too. I was actually talking to my sister recently about how crazy it was that the final challenge for like the second level in the game was the weird flying dragon thing where the controls were basically inverted and you had to go against your instincts. Like. Level 2!!!! Out of at least 10 or something!!! But we were dedicated, and even if it took some grown up help, we did eventually make it to the end of the game, which was something we rarely accomplished in most of the games we had. The level of detail and sheer number of characters and settings in that game were just incredible. (Even if the addition of Little Red Riding Hood or a random fairy as playable characters felt confusing. that didn’t stop us from fighting over who got to play the fairy) Really a game where you can tell they bothered putting effort into it and not just slapping shrek’s face on a pre existing model for a platformer.

There's another That's So Raven game that I liked for the DS: Psychic on the Scene. There was a good fashion element where you could completely design your own outfit and the quests were fun. You would get have to act in a disguise or search a room for clues and it was funny and had different mini games too. I still have it. I also played the Suite Life DS game and it wasn't as good and I got very frustrated at the very end at could never beat the final robot bosses :/

I recently found my first nintendo DS from 2007 and decided to buy an R4 card that had like over 1000 games. I was legit shocked at how many were based on existing media (I will say the kim possible games still hold up tho)

I PLAYED A TON OF MOVIE AND TV SHOW BASED DS GAMES WHEN I WAS A KID (some of them were rly bad but many of them were rly fun to me as a child and I still occasionally play those old games from my childhood sometimes for nostalgia cuz I still play ds regularly) like I had this tinkerbell ds game that was kinda like animal crossing cuz u were a fairy and u could do quests for all the tinkerbell characters to prepare for the seasons that I LOVED as an 8 year old! And u could buy and design clothes and collect items like animal crossing! I also used to love this monster high game that u could create ur own ghoul and u went to monster high school and u could go to classes and play minigames and u had a locker and everything!

Family Dog was an animated sitcom that ran from June 23 1993 to July 28 1993 on CBS. It had a game for the Super Nintendo. Purina the pet food company distributed an Atari 2600 game 'Chase the Chuck Wagon' where you sent in proof of purchases to acquire it. 15 years from now, Generation Alpha adults will be talking about all the nostalgic Ryan's World video games they grew up with. This is a somewhat timeless issue and interesting to see your perspective on it. I cannot wait for Ryan's World Soulslike.

The Narnia Gameboy game was my childhood! But I totally agree with these games being super hard. I never completed Narnia as much as I played it. The level where Edmund was stuck in the White Witch's prison was literally impossible to get through

Personally some of the best liscensed games I've ever played were all on the DS. My favorites being the Tinkerbell DS games and Phineas and Ferb Ride Again. The Phineas and Ferb game was actually my first introduction to a proper boss battle, as you fight Doof as Perry after each section with the boys. Though I admit I've never actually finished that one, as it was a bit difficult for a 7 year old, and I didn't really understand boss fights at that age. The Tinkerbell games let you create your own fairies and decorate your own little fairy house too, and that's what made them fun. They don't really have a ton of replayability but they did create a little completionist with all the different clothes and decorations you could craft and obtain.

I hated the finding Nemo game because of its difficulty. I couldn’t read because of my age so the game was impossible without the help of my parents. Input ‘Turok: Evolution’ for the GameCube which was a main staple of my childhood. Don’t need to read when everyone’s yelling the next steps 😭

There actually was a Disney Channel crossover party game on Wii! I did not own it myself (my friend at the time had a copy), so I think I only played it once, but it does exist. I remember Phineas and Ferb was the only animated show to be represented. Until I entered my preteen years I almost exclusively played licensed games regardless of their quality. I don't look back on most of them fondly, but some of them I do, particularly from Barbie, Bratz, and Winnie the Pooh. Nowadays, licensed games are so much different. No longer are they churned out for a quick buck. Developers now put more effort into games based on existing IPs, and players expect more out of them as well.

ugh I remember that Wall E game for DS. I would only get so far before I either got bored or couldn't figure it out. I also had a Build a Bear DS game, Barbie Island Princess DS game, a Disney Princess DS game (which was just a platformer), and many other janky games haha. the best one was the Build a Bear one. but yeah, a lot of these games could have been a lot better lol

Oh man, as a kid about age 9 or so I got really into gaming magazines, I think before KZbin was even a thing, and they taught me that licensed movie games were Bad. I completely ignored that opinion when I got obsessed with Over The Hedge, though. Nowadays, I WISH we still had these things. I'd take them over the same ol' connect-4, city builders and endless runners on phones. Even if most of them are beat-em-ups or platformers... trends gonna trend! Just the aesthetic of these games gives me a massive nostalgic boot to the head even if I didn't play these, so this video is delightful all around!

Oh dude I LOVED the CD-ROM Spongebob Movie game! The part where they get to the... bone desert? Always freaked me the heck out as a kid but I ate it up, I replayed that game so many times LMHO. Come to think of it, I think I still have it stored away somewhere. Also, I know you mentioned the Bratz Rock Angelz GameBoy game being mediocre, but I really enjoyed the GameCube / PS2 version. It had a lot more gameplay, and 3D graphics that were surprisingly not terrible for the time? It was a little weird but kinda cool.

Me when I had a GameCube and DS: Man... every movie I've ever watched has a game!!! So I can play out what I just watched!!! I feel like a badass now!!! (my personal favorites: Shrek 2, BFBB, The Incredibles, and Bratz Forever Diamonds for GC and the many Hannah Montana and High School Musical games for the DS) Me now, who has a Switch: WHY TF ISN'T THERE AN ENCANTO VIDEO GAME?! OR A GAME ACTUALLY ABOUT THE MARIO MOVIE SO I CAN PLAY A GAME BASED ON A MOVIE BASED ON A GAME?! Also just to mention... the Flushed Away game for the GBA was the MOST DIFFICULT game I've ever played as a 7 year old
