@@OurSpaceshipEarth well, yes, but to be exact, the man who coined the word “apartheid” was an Afrikaner clergyman of the Gereformeerde Nederduitse Kerk (Dutch Reformed Church), Jan Christoffel du Plessis. It was originally a theological term. Not a political one. Du Plessis was a missionary who worked closely with black members of the Dutch Reformed Church in the Orange Free State province. He was disillusioned with the way most white clergymen encouraged Africans to give up their culture and adopt European lifestyles and habits. In a 1929 manifesto, du Plessis successfully proposed the church adopt a new policy, which he called “apartheid”.

As a New Yorker, I enjoyed watching. My great grandparents came from Ireland to New York for the same reason immigrants come today. There are some significant differences though: 1) there was no welfare state 2) everyone had to be checked at Ellis Island: their health, background, etc. 3) people had to assimilate. What the US is currently doing by providing free everything including interpreters at schools, by turning a blind eye to criminality, and ignoring its own citizens needs will have massive consequences. NYC is broke. We’re in an unsustainable downward spiral. If the stock market crashes and the housing bubble bursts things will get REALLY ugly and fast.

Not having a welfare state is a huge difference. Also there was the industrial revolution where there were many jobs. During the civil war the Irish would get off the boat and immediately conscripted into the Union army. And having similar values is important as well. For the most part America is probably lucky most migrants come from Latin America, who are mostly Christian or Catholic. Europe is dealing with a lot of Muslims migrating….who don’t have similar western views/values.

My spouse grew up in Passaic, a 2nd generation American from Sicilian immigrant grandparents that entered legally through Ellis Island in 1920. His neighborhood was predominately Italian and Polish immigrants who required their children to only speak English and assimilate to this country. We recently went to his 50th year high school reunion that was not held in Passaic, too dangerous. Passaic is now predominantly non-English speaking Hispanic. Sad.

Why do you need to be sad? America is a dynamic country, it's always changing, including your hometown. I bet those Native Americans he mentioned in the video were also experiencing culture shock when they saw your grandparents back in the 1920s
@dieselbaby4 ай бұрын
@@reaktii America is finished. There's an enormous difference between the kinds of change that is happening now (for the last few decades, really since 1965 but it's been on overdrive for the last 10+ years) as well as the RATE at which it's happening, and the way that things happened in the past. For example, the US enacted an effective pause on immigration from 1924 until 1965, to reduce the amounts of low skilled immigrants showing up and to allow things to settle and for people to assimilate into American society. The number of people coming over the last decade is not only unsustainable financially/resources-wise with housing and everything but it's also unsustainable from an assimilation standpoint, the people who are coming in are wildly different and from cultures which aren't compatible with western values. Keep ignoring this at your own peril.
