Spoiler alert: it’s not hard to tell if it’s not nostalgia. Just ask other people outside your age range. I was 3 years removed from graduating college. It’s the best outside of BO3 and a lot of people don’t like the extra layer of mechanical skill required in BO3, so for a boots on the ground game it is the best. No nostalgia caveat there. People kept playing it for years. It ranked on sales charts in 2017 when it was added to xbox backwards compatibility. That’s beyond nostalgia, that’s just quality. Also, when people say they want a BO2 remaster; they don’t. They want BO3 without the advanced movement, specialist abilities and bright colors. BO3 refined and balanced all the crutch perks and issues that were stains on BO2, like adding unlimited sprint, no aim assist on snipers, sliding over dolphin dives, “guns up” mantling for everyone, no flinch perks and just smoother gameplay in general. And frankly, that would be more exciting and better playing than any of the CODs we’ve gotten since then.

What probably makes the game so spectacular was we were kids when it came out. Getting home from school because it was the start of winter break and you had nothing but time to kill while playing this game with friends online 24/7. We didn’t have to worry about getting a job, paying bills, making ends meets, raising kids, supporting a family, and so much more. I’m pretty sure when we were kids playing this game we weren’t looking for the video game mechanics, the meta, and etc. I guess we just miss a simpler time in our lives where there were no worries and just living in the moment. Stay blessed out there to whoever reads this and hopefully you find you’re modern day Black ops 2.

Black Ops 2 was a time when everyone was satisfied with what they got. KZbinrs were able to make fun content and “gaming KZbin “ vids mostly centered on this game. Pro players enjoyed this game on the competitive side. Zombies KZbinrs were becoming more mainstream. The community was a bit more united in the sense that lobbies didn’t disband so you were able to actually form some sort of bond with the random people you met online. Personally, most of my long time online friends I have today came from meeting them in a random Black Ops 2 game.

Bo2 to me feels like the perfect blend of future tech and modern warfare. It has Plenty of future tech but it's all realistic enough and plausible irl while also including weapons that exist irl or were introduced recently (the Kap 40 was apparently in the prototype state when this game came out and the Peacekeeper was really the only fictional gun)
@skoiloine5809

@@snowfloofcathug Agreed, a fully futuristic aesthetic is just too hit or miss. There might be this or that that's good looking and realistically practical (see: Infinite Warfare, where the weapons and vehicles look like they could actually exist), but a lot that doesn't look good at all (see: Advanced Warfare where everything looks so generic and terrible it hurts). It also just keeps things with a more grounded feel, too many futuristic games go "it's the future so let's add shit everywhere to make it look "futuristic", even if it's completely impractical and/or terrible looking" (see: Cyberpunk 2077 where they stuck an MP5 style collapsing stock on a full auto rifle chambered in a large caliber). I had just graduated college when this game out, so I wouldn't say I was blinded by nostalgia. I remember going into the campaign with some trepidation because I didn't care much for the Black Ops I campaign, but was surprised at how much I enjoyed this one. The choices, multiple endings, and level challenges added replayability, and being able to choose my weapon loadout at the start of each level was icing on the cake. I also reference this game when I talk about good twists with subtle foreshadowing. The twist is Salazar is working with Menendez, and suddenly a couple lines Salazar says in the resort level have different meanings: ~He first scoffs at the opulence and waste of the place when your team arrives. At first you think he's jealous that he'll never be able to afford to visit, but then you realize it's his disgust and everything he's fighting against. ~Later he says he can't take a clean shot to save Chloe because of too many civilians present. However, we had just done a shootout with lots of running, vaulting, and dodging in an area full of civilians, and there were no other civilians near the bad guys and Chloe; Salazar had let them go. I'm also glad I'm not the only one who didn't like the strike missions. I had to play them on easy mode just to get the different endings. Maybe I should go back and play this one again soon...

Maybe not experience something else like it, but you can experience Black Ops 2 again. Plutonium is a 'mod' of Black Ops 2 and other titles on PC which allows you to play on community-hosted servers with some new weapons added in from other titles, along with an active playerbase. It also has links on it's website to let you get access to the game and it's DLC without needing to pay for it if you don't have a copy of BO2 on steam. The only downside is that it doesn't include the campaign to my knowledge, but there are other "alternatives" to playing that. But if you don't wanna go through that, Ironsight is a free to play game on steam which emulates the combat and experience of BO2's multiplayer and does so well, you should check it out too!

I never owned Black Ops 2 myself, but just going to my friends house to play and watch black ops 2 was simply amazing. Playing splitscreen zombies and just having fun in multiplayer. A big thing I think a lot of people don't realize is that BO2 just has this really addicting art style that no other game has touched. Just that soft, grungy, cartoonish, grounded, and vibrant, where where BO1 was darker and harsher, and BO3 onward has just been crisp but too clean. It reminds me of BF3's iconic blue filter, or Battlefront 2015 being more nostalgic by catering to the original Star Wars films despite the sequel improving the gameplay all around. BO2 can't be recreated, but I'm sure some developers could mess around with shaders to replicate it.

I was 12 back when this game released, hell... the fact that people thought the world was gonna end gave it a bittersweet feel to the game, it actually made it feel so much more special in a weird way. Now I'm 22 with a not so great life but damn, this era never gets out of my head, the amount of times this games memories literally lift me from the ground from the gameplay itself, to the story, and the music and remembering all those good times with old friends and more. It sparks this kind of weird motivation in me that makes me want to step up and keep fighting even when everyone around is trying to kill me. To this day it's still the same, it is pretty hard to explain much to be honest, except for the fact that it contributes to who I am now, and I know I'm not alone but damn, I just miss those days of Black Ops 2, just like many others, they are times we won't simply get back.

For the remembering maps I had a theory about this, with the whole new system of SBMM it brought loads of changes, a key one being disbanding lobbies and the lack of map voting. Here is where I think we lost connection to the maps, as before we’d actively see the maps and names in rotation, and when it came up we’d always have to think of the map the layout etc and can we be bothered for that map in the moment and then we’d vote, so over time we’d slowley build a connection or memory of these maps, Whereas nowadays we don’t have that, the reason we know shipment and say shiphouse are because those are the only permanent options

Zombie was a masterpiece, the only bad thing was increasing your rank, the skull to dual wields. Griefing was hilarious. There were no tryhards on multiplayer, and no spam sliding (like on vanguard). And just amazing youtube videos. On most occasions in Lobbies, people would want to do Window Wars, if you are an OG, you know what Window Wars is. There were many BO2’s. Because MW2 created an era were every game was a MW2 copy with some updates. Technically Cod4 started this but MW2 changed the tone to action movies on campaign and multiplayer into fast food gaming with the Killstreak system, and then MW3 was the first to reward playing the objective. Thank you for reading cause now I will mention the main point, if you liked the games from 2006 to 2014 then we are brothers, we played the same games, played the same side game modes and got the nukes in each game! I will always believe (and know) that Infinity Ward was the innovative studio with the original MW trilogy and now Cod 2019 being the first to change the engine and will have to carry cod for 2 years with Cod 2022 since we ain’t getting a new game on 2023. But still, getting more of what works with Treyarch is by no means something to complain about!

Because I was a kid with a treasure of a game that never got boring! 3. It dared to try new things. But it was humble enough to not go too far. The things they tried, they gave 100% effort. They had great ideas and didn’t want to undermine or sacrifice the chance of those ideas reaching their full potential! They wanted to make it fun but grounded! And because of that genuine creative intention, all the flaws could be forgiven or accepted because they got so many things right and engineered a real fun exciting experience. You could tell the people working on that game loved it as much as we did. 4. Everything since has been an obvious cash grab to manipulate our minds to open our wallets. The only other FPS with genuine creative intention to create a pleasurable experience since BO2 was R6 Siege. I made some of my greatest friendships on BO2. We had endless fun. So much in fact that thinking about just how simple and fun those times were brings me to tears. They could have made that the last new CoD they ever released and just kept adding to it and it would have maintained the hundreds of thousands of active daily players. It was just pure fun that was designed to be enjoyed with friends. I hope they bring it back!

Why it's so memorable: Overall: - Had lots of personality and identity Campaign: - Player choice with true meaning behind those choices - Deep lore - Villain with true purpose and motives other than being 'evil' Multiplayer: - Balanced game, but is also fun - Any play style was favored (camping, rushing, quickscoping, knifing, aggressive/sweaty, fun/casual etc.) - Lots of social activity - 3 lane maps - Streaks are incredibly broken so they're really fun if you're using them - Emblem editor - Extra content is simple and cheap, and also isn't in abundance Zombies: - didn't really play it much so I can't say much either :>

You are such a wonderful essayist. That's one of my biggest weaknesses, so I'm a bit envious.

BO2 was the MW3 of the Treyarch games, WITHOUT the production and studio issues Infinity went through. Campaign is one of the best, with a great story, genuinely unique missions, leaderboards, loud outs and a mix of old a new settings. Multiplayer had a lot of variety, options, classic weapons and a really good mix of maps. Progression was also very satisfying with the introduction of class based mastery camos. Zombies is somehow the least consistent yet memorable part of the game. Transit and Die Rise have issues but are MEMORABLE. Mob, Buried and Origins are genuinely great maps.

MW3 is the weakest modern warfare game by far. I don’t see BO2 as comparable to MW3 at all. MW3 is when the series jumped the shark whereas black ops peaked with BO2

The game itself is really great, but what makes it so special is that many of us played it with friends. Many of us can remember those moments where we would grind all weekend with friends. Even on weekdays, we would say "later man, I'll see you on BO2 later right?".

Another very small detail, but something I very much appreciated were the avatars of each team in multiplayer. The best parts of everything is in the details. Each map had 2 distinct teams, with their own personalities, color, design, etc that really got you in the game. And they went even further by changing up the design for each avatar based on what primary gun you were running. Mercs were Merceneries where they sounded belligerent, sarcastic, where they only cared about getting paid ('wanna get paid, move it"). Vs the Seals or the Navy Seals who were more professional, soldiers fighting for the country, they sounded like action heroes. Militia sounded like rebel fighters who are bonded and fight over a cause against western colonizers, etc. I really appreciate that BO2 was able to put time in creating these teams, their personalities and changed them up map to map vs cod today where its only 2 teams and everyone has some custom character that doesnt fit the setting.

What a coincidence you came out with this right when I just started playing bo1 and 2 pretty regularly to help fill the void left by vanguard, Great video!!! Not to even mention finding out were the same age so our age experience with these games was pretty similar so I could relate to a lot you said

I loved BO2 is that you got "choices" for different endings, also you can customized your weapon loadout. Also in the storyline mission, I really liked Alex Masons "Cold War" era missions set in the 1980 where we fight in the Angola with Jonas Savimbi, First Afghanistan war and see Mullah and the beginning of Taliban, the Invasion of Panama against Noriega
